“The Sixth Annual Kingman Island Bluegrass and Folk Festival is less than a week away.  This year’s festival features an amazing array of Bluegrass, Folk and Americana talent with co-headliners Cabinet and Larry Keel Experience and more.

The Festival will include eight hours of performances on six stages by local bluegrass, folk and americana artists, games and outdoor beverages, DC’s favorite food trucks, bike parking, free kayaking, sponsor activations, local vendors, giveaways and a number of activities for children of all ages including a family area with music, arts, & crafts.

“Over the past six years, the Kingman Island Bluegrass Festival has grown from a small concert with a few hundred neighbors into one of the largest bluegrass festivals in the region. This event brings people to Kingman and Heritage Islands on the Anacostia River and provides them an opportunity to see the natural beauty that exists right here in our city. Enjoying a day of great music on the island is a fun and unique experience. Metro Transit Police announce Arrest in stabbing of station manager at Stadium-Armory

From WMATA on Monday:

“Metro Transit Police detectives today arrested Melissa Langley, 20, of Southeast Washington, DC, on charges of assault with a deadly weapon (knife) in connection with a March 15 incident at Stadium-Armory in which a Metro station manager was stabbed.

On March 15 at approximately 11:45 a.m., MTPD and medics responded to Stadium-Armory for a report of a station manager who had been stabbed by a female patron following a fare dispute. The station manager was transported to a local hospital and survived his injuries.

Langley was arrested without incident at her residence this afternoon.”

The Dangers/Joy of Public Shaming with Grainy Video – Case of the “slovenly” “trespooper”

It starts with a grainy still image of the video posted to the Hill East listserv:

“Do you recognize the man or dog in this photo? My wife and I have video of this man leaving his dog’s waste outside our home.

Before I’m scolded for overreacting, let me say that if this were an isolated incident, I wouldn’t have resorted to public shaming. Unfortunately, piles of pet waste are an all too common site on the curbs of A Street.

As a dog owner myself, who picks up our dog’s waste every single time (and throws it away in our own can), I find this irresponsible behavior especially infuriating. If the trespooper is on this listserv, I strongly urge you to stop leaving your dog waste outside our house. It’s as unsanitary as it is unsightly.”

Later that evening another resident writes:

“Speaking of public shaming, might I say that he is a slovenly individual.”

The next day:

“I do recognize him and my dog. He is “slovenly” dressed because it was Sunday morning and he was on his way to pick up breakfast. I will remember to make sure he has his top coat and tails on the next time he leaves the house.

The dog was NOT pooping (happy to take back if given actual proof.) Yes – she does LOOK like she is pooping, but she is actually peeing. We regularly clean up after her (and if we see other instances of people who haven’t cleaned up).”

But wait, later that day:

“Well. I must take something back. I do appreciate you sharing the video because I am able to give some peace of mind to my dapper man that that picture isn’t him.

So while I am sure you won’t believe us. But my pup is in the clear.

Now I hope everyone has a brilliant weekend and don’t forget to clean up after your pups!”

Officer Involved Shooting at Potomac Ave Metro – Suspect Deceased

Update from MPD:

“The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a fatal Metro Transit Police involved shooting. Preliminary investigation has determined that on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at approximately 9:10 pm, members of the Metro Transit Police responded to a call of a partially clothed man at the Potomac Avenue Metro Station, in the 700 block of 14th Street, Southeast. During the incident, a Metro Transit police officer discharged a firearm at a male suspect. The male subject was fatally injured as a result.

The decedent information is being withheld until positive identification is made.

The investigation continues. Investigators are seeking information from any witnesses who may have been on the train or platform around that time. Anyone who has information regarding this case should call police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, information may be submitted to the TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.”

Update from Metro Transit Police:

“With concurrence from MPD, the following information has been authorized for public release as a result of the preliminary investigation:

At approximately 8:50 p.m., the train operator of a Franconia-Springfield-bound Blue Line train notified the Metro Rail Operations Control Center of an unauthorized subject in the tunnel between Stadium-Armory and Potomac Avenue stations.
At 8:52 p.m., the reporting train was secured at Potomac Avenue and the track was taken out of service. Third-rail power was de-energized by the Rail Operations Control Center.
Metro Transit Police dispatched officers at 8:53 p.m.
The first transit police officer arrived on scene at 8:57 p.m. Three additional MTPD units arrive prior to 9:01 p.m.
The MTPD officers initiated inspections of the tunnels that lead into Potomac Avenue.
Shortly before 9:10 p.m., a responding MTPD officer encountered a male subject in the westbound tunnel approximately 400 feet east of Potomac Avenue Station.
During that encounter, the MTPD officer discharged her department-issued service weapon, resulting in fatal injuries to the male subject.
There were no injuries to MTPD officers.
The identity of the decedent will be released by MPD.
The name of Metro Transit Police officer involved has not yet been released. She is a veteran officer with more than 10 years of service.
As is standard protocol, the officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave during the review of use of force.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or may have seen the male subject in or around Potomac Avenue Station, or the adjacent stations of Eastern Market or Stadium-Armory, is asked to call Metropolitan Police at (202) 727-9099 or Metro Transit Police at (301) 955-5000.”

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser, joined by Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Brian Kenner, signed her first Land Disposition Agreement (LDA) for a roughly 2 acre parcel of the Hill East District Development, a 67-acre site located between the eastern edge of the Capitol Hill neighborhood and the western shore of the Anacostia River.

“This is a great day for a community that began planning Hill East’s revitalization nearly 12 years ago,” said Mayor Bowser. “The signing of this agreement will advance this catalytic project and transform an historic neighborhood, bringing more affordable housing to residents in the District of Columbia.”

The LDA for the sale of the Hill East District Development was a joint venture between Donatelli Development and Blue Skye Construction. This is a significant milestone for a project that will include 354 housing units (106 will be affordable), up to 40,000 square feet of retail and create a combined 120 construction and permanent job opportunities for District residents. A public village square and green space adjacent to the Stadium-Armory Metro Station is also planned.

The LDA now paves the way for construction to begin next year, with a completion date scheduled for 2018. Once fully built, this new waterfront community will connect the surrounding Hill East neighborhood – home to nearly 14,000 residents – to the Anacostia waterfront via tree-lined public streets, recreational trails, and accessible waterfront parklands.”

From Councilmember Charles Allen’s Office:

“This afternoon Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen attended the signing of the city’s Land Disposition Agreement for the transfer of two parcels to Donatelli Development and Blue Skye to begin the redevelopment of Reservation 13.

Allen said, “Today is a big day for Reservation 13, the Hill East neighborhood, and the entire city. It’s an important step toward realizing the vision for and full potential of this corner of the city, as well as finally delivering on promises made to the Hill East community. Bringing over 100 new affordable residential units, over 100 new jobs, and much-needed retail amenities, this project will begin the process of redeveloping Reservation 13 and extending the Hill East community to the Anacostia River.”

The DC Council approved the surplus and disposition of Parcels F-1 and G-1 last year. Mayor Bowser’s signing today of the resulting Land Disposition Agreement allows Donatelli and Blue Skye to move forward and begin construction on the project.”
