Does “$1400/MO + Electric and share of Annual Taxes” sound reasonable? Is it common to share annual taxes? I don’t think I’ve seen that before.

Can’t Rent Your Retail? Sell the window space as an ad

The Moderno, located on 12th St, NW just south of U St, has found a clever way to raise some revenue while waiting to rent out its retail – plaster the retail windows with ads. I guess if Mastercard is willing to pay then it’s smart move on the Moderno’s part. I wonder if this will be a trend given all the vacant retail spots around the city. Do you guys think it looks ok?

Judging Restaurants – Ulah Bistro

Ulah Bistro is located at 1214 U St, NW. I can’t believe they’ve been open over 2 years now. You can see their menus here (careful music plays). So let’s split this judging into two parts – how’s the brunch and how’s the regular menu? Any must order items?

Desperados to Open in Former Polly’s Space at 1342 U St, NW Wed. Night

All in all this was a pretty quick turn around since we learned Polly’s closed at 1342 U St NW back in Feb. I briefly spoke with one of the owners, Kurt, who said the finishing touches were being completed on the menu. I’ll be sure to update when it becomes available online. The layout looks exactly the same as it did when it was Polly’s.

I think the layout is pretty classic (the bar is to my back in this photo) but hopefully the menu will be a vast improvement from Polly’s dying days. I’m eager to try one of the burgers which is supposed to be a specialty of the new Desperados. If anyone tries one out be sure to let us know what you think.

Dickson Wine Bar is located at 903 U St, NW. There were lots of fans when we judged them a few months ago. They’ve applied for a 26 seat summer garden. Sounds like it’ll be a nice addition.

Judging New Buildings – 11th and (just south of) Florida Ave, NW

Still a little early for a proper judging but I was surprised to see this new building pop up (literally) on 11th St, NW just south of Florida Ave and next to the relatively new Lacey Building.

L & N Thrift Store Closes on 14th St, NW Moving to Georgia Ave
