It’s so wild to see this project coming to completion. But as many have speculated it is true – they are becoming rentals and no longer condos. The list keeps growing. But on the other hand people have often been writing me about where to find good rentals in town so hopefully these projects will help fill that need.

I’m really looking forward to see what it looks like when all the red brick is filled in as well.

Pedro Chavez is looking for the community’s support in his opening of Kikos, a restaurant that would reside on Quincy and Spring Road, East of 14th Street.  The place would be a rotisserie chicken restaurant that would seat about 50 and would also have delivery and pickup.  He said the food would also be on the healthy side and the establishment would be a family oriented one.  He hopes to open in December.  He needs your support.  More on Church parking, CVS, “Stinky” Safeway and 16th Street Heights Parks after the jump. I have to encourage you to check out a game one Saturday afternoon at Roosevelt High on Upshur Street just west of Georgia Ave. It’s not quite Redskins caliber, well, actually, I guess it is Redskins caliber…

The flier for this home located at 4305 4th Street, NW says:

“Opportunity in this Solid Brick Townhouse with 3 Bedrooms, 1.5 Baths in up and coming Petworth. Convenient to Petworth Metro, and Georgia Avenue Busline. This home is in Good Condition and is priced to sell.”

More details found here.

Wow, I think I may have found a good deal. This home is priced at $319,000. Does this make it a good deal?

Domku located at 821 Upshur Street has a new fall menu. Find more details here. I can’t decide if I’m more excited about the pickled herring on blinis or the latkes. It’s like I’m back in the old country…

From a reader:

“DCCX, the only cyclocross race held in the nation’s capital, will be held on October 26 on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in NW Washington DC. Registration is now open on BikeReg.com.

For the second-annual event, race promoters DCMTB/City Bikes are building on last year’s exciting, successful race and will offer improvements to an already awesome race experience — and provide even more extra-curricular fun for racers, kids and spectators. DCCX joined the MABRA cross series this year.

Three ways the fun continues from last year:

1. The race is held on a classic, European-style cyclocross course. It’s fast with lots of transitions from grass to pavement to gravel and back. There are some tricky barriers and roots. Amateur archeologists from DCMTB uncovered a stone, Paris-Roubaix-style path before last year’s race, and that has become DCCX’s signature feature. The layout is great for first time cyclocross racers and a fast, challenging event for veterans.

2. The Armed Forces Retirement Home is the site of four National Historic Landmarks, including the Lincoln Cottage. Lincoln withdrew to the
Soldiers’ Home each summer to escape the heat in the White House. It’s difficult to get on the grounds the other 364 days of the year; with a registration you can drive right in and check out the grounds, and schedule a tour of the Lincoln Cottage.

3. Beer. Yes, indeed: Racers will once again be able to enjoy a beer after their race courtesy of Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar in Washington, DC. More details after the jump. (more…)

I think this house expansion was done perfectly. You can hardly tell from the front. It seems like it has added a ton of extra room without looking ridiculous. I know folks don’t like vinyl but what do you think of this expansion?

Dear PoP, Hope you are well. I really love your blog! Its so nice to see the old neighborhood alive and well! My grandparents bought the row house @ 3912 8th Street in August 1929, just before the stock market crashed in October. They later bought 3914 8th Street as well and my folks lived there. The old building a few doors down used to be a Synagogue up unto the 60’s and then became, I believe a Baptist Church. My grandmother moved up to MoCo in the 70’s and sold the row houses some time later. Would love to see a photo of the old place if you happen by. How is 8th Street holding up???

You’ll be happy to know 8th Street looks great! Thanks for providing some history. Photo of block and old Synagogue after the jump. (more…)

“Friends of Rock Creek Cemetery are invited to help Casey Trees and St. Paul Parishioners plant trees from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4. Who’s a friend? Anybody who enjoys the cool of the Rock Creek Cemetery in the summer, the quiet on any afternoon, the green surroundings and a place to stroll with dogs, children and friends. We will be planting in the historic Oak Grove behind the Parish House.”
