I’ve always loved this old Post Office located on T Street just west of 14th Street. I was super psyched to see it was for lease wondering what would become of it. The blog DC Metrocentric has a nice rendering of what it will look like. They say:

“The project will be adding an addition in the adjacent vacant lot and a second floor. The 6500 square foot project will be retail loft space with high ceilings and huge windows and according to New Legacy Partners there is interest from a bunch of different businesses including a restaurant, tea salon, art gallery and a pizza place.”

Think it’ll look good?

Most people who have heard of Nellie’s probably know it as the new-ish gay sports bar over on U Street. Or at least, that is how it had always been described to me. Being that I am not gay, and I hardly know the difference between a first down and a touchdown, I never really thought to go there. But, the other day while brainstorming for this week’s story, a friend suggested that I check it out. So, I did, and I loved it!

Nellie’s is a relatively new addition to the U Street scene, and sitting at the corner of 9th and U it’s just an eensy bit set off from the hustle and bustle of U Street, which is actually kind of nice. It’s still easy to get to though, only a block from the 10th Street exit of the U Street metro stop. And it’s hard to miss the regal looking white and blue building, with its great big roofdeck adorned with twinkling lights!

They have a pretty cute schtick on the inside too. The place is decorated with all kinds of sporting paraphernalia, pictures of professional and local, recreational athletes, and vintage stadium sinks in the bathroom. And, right in the middle of the ceiling, a big shiny disco ball!

I’m glad I decided to finally stop in for a visit the other night. I’m also glad that I arrived hungry! I think our eyes were a little bigger than our stomachs, but my friend Crystal and I decided to share an order of the mini hotdogs with sweet potato fries and some buffalo wings. Maybe not the most health conscious meal, but paired with a delicious Octoberfest, it was just what I needed after a long day at work. For those interested in lighter fare, Nellie’s offers some more “figure-friendly” options as well. Everything was great, and I thought the prices were pretty reasonable…although, I thought the beer was kind of expensive. That’s the only complaint I have really heard consistently about Nellie’s – that drink prices are a little high.  More after the jump. (more…)

I must have walked by this spot hundreds of times before noticing. It’s above the restaurant/bar Axis on U Street. Any fans of Axis out there?

From an email:

“Just wanted to let you know that this weekend we’re starting a reverse happy hour from 8-10pm on Friday and Saturdays featuring $10 bottles of wine. We figured if people are headed to the 9:30 club for a show, or going out to the bars and clubs on U street, or wanting to lay low for the evening with some friends, or even just stressing about the economy and wanting to get the biggest bang for their buck, they might want to stop in and take advantage of our quality wines for $10/bottle.”

Ed. Note: Mmm, wine…

I had to get this one up for posterity. I suspect it won’t be around for too much longer. Anyone recognize where this is from?

From the Columbia Heights Listserv:

“Neighbors,

I have to get on and rave about a local business which under new management I have grown to love and depend on.

After clogging our tub a couple too many times by trying to give our furry dog a bath, we gave in and decided to take our dog Lionel to a do it yourself dogwash in Adams Morgan. The lady that used to be there was not very nice, but a few months ago she sold it a an awesome couple who gave the space cheery paintjob, sells dog food, and runs some great adoption events.

They dont know about this list serve, and because I think it’s such a great addition to the area, I’m posting hoping to help them off to a successful venture.”

Just curious, so how often does one wash their dog anyway?

Lots of folks have been wondering when this store, in the Hoffman building on 14th between V and W, will open up. Well they got there signs up and the inside from what I can tell looks pretty far along so hopefully they’ll be open pretty soon.

Polly’s Cafe is located at 1342 U Street and was one of the earliest establishments to open on the now super popular block. So I’m long over due in asking this question. I have friends who love this place and who absolutely hate it. I like it as a bar and I had a killer grilled cheese sandwich but I do find the food a bit pricey for what you get. I also ordered a captain and coke that I’m fairly certain was a formaldehyde and coke (although they were kind enough to redo the order for me). I do dig the vibe of the place, very small and chill. I only wish the outdoor area were a bit larger. So what do you think, thumbs up or down?

Thanks to a reader for giving me the heads up about tons of folks running around the U St. area with numbers on their backs. I couldn’t get any teams to stop for very long but I caught the two photographed above at a stop light. They told me it was a High Trek Adventure race. Man, I wish I knew about this earlier, it sounds awesome. From the High Trek Web site:

“You and your team partner will be on a lively, one-day, DC amazing race. This scavenger hunt will take you to unmarked checkpoints known as TREKpoints and explore Washington,DC like you’ve never experienced it before as the puzzle unfolds. Our high octane energy adventure game might take you through the many historical neighborhoods of our nation’s capitol like Foggy Bottom, Adams Morgan, Georgetown, Capitol Hill, Dupont Circle, the Washington Mall and some nifty places you might not even know about!

On this sensational metro adventure, you’ll solve clues ranging from pop culture to math (nothing tougher than 8th grade) to American history, anagrams, sudoku, and so much more. It’s like a real life Trivial Pursuit game!”

Can’t believe I missed this. Did anyone participate?

For those that missed it, fear not. A reader and I are organizing a PoP scavenger hunt for the second Saturday in October. Stay tuned for details.

This is the nearly completed project on 12th and U called the Moderno. I think it looks pretty good. I’m wondering if there will be any retail on the first floor? What do you think thumbs up or down?
