I’ve always been a big fan of Brown Street in Mt. Pleasant. There is one section that has new(ish) rowhouses. It looks like they were built in 2004. I’m glad to see what they look like on the inside. How do you think they came out? $729,950 sound reasonable?

Ed. Note: Unit A is also available for $699,000.

Sangria Cafe is located at 3636 16th St NW. Here’s another one I’ve always been curious about. It is so nondescript you could easily walk right past it without realizing it’s there. I know there are fans of the Woodner building, so any fans of the Sangria Cafe? Is it more of a restaurant or bar?

I’ve mentioned that a new Yoga Studio, Past Tense, is coming to 3253 Mt. Pleasant Street. While still under construction, I was able to get a sneak peek. Some other cool things I learned is that they will be hiring a Spanish speaking Yoga instructor for classes in Spanish. Other neat features, they’ll have a pre-natal and kids class a bit later on (perhaps in the Fall). And on Friday nights they’ll have “Happy Hour” class with music (and perhaps some wine after class). There will be an open house on July 11th and the Studio will open July 13th.

And in other yoga news, Quiet Mind Yoga is also offering some deals:

” We’re offering a summer challenge to feel your best for fall! the idea is that folks commit to 3 days, 4 days or 5 days a week to start a regular practice to keep your mind cool and your body feeling great. (july 1 – august 31)

We’re also offering a YogaWorks 4-week teacher training in August. the early bird registration ends July 3rd. (August 3-28)

July and August unlimited classes are $150.”

I really like the dining room ceiling but it seems like some of the other rooms may benefit some updating. I know folks disagree about the difference between houses needing/requiring vs. benefiting from updating. Sure you can live quite well here but if you’re gonna drop $919,000 wouldn’t you want more updated rooms? Of course I too agree that keeping the historical details (and the bar in the basement) but this home looks a bit dated to me. What do you guys think $919,000 sound reasonable or should it be updated?

Back in May I told you about the new yoga studio, Past Tense, opening up at 3235 Mt. Pleasant Street, NW. Well, on Tuesday they had an outdoor class which seems to have been quite a success. They’ll be doing another free class in a week or so (I’ll be sure to post in advance this time!). Photos by Stacey Vaeth.

First we learn the Raven was getting renovated and now this! In various posts here I’ve read a number of comments from readers expressing their frustration over the slow development on Mt. Pleasant Street so hopefully this will provide a useful outlet. If you can’t make the workshop Wed. night please leave your ideas in the comments section and I’ll be sure to forward to the folks from the Office of Planning. If you can attend the event I’m told – “this is NOT a meeting, but an open house where folks can drop in and give their opinions and ideas on how to improve Mount Pleasant Street.”

So how would you improve Mt Pleasant Street?

From a press release:

On Wednesday, June 17, 2009, the DC Office of Planning will hold a public workshop in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood of Ward 1. The purpose of the workshop is to obtain community input on revitalization and development priorities for the Mount Pleasant Street commercial corridor in order to shape a revitalization plan.

The workshop will be an open house and participants may drop in any time from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm to give their input on various topics to include:

* Mount Pleasant Street Physical Enhancements
* Development Opportunity Sites
* New Economic Development (new businesses, retail)
* Assistance for Existing Small Businesses
* Promotion of Unique Neighborhood Character

The study area for the planning initiative includes Mount Pleasant Street from Park Road to the north down to Hobart Street to the south, as well as Lamont Street, Park Road and Irving Street from 16th Street to Mount Pleasant Street.

From the Mt. P Listserv:

“On Wednesday, June 3, 2009, DC Public Library held the second community meeting since showing the public preliminary design plans on March 26, 2009 for an expansion to the rear of the current Mount Pleasant Library building. There were more than forty people in attendance.

Although the public was expecting to discuss at least four design schemes, DCPL showed the already discussed plan to renovate within the existing walls and a plan they are calling Scheme F. DCPL staff concluded that the renovation plan would just not suit their “building program” so in essence the audience was given one choice, Scheme F — there was no compromise on this.

The architect, Henry Myerberg and Associates, presented Scheme F using a slideshow of images depicting the floor layouts and only a couple slides showing the real-world renditions of the expansion. You can find these here >> http://tinyurl.com/dcpl-mtpl-june3-plans

The full-expansion would increase the size of the library more than 4,500 square feet and extend back from the current building to the library property line. This would put a three-story expansion less than twenty feet from the apartment buildings adjacent and behind the library.

Community comments ranged the spectrum. Some audience members gave the new plans enthusiastic support despite seeing these details for the very first time. Others were visibly frustrated and upset, especially about not being given much choice and the lack of meaningful discussion around fire safety concerns.

So what do you think of the plans? You can also send feedback to The District Dynamos (who sent the original email) at

Thanks to Gabbie for following up and snapping some photos of the inside:

“The deal is they are trying to return to the original old look with booths from an old restaurant and neat retro light fixtures according to Merid. I ran into him out front he let me snap a few pics and said they would complete with the “oldfurb” in a couple days!”

I think returning to the original look with booths is going to be sweet. You? Check out this gem found on the wall:
