There’s been a lot of anticipation about the opening of Beau Thai at the corner of NJ and R St, NW. We took a sneak peek at the menu here. So here’s the early word from a few readers:

“I stopped in for some dinner after work, and can at least say that the Pad Se Ew is delicious. They were only taking cash yesterday, but said they expected to be taking credit cards either today or tomorrow.”

and

“It was good. Nothing special, but very good. You really can’t get Thai food wrong though, I’ve never had inedible Thai food. The owner is the sister of Thai X-ing, they both learned to cook from their mother and are all originally from Thailand.”

Any other early reviews yet? Remember so far it is only take out but hopefully in Sept. sit down will be an option as well.

Last time we spoke about this building a reader who lives nearby said it was not fair to judge without showing the block as a whole. I went back to check on the progress and this time I took lots of different angles. Given the new shots – now what do you think at this still early stage – think it’ll fit on the block?

It may be too early to tell but hopefully these new photos put it in proper perspective.

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

What’s going on with all the construction in the small triangular corner lot between the Howard Theater and Florida Ave NW? Is there going to be a building there or are they just going to landscape it? Maybe it has something to do with the work getting started up again on the Howard Theater? It is August, after all, and wasn’t it supposed to start sometime this month?”

From the photo I took it seems that DDOE is simply removing/repairing a leaky underground storage tank. Which I suppose is very good news. I would be surprised if a building went above it but I’ll be sure to keep an eye on the space. Anyone else hear specific plans about this little lot? I did hear that work at the Howard Theater was supposed to resume soon but let’s just say that I’ve become very skeptical about those timeframes. I feel like we’ve been burned so many times with false starts. Though I’ll certainly post when construction resumes. In the meantime I suppose fixing a nearby leaky underground storage tank is a good first step…

Since this photo was taken, a polished concrete countertop now adorns the half wall you see.

Earlier in the week I mentioned that Beau Thai a new restaurant will be opening up at the corner of R and New Jersey Ave, NW. At first we thought takeout would open Monday, then Thursday, now I’m hearing on twitter and elsewhere that it is now looking like a Friday opening. But I was able to get my hands on a menu which you can see in a pdf below:

If you can’t open the PDF and have a magnifying glass:

And here’s a bit more info from a Shaw resident working with the new restaurant:

“Beau Thai will initially operate as a fast food establishment due to zoning restrictions. Earlier this year, we submitted an application for a special exception to change the existing nonconforming use (fast food) into another nonconforming use (restaurant). Last month, ANC2C voted unanimously in favor of supporting our application, as did the Convention Center Community Association. We have a hearing before the Board of Zoning Adjustment on September 21, 2010 about our application. If all continues to go well, Beau Thai will be able to operate as a sit down restaurant soon thereafter.

I have sampled many of the items on the menu; the food is FANTASTIC! It’s so fresh, tasty, and authentic. Additionally, the space is really beautiful, with exposed brick walls, crystal pendant lights, dark hardwood floors, etc. As a Shaw resident myself, I can say Beau Thai will be a true asset for the neighborhood and I’m very excited about its opening!”

Back in March we heard about a new restaurant, Beau Thai, coming to the corner of R & New Jersey Ave, NW. I’ve had some timely emails on the topic. A reader wrote last week:

“Hey! So my boyfriend and I bike down R street every day to work, and we’ve been monitoring the progress of Beau Thai (at R & New Jersey) pretty closely. Today there were two guys out front and my boyfriend asked them when the restaurant would be opening…they said probably next week! So Bloomingdale might be getting TWO restaurants in August if Rustic keeps on track!”

and from a Bloomingdale resident (email):

“Please note in the upcoming news that Beau Thai will open on this Monday, August 9, for take-out; dine-in coming soon! The restaurant is located at R & New Jersey Ave NW.”

I stopped by on Sunday, and though the doors were locked, I peeked through the window and the inside was looking great. If anyone tries some take out, let us know what you think. I’ll be sure to update when the dine-in option is available.

UPDATE: I’m now told Beau Thai is aiming to open on Thurs. I’ll repost when date is set in stone.
