From a press release:
“Owners Diane Gross and Khalid Pitts announce November 9 as the opening day for the new Cork Wine Bar & Market at 1805 14th St NW. The new concept will join the classic Cork Wine Bar and Cork Market under one roof. The move sees the iconic Logan Circle wine bar transition from its original location a block south on 14th Street into a second-floor space that allows it to expand its operation with outdoor dining and increased private dining options, event spaces and educational programming. Downstairs, the market will see growth with the addition of a tasting bar and café with casual bistro seating and a house rosé made on-site. (more…)

mosquito anti-loitering device from Chinatown back in 2010
“Dear PoPville,
Twice when I’ve walked by a particular house, there is a repeating, high-pitched beep that kills my head. This sound is on the east side of New Hampshire Ave NW, just south of 16&U. I can’t find any mention of it on the inter webs but it’s terrible and certainly does not help post-work headaches on the commute home. My best guess is it’s a mosquito device–an anti-loitering device that emits a sound only young people can hear, except I’m probably too old to hear that noise. Any ideas?”

“Hoops Sagrado is a Washington, D.C.-based youth leadership and development nonprofit organization that gives at-risk youth from the D.C.-area a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend a month during the summer in the highlands of Guatemala learning another language and culture, teaching their Mayan indigenous peers basketball skills, developing their sense of self, and gaining a new perspective on life.
Using the game of basketball as the common thread, the D.C. youth volunteers and their Guatemalan counterparts are able to not only share their love of the game, but the D.C youth learn how to communicate with, understand, and appreciate another way of life, which while different, shares many of the same challenges they face at home — racism, poverty, broken homes, lack of opportunities and social marginalization.”

“Dear PoPville,
Dukem, the Ethiopian restaurant, has been building lately but I am not sure what.
A month ago they had a pallet of 2x4s delivered to the roof. They were more for framing than a roof. Then there were plywood walls put up behind Apple Lounge, a hooka bar they own on the second floor next door. That all stopped when a orange DC Stop Order sign was put on the door.
A week or two later, the Stop Order was taken down and I spotted more workers on the roof over the weekend. They seems to be putting building wrap on the plywood to create a rooftop room adjacent to Apple Lounge. Then another Stop Order was put up on the front door. Now the Stop Order is still there but a building permit for a new roof was added above it. Work seems to have stopped.

What were they trying to put up? A new roof? a roofdeck? Does anyone know what they intend to do?”

11th and Florida Ave, NW. Mike sent us the above at 8:02pm. I’ve never seen police tape close a road for fireworks.
“Dear PoPville,
I heard a LOT of gunshots (20-30) in rapid succession (or loud fireworks?) today at around 7:20pm from our home on Euclid and 12th. Seemed to come from south or southeast from us, and may have been a few blocks away (we’re on a hill so sound travels pretty far). Called it in but did not see anything posted on the MPD feed. Was wondering if others heard the same and know what was going on?

17th and U Street, NW
I keep getting emails from folks letting me know that the Hana Market has reopened (they opened last Wednesday.) I stopped in over the weekend and the place was packed. But what I really want to share is the feeling that filled every corner of the store. Relief and joy. The smiles on those shopping were everywhere. Folks were looking at each other with no words passed but their eyes were shouting “can you freaking believe it?!?!” The thanks given to the cashier/owner were flowing and sincere from all patrons. It felt like a celebration but one born out of pure relief. If you don’t like hard to find Japanese groceries, it’s hard to explain. If you do, enjoy this feeling, we don’t often get this lucky. And let me add to the chorus, Long Live Hana!!
