From a press release:

“Less than one month after the debut of his Northern Greek restaurant Kapnos, Mike Isabella is set to open G, a 46-seat, 2,000-square-foot spot that will serve sandwiches by day and a four-course Italian American tasting menu by night, on July 26. G, located next door to Kapnos, is a companion to Graffiato, Isabella’s Italian-inspired spot, located in the bustling Chinatown neighborhood of Washington, D.C.

“With G, I’m recreating the food I loved to eat growing up in Jersey,” said Chef Mike Isabella. “At lunch, you will find classic Italian American deli subs, as well as some more elevated sandwiches and flavors inspired by our menu at Kapnos. At night, we are serving an affordable multi-course Italian menu, and on Sundays we’ll offer a special Sunday Gravy menu. This is important to me because I want to give D.C. that big Italian-American family dining experience I grew up with every week.”

Sandwich Shop
The sandwich shop at G will be open daily, with sandwiches served from 11am to 4pm. The menu includes classics like the Italian hero, chicken parm and meatball sub, as well as Isabella’s creations like the spicy mushroom panino, roasted cauliflower sandwich and roast suckling pig sub. The meats are all roasted in-house, some in the massive rotisserie spits at Kapnos. The sandwiches are available for dine-in or carry out. Carryout orders can be made in advance by calling 202-234-5015. By fall, G will add evening carryout to its sandwich shop program.

Tasting Menu
Beginning August 3, the tasting menu will be offered Wednesday through Sunday. The fixed-price meal will be more traditionally Italian menu than the Italian-inspired small plates offered at Graffiato, including antipasti, a pasta course, a meat, fish or vegetarian course and dessert. A daily crudo will also be offered as a supplement to the four-course menu. The primi course will include traditional Italian pastas like Scarpinocc Alla Amatriciana, a ravioli-like, eggplant stuffed pasta dressed with a sauce of guanciale and grated pecorino. Main courses will feature selections like aged duck breast with beet panzanella and bread crusted bass with smoked sunchokes and charred onion relish. Seasonal pies, zeppole and gelato are some of the ways to end the meal. (more…)

From an email:

We have just partnered up with Clovest, a crowdfunding company to assist us with our very first effort in crowdfunding campaign. Our goal is to raise $15,000 for store improvements and a brand spanking new website.

“Renew, Refresh, and Re-do”.

• Install new carpets on the stairs and on the mezzanine level
• Paint the entire store
• Finish and seal the concrete floors
• Install new fixtures and improve displays for products throughout the store
• Improve our storage systems
• Replace our front windows and renovate the front and rear entrances
• Improve our environment systems
• Update our web presence

For more information head over to our donation page.

Update from Clovest:

My name is Karan and I’m the Founder/CEO of Clovest, the platform on which PULP is raising the funds for their loan to improve their store and website. I just wanted to clarify how the campaign/process works and stress the following things:

1. This is a zero-interest LOAN, not a donation. All the funds you contribute are obligated to be repaid by the business (PULP) over the next three years in quarterly payments.

2. The existence of the funding campaign is NOT some sort of last resort financing for PULP. The truth is even for successful, healthy businesses, accessing financing in amounts UNDER $100K is near impossible from a bank, even those that have existing credit lines and relationships with banks — it is simply an amount too small to merit the underwriting required. That is exactly WHY we created our platform, to help businesses avoid having to use high interest credit cards for small scale financing.

3. PULP requesting your help in funding their loan stems from their desire to involve the community in the improvement of their business. We often all shop locally (as many of you have pointed out the merits of), our platform simply takes that a step further and has the community participate in the growth of a business by lending it money.

There is more detail on the project page and our website about how it works– PULP will be posting updates on the particulars of the renovation and website improvement in the coming weeks, so I’d urge you to follow the campaign if you’d like to learn more.

I’m also happy to answer any further questions that anyone may have (email me at karan AT clovest DOT com). We’re a new DC based company and its always good to hear from our local community about how we can continue to make our service better for everyone involved.

Thanks,

Karan

The Nine Lives of Marion Barry (2009)

Many people remember Marion Barry as the philandering drug-addled mayor of the nation’s capital. He’s the poster boy for corruption, a pariah. Yet to others, Marion Barry is a folk hero who has dominated Washington D.C. city politics for over 40 years. Today, Barry is once again in the political limelight. Who is Marion Barry, really? A hero? A scoundrel? For the first time, Marion Barry: Not Down for the Count reveals the complete unforgettable story. Written by Toby Oppenheimer

“This is my building! I was walking out on my way to work at 9:45 am (yes, late) and saw a little smoke out from the top floor window. I walked next door to the fire department and told them and they sprang into action. Within minutes there was a plume of smoke coming out. They did extinguish it but I’m not allowed back in the building yet.”
