“At our first brunch service we listened to the regulars and patrons in general and re-worked our menu. We lowered our price points and allowed for more flexibility when ordering.

Instead of offering big prix fixe options Dacha now offers a la card brunch with $10 to $17 dishes with tax included. Bottomless Mimosas will remain at $15 with tax also included.

Dacha Brunch is on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am till 2pm.”

“Dear PoPville,

We live in a new “luxury” apartment building in Shaw and have had continuous mice and roach problems in our apartment since we moved in last summer. The mouse problem seems to finally be under control (fingers crossed) but it took months of emails and calls to get management to do anything about the situation. The roach problem is ongoing.

My question is – has anyone else experienced similar pest problems in a new building or elsewhere? What does it take to get management to take the problem seriously? Should we look into contacting a DC tenants’ rights association? Go crazy on social media? We like everything about where we live except for the disgusting pest problem, and would love to have this finally resolved.”

A reader alleges yesterday afternoon:

“caught the guy stealing packages over on 8th Street NW between S and T – had to wrestle my neighbor’s package away from his bag full of other people’s mail!”

A reader reports:

“Just wanted to pass along a heads up that for the last two mornings, cops have been ticketing bikers heading westbound on M Street NW between 9th and 10th (the block next to the Convention Center). A portion of the block – between the corner of 9th and M and Blagden Alley – is one-way heading eastbound only, so they are ticking westbound bikers right by the Alley, coming down the street against traffic. They seem to only be ticketing bikers on the street, not on the sidewalk.”

From a Shaw listserv:

“My name is Josh Saltzman and I’m one of the owners of Ivy and Coney. We are excited to present to the neighborhood our planned roof deck expansion. This will entail us adding a full kitchen (because we know everyone is tired of eating just hot dogs), an outside bar and more seating. Additionally, the roof deck will have 12 foot walls and a retractable roof that will allow the deck to be enjoyed in all seasons and provide a large measure of noise reduction. We would love to here from all of you, our neighbors (and hopefully our customers), regarding what you think of our plans. We welcome all critiques, good and bad. We will be hosting a meeting at the Kennedy Rec Center this coming Tuesday, May 26th at 7 PM to answer any questions or concerns. Please feel free to pass our information along to any fellow residents that are less technologically inclined. A small slide set with more details: Expansion-Overview (PDF)

“Dear PoPville,

I’d like to take a moment to share a warning with you that I thought perhaps you could pass on to the Shaw pet owner community. I regularly walk my dog down 7th street, and usually, it is without incident. However, Friday night my dog unfortunately came upon a chicken bone that had been discarded on the sidewalk (between P and O) and managed to swallow it before I had the chance to pry it from him. Although dogs are often depicted happily gnawing on bones, cooked bones can easily splinter and cause internal bleeding or gastrointestinal distress if it causes a blockage. These chicken wing ones in particular are distressing because they can generally be swallowed but may be too large to pass. If you’re lucky, your dog will be able to digest it and escape the experience without harm. At the other end, your dog could potentially die from internal injuries or even choke on the bone as he tries to swallow it.

In my case, it was dark outside, so I didn’t notice the bone before my dog picked it up, and on top of that I wasn’t aware that I should be on the lookout for this life-threatening item on the sidewalk – especially since there was a trashcan 4 steps away. I have seen the bones before, but the last time was several months ago, so it wasn’t fresh on my mind. And my dog almost paid the ultimate price for that. Which is why I am reaching out to you – I thought my fellow Shaw residents should be aware so that they can be on the lookout themselves and avoid the panic and potential harm to their fur baby. My dog has been throwing up all morning and extremely lethargic as a result of this incident. I’ve been on the phone with the emergency vet several times and was just about to take him in when he at last threw up the piece of bone he had eaten the night before. Someone else might not be so lucky.

Just wanted to share.”

A reader tweets us:

“Shots fired on 7th and O. Careful out there!”

I asked if MPD was on the scene:

“yes along with ambulances…. same spot as usual.”

On the Shaw listserv a resident writes:

“We were just out walking the dogs, and a block away (near 7th & O) a loud shot rang out followed by screams and chaos, and then sirens. There had been a party going on there. There may have been some additional shots. This happens repeatedly in that same area, yet there were on police in the area when it happened.”
