“Dear PoP,
Just wanted to let you know and please let your readers know there will be a vigil for the DC9 victim tonight at 9th and U st at 9pm 6pm for 27-year-old Ali Ahmed Muhammed”
Another reader sent info from an Ethiopian Web site called abugidainfo:
“Join the Vigil to be held by Ethiopian Americans for Ali Ahmed Mohammed; The Vigil shall take place on Tuesday , October 19, 2010 at 6 pm outside DC 9, located on in the 2000 block of 9th Street NW”

You can see Chidogo’s menu here. It actually sounds pretty awesome. They’ll be located at 1936 14th Street, NW just south of 14th and U.

RIP Seafood & Crab.

There have been lots of twists and turns in the incident at DC9 that resulted in a death (Friday morning 2:35am). It seems all the facts have not been determined. The medical examiner has not yet issued their report. According to MPD, that an assault occurred seems beyond dispute, that a man died is beyond dispute. Five employees of DC9 remain under arrest. All other details remain to be seen. Friday night at 8:45pm MPD released the following report:
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch announced today that five people have been arrested in connection with a death that occurred earlier this morning.
On Friday, October 15, 2010, at approximately 2:35 a.m. members of the Third District were dispatched for an assault in the 2000 block of 9th Street NW. Upon their arrival, they discovered a male victim on the ground. Personnel from DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded and transported the victim to Howard University Hospital where life saving efforts were unsuccessful. The victim was pronounced dead at approximately 3:15 a.m. The decedent’s remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The victim has been identified as 27-year-old Ali Ahmed Mohammed of the 11000 block of Norlee Drive in Silver Spring, Md.
Investigation revealed that the decedent had been involved in a confrontation with employees of DC9 that lead to a struggle that rendered the decedent unconscious and unresponsive.
The suspects were placed under arrest and have been transported to the Homicide Branch.
The defendants are identified as 20-year-old Darryl Carter, Jr. of Northeast, DC; 22-year-old Reginald Phillips of Northwest, DC; 28-year-old Evan Preller of Northwest, DC, 46-year-old William Spieler of Northwest, DC; and 25-year-old Arthur Zaloca of Silver Spring, Md. All five defendants were booked on Murder Two charges.
The Washington Post reports:
“Because the D.C. medical examiner’s office has yet to determine the cause of Mohammed’s death, authorities are likely to reduce the charges against the five men to aggravated assault before they make their initial appearances in D.C. Superior Court on Saturday, according to law enforcement sources.
The sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is continuing, said that even if the charges are reduced, they could be changed again, back to murder, depending on the findings of the medical examiner.”

Thanks to all who sent word about this crazy incident. The Washington Post reports:
“A man was beaten to death by a group of others early Friday after he allegedly hurled a brick through the window of a nightclub in the bustling U Street neighborhood, D.C. police said.
The man, whose name was not released pending notification of his family, reportedly threw the brick through the window of DC9 Nightclub, located at 1940 9th Street NW, just south of U Street, police said.”
I’m curious if there will be calls for the club to be shut down as have been made after serious acts of violence at other clubs near U St and around town?

“Dear PoP,
What is wrong with people these days?!? Seriously! I am so completely disheartened with people as I write this story. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE this city, but after last week I am really disappointed in the people of this city. I met up with two friends at a tattoo shop near the corner of 14th and U streets, NW. It was a Thursday night and the streets are pretty well lit and populated. I chain my bike to a tree right in front of the shop. As we are leaving, I say to my friends jokingly “Hope no one steals my bike!” As I say this a guy walks by and says, “Oh if it isn’t chained up they totally will.” I reply with “My bike is such a POS, who would bother to take the time?” He says “Once as a test I left two really old rusty bikes, one with flat tires out front of this shop just to see. The bikes were gone in under 5 minutes. They will take the bike too if it isn’t locked up.” Well I know this, that’s why my bike is chained to the tree. So I thank the guy and assure him it is locked and we head down a couple blocks to grab some grub.
Less than 2 hours later we return to the tree and my bike is GONE! All that is left is my bike lock…still locked but sliced in two as if it were butter, mocking me on the ground. I picked it up and my two friends and I start laughing at the irony of it all. One of my friends offers to drive me home and as we walk around the corner of U to 14th, what do I see? Some asshole sitting on my bike not even half a block down 14th. Before my friends even knew what was up I am running at the kid who doesn’t see me coming. I shove him off my bike and then a tirade of swear words that would make a sailor blush burst out of my mouth. The guy is so shocked he sort of just stands there still half on my bike. I grab the handle bars and say THIS IS MY BIKE! He has the audacity to tell me it is HIS bike. Then I tell him he is a POS that stole my bike after cutting my lock. His reply of “I didn’t steal no bike.” has me so convinced of his innocence…riiiiight. So then he tries to climb back on the bike at which point I again shove him off and bombard him with more curses.
As I walk off with my bike and my friends back around the corner to U, I notice he has the nerve to start following us. So again I turned around and screamed at him. This time telling him to stop following us or I will call the cops because I have all night to waste, but does he?!? I guess he decides he does not because he crosses 14th and heads the other direction.
Now as excited that I am that this guy is an idiot who stole a bike then stuck around, and as excited as I am that I got my bike back, WTF people?!? Why did no one do a damn thing the entire time? First the bike was stolen in good light, on a busy street where tons of people were walking around. Why did no one do a thing! And then when I was screaming pretty loudly at some asshole who stole my bike, everyone just stood there?!? How come no one bothered to ask if I needed help or anything? How come a small woman who is only 5’2, was not offered any type of assistance? Yes, my friends (a guy and another small woman) would have jumped in had there been a problem, but where was everyone…anyone else?”

If you thought Pica Taco located at 1406 Florida Ave, NW, couldn’t get any better, well you’ll soon be able to get a beer with your burrito.
And just a side note, I thought the description of the restaurant from the alcohol application permit was pretty funny. There is one food item that doesn’t quite fit with the others…or does it?
“New restaurant with Mexican cuisine, burritos, tacos, bagels, enchiladas, etc.”

“More good news. Bob Cohen of Perseus Realty testified just minutes ago at a Council Hearing (in response to my questions) that the Anthony Bowen YMCA project at 14th and W “anticipates being able to start construction before the end of the year.” Thus the long awaited new YMCA, and enhanced retail and residential for the U Street area will be realized.
There will be much more on this in the near future. But this breakthrough is very good news.”

“Dear PoP,
I bake whoopie pies, and recently launched Whoops!, a DC pop-up bakery.
Similarly to a trunk show, or pop-up designer store, I’ll inhabit a location for an afternoon or evening and sell my whoopie pies directly to customers. I’ll be popping up at mid city caffe (1626 14th Street, NW) this Friday from 6-8, and am working to set up pop-ups at other restaurants, boutiques, bars, and galleries around the city in the following weeks.
Part of the pop-up goal is to explore the city and see if there is a neighborhood retail-vibe that seems right for the brand.
When it opens, Whoops! will have a make-your-own whoopie pie bar. Customers can choose their own cakes, pick out which frosting they’d like in the middle, and then choose from an array of “elements” to smoosh in between with the frosting. I see elements being anything from lemon curd, caramel syrup, crushed cookies and fresh fruit, to hot chocolate ganache, malt powder, and maybe even some weird stuff like bacon.
The whole point of the whoopie pie bar is to embrace the humor and fun in desserts. It’s the least serious course out there (although you might not think so from recent Top Chef Just Dessert episodes!) and people enjoy it the most when they take ownership over what they’re creating.”
