Hopefully this is the same guy – MPD caught a suspect on Friday night:

“Last night [Friday] around 9:45 pm a lone subject committed 2 unarmed robberies near 9th and U Streets, Northwest.

Third District Patrol Officers who were assigned to the area quickly jumped in to action and apprehended the suspect near where the offenses occurred.

Due to the quick action of the officers a violent offender was arrested.”

“Dear PoP,

I was standing in the line this past Saturday at the T St Post Office (1915 14th St. NW). The Postal Worker said that everyone who works there is getting laid off and the Office was closing in a few months. I can’t find anything online about it. Have you heard anything? Do you know which Post Office will open on Saturdays that is closest to Dupont Circle?

The line was an hour long at 12:30PM. Obviously there is demand from residents.”

Hmm, I remember hearing that Ledroit Park and Petworth’s post offices were scheduled to close but haven’t seen any movement at either location. Just recently, the Wall Street Journal wrote:

Postal Service Eyes Closing Thousands of Post Offices

Now, with the red ink showing no sign of stopping, the postal service is hoping to ramp up a cost-cutting program that is already eliciting yelps of pain around the country. Beginning in March, the agency will start the process of closing as many as 2,000 post offices, on top of the 491 it said it would close starting at the end of last year. In addition, it is reviewing another 16,000—half of the nation’s existing post offices—that are operating at a deficit, and lobbying Congress to allow it to change the law so it can close the most unprofitable among them. The law currently allows the postal service to close post offices only for maintenance problems, lease expirations or other reasons that don’t include profitability.

Anyone else hear rumors of the 14th and T St, NW location closing?

It does always seem to be busy so I’d be really surprised if it is on the list. But then again given the huge number of locations they plan on closing it seems like anything is possible. Of course I’ll be sure to update when more info becomes available.

From a Council Member Jim Graham email:

Dear Friends, I want to share with you an update from UDR, the developer of the new project at 14th and Belmont. This is an another very important step in the revitalization of 14th Street in Ward 1.

We have now also opened the new Recreation Center at 14th and Clifton. It is now owned by the DC gov and will be operated by the Latin American Youth Center. This culminates a long effort by many of us, including our new Mayor, Vince Gray, to secure this property for better community use.

Bests Councilmember Jim Graham

HERE IS THE UPDATE FROM UDR:

DEVELOPMENT DESCRIPTION

2400 14th Street, NW will be developed with a nine-story high-rise building of concrete and steel construction on 0.92 acres and will consist of 255 residential homes, ground floor retail, two-level underground parking structure, and associated amenities. The community will offer a variety of floor plans with custom home features including premium grade trim, molding, flooring and countertops as well as private patios (select units) with views of the District. Residents will also be well served by the property’s community amenities including a rooftop terrace with pool and outdoor kitchen, business center with computer stations, media room, fitness center, gourmet demonstration kitchen, private serenity courtyard, and controlled access to the building and residential parking. A portion of the residential homes and retail space will be offered at affordable rents.

Continues after the jump. (more…)

2010 9th St, NW has undergone a few openings and closings over the years and is now slated to become Ghion. According to a recent liquor license application the space will become a:

“Cuisines consist of American, Ethiopian and Italian dishes. Music will consist of traditionally soft Ethiopian and Jazz music. No other goods or services will be provided. Seating capacity is 20. Total occupancy load is 20.”

I’ll update again when they open up.

Before I left on vacation I noted some movement at the former Momo’s sports bar located at 1334 U St, NW. Turns out both Momo’s sports bar and the former Cafe Nema space, located below Momo’s, will be getting new tenants.

From recent liquor license applications:

Coming to replace Cafe Nema is arguably the greatest new name for a restaurant, well, ever?

The Codmother will become a:

“New Tavern and Lounge serving fish, chips and seafood cuisine. No entertainment. Seating capacity is 50. Total occupancy load is 50.”

Touchdown will replace Momo’s and become a:

“New sports bar and lounge with DJ playing recorded music. No dancing and no nude performances. Seating capacity is 67. Total occupancy load is 67.”

This home is located at 1614 V St, NW:

“Dear PoP,

I bike past the intersection of U and 11 every day for work and happened to be passing the intersection again today [Sunday]. The southbound bus stop at U and 11 had an entire panel of glass that had been shattered and lay on the ground. I wasn’t in a rush to get anywhere, so I examined the scene and did notice some sort of small hole in a wall nearby (I speculated that perhaps a stray bullet could have caused it). Anyway, I wondered if anyone knew what had happened or had noticed this hole. It’s not good to speculate about this stuff; it could be a coincidence.”

Yikes. Anyone happen to know if there was a reported shooting or if this is just standard vandalism?
