It is amazing how much better these bodegas look without the bullet proof glass. Pictured here is Bisrat Mekuria, owner of the Family Foods Market, located on New Hampshire Ave., right across the street from the Petworth metro. I give him mad props for having the courage to take down the bullet proof glass. I’m totally stoked. It feels so much more human. I wish him much safety and success.

I did a double take when I saw this sign at the Rock Creek Church Cemetery. Apparently it is a commercial lease. The building is wicked cool and all but, um, it’s in a cemetery. That would be an odd spot for your new office space, yeah?

I don’t mean for this to be a controversial post but I’m seriously curious. When a neighborhood has fancy condos and retail emerging what happens to the old school apartment buildings? We’ve seen property values sky rocket for various reasons and they have still remained rather high. So in this environment do these “non luxury” apartment building raise their rent? Do you begin to see new folks with higher incomes moving in? Is there resentment? Has anyone thought about this?

Love the lemon. You have to love the lemon. And I proudly do. El Limeno is located on the 200 block of Upshur right across from the Hitching Post and near the Old Soldier’s Home main gate. Now, I’ve written about El Limeno in the past. Particularly noting it’s delicious three taco meal of beef, shrimp and chicken for $10. You can not beat that. Additionally, the owners are super nice and the entire staff is among the most attentive I have ever encountered. So why is it always empty? It breaks my heart to see such good people and good food and good music and good decorations…go unappreciated. This is a gift that is being taken for granted. It doesn’t look like much from the outside and I guess it’s a bit of a walk from the metro but if you live anywhere in a two mile radius you must visit! You will not be disappointed. You’ve got to try it and you too will love the lemon.

A reader writes:

“I don’t know if this has ever been a question of the day, but do our Safeway’s (both Georgia Avenue ones) have a nickname? Here’s what I know of other Safeway’s in town:

Secret Safeway – off Wisconsin Avenue
Soviet Safeway – on 17th Street in Dupont
Sandanista Safeway – Columbia Road
Sycophant Safeway – Watergate
Social Safeway – Georgetown

I have been referring to the Safeway near the metro as the Six Feet Under Safeway because of the proximity to all of the funeral homes. Is this not politically correct?”

I saw this on the Petworth Listserv:
