It’s been a long time coming but the day has finally arrived. Welcome Petworth’s newest sitdown restaurant – Sala Thai located at 3716 Georgia Avenue, NW (above the Petworth Metro in the Park Place building). They are having a soft opening starting Friday evening (tonight)!

Still some finishing touches going on but here’s a quick sneak peek at the dining area:

And the Columbia Heights Marketplace will start June 5th from 9am – 2pm at the Civic Plaza at 14th Street and Park Road, NW.

Here’s a great example of a terraced garden up in Petworth.

But what was even cooler was talking to the owner. It turns out that his elderly neighbors are also big fans of the garden. But unlike normal people he decided to start a garden for them in front of their house. Mark one for going above and beyond:

Last week, you may have noticed an UrbanTurf post about The Neighborhoods of 2015, which considered the up and coming ‘hoods expected to be hot in a few years. The Prince of Petworth, PoP contributor Kevin Wood, and myself were included among those asked to comment. Notably, Petworth was absent from the list; an omission somewhat explained by this Good Deal or Not Revisited (GDoN-R).

Ed. Note: I did not pick Petworth for the UrbanTurf article because the criteria I was given also made it clear that Petworth was already a hot neighborhood! (I was shocked to see Mt. Pleasant listed…)

Quite simply, once a house can be a Good Deal or Not (GDoN) post and be priced over half a million dollars (after having sold less than five months prior for sub-$200,000), and be declared a good deal by commenters, then perhaps that neighborhood is already past “up and coming”. Not to mention that it was on the market for a whopping total of five days and sold over twenty thousand dollars above list…for a house on a three syllable street!

A couple weeks ago, I mentioned that the first house on Capitol Hill to sell over a million dollars sold in 2001. A comparable milestone for Petworth was the first house to sell over half a million dollars, which came to fruition in 2004. The market peak of 2005 saw a total of 28 sales of fee simple properties in Petworth over $500,000., followed by the same total in 2007. The number of $500,000.+ sales in Petworth slowed down to 16 in 2007, followed by a disappointing total of 3 in 2008. In all of 2009, only 6 Petworth properties sold over the $500k mark. Almost at the halfway point for the year, there have already been 5 settled sales over half a million dollars. Petworth isn’t necessarily in line to compete with top of the Boom price activity yet, however, things are definitely moving along.

Of course, price is not the only measure of the health of a sub-market. Back in 2002, Petworth saw 192 fee simple properties change ownership hands. By 2003, that number progressed to 230, to a peak in 2004 at 268 transactions. Number of transactions progressively slid back to lows of 134 and 139 in 2007 and 2008, respectively. Foreclosure sales followed by re-sales of the same (but renovated) properties bumped the numbers to 201 transactions in 2009. So far, for the first half of 2010, there have been 109 settled fee simple sales, which is setting a nice, steady pace.

From Wayan:

“Seems an oil slick down southbound New Hampshire Ave NW made a slip-slide for cars approaching Grant Circle. Three accidents later, DCPD has closed off the Circle to clean off the oil.

Expect a traffic jam on surrounding side streets as drivers look for alternate routes this evening.”

From MPD:

“All traffic approaching Grant Circle NW, will be shut until further notice; this will include northbound and southbound traffic towards the Circle; from Illinois Ave, 5th Street and Varnum Street, NW. This is an oil spill from a tanker truck. DCFD and DDOT are attempting to clean-up. We will advise the community when traffic re-opens”

Update 9:05pm: Grant Circle reopened to traffic.

Petworth’s Safeway on Georgia Ave (3830 Georgia Ave, NW)

Georgetown’s new Safeway on Wisconsin Ave (1855 Wisconsin Ave, NW)

While I’m very happy with the YES! Organic Market a bit further up the block at Georgia and Taylor, I find it pretty appalling to compare the Petworth Safeway to the Georgetown Safeway. I understand that Georgetown residents have a lot of money to spend so obviously they are going to get a nice store but Petworth residents were told time and time again that this relic on Georgia Ave was going to be upgraded. Whenever I ask Mayor Fenty or Council Member Bowser they say, plans are still in the works. But Lord – how long must we wait. Quite frankly I just don’t like all the bullshit. If they’re not going to upgrade the Georgia Ave Safeway then just say so. Be honest with us, we can take it. I’ve heard lots of rumors as to why the Safeway upgrade has stalled. Some blame residents, some blame Safeway, some blame funding/tax break issues. But are we not entitled to an honest answer?

So once and for all – should the Georgia Ave Safeway be upgraded? If so, what is the responsibility of Safeway, our elected leaders and/or the residents to make sure this happens.  I believe that Mt. Vernon Square (City Vista), Adams Morgan, Georgetown, Navy Yard (SW Waterfront) all have new or upgraded stores.  Besides Petworth what other neighborhoods do you think are due for an upgrade?

I can tell you when I walked into the Georgia Ave store this weekend I was hit with a foul odor. When I walked into the Wisconsin Ave store, I could swear that the aisles were paved with gold. Not to speak for all but I’d be happy with half as nice an upgrade in Petworth.

“Dear PoP,

I wanted to let you know that a local Petworth based author and my dear friend is going to have a book signing today in Petworth. She is an amazing Petworth woman who is worth noting. She is a female, African American Washingtonian author. She wrote the book based on her experiences traveling around the world when she was a child. Her father was a Foreign Service Officer and last Post Deputy Chief of Mission, Tunis, Tunisia.

“Dear PoP,

I’ve always thought it would make sense for Smartbike to have stations at some farther locations in DC. I mean, isn’t the point to cut down on traffic? If so, they’re not going to do the trick by only offering bikes in such a small radius! Any way to start a community petition (on your website ;-) to get a bank of bikes in Petworth?”

You are in luck – DDOT just released a press release this morning (Bike to work day and all) announcing Bike Sharing’s expansion. I know Columbia Heights is slated to get some but I’m not sure about Petworth. If folks want Petworth to get a spot as well be sure to leave that sentiment in the comments and I’ll be sure to forward to DDOT.

Here’s the press release:

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, Arlington County Board Chairman Jay Fisette and District Department of Transportation Director (DDOT) Gabe Klein today announced a joint effort to expand bike sharing tenfold in the Washington area. Both Arlington and the District have each signed contracts for what will become a regional bike sharing system later this year.

“We are extremely excited to lead the nation once again in bike sharing,” said Mayor Fenty. “The response to the bike sharing program has been unprecedented and we are pleased to be able to join with Arlington in our expansion efforts.”

This expanded, regional system follows the success of SmartBikeDC, launched in 2008. The new system will launch later this year with roughly 1100 bikes at 114 stations and will be largest of its kind in the U.S.

Continues after the jump including a naming contest for the new system at the bottom of press release. (more…)

Over three years ago I wrote about Kilroy’s cleaners on Upshur St in Petworth. At the time their customer service was terrible. But I told the owner if service improved I’d be happy to let folks know. Well that day has come. They have a completely new staff who could not possibly be nicer. It was amazing. Truly a 100% improvement. So I’m happy to report that Petworth has a great dry cleaning option.

For those a bit west I hear French’s cleaners on 14th Street are pretty good as well. Any other hidden dry cleaners out there that folks should check out. We spoke about OXXO and Georgetown Dry Cleaners here. I have to admit I’m still sorta mesmerized by the automatic pick up at OXXO…

But back on point – if you live in Petworth – Kilroy’s cleaners now officially get’s the PoP seal of approval. I’m not exaggerating when I say it is a pleasure from drop off to pick up. Congrats to the owner who understands the worth of good customer service.
