Back in June a reader asked what happened to the Ghana Cafe location on 18th Street in Adams Morgan. In late August we heard from WBJ that a Ray’s Hells Burger was going into the 18th St. location. It’s not clear whether that’s actually going to happen. Anyway in the comments we learned that Ghana Cafe was moving to 14th Street, NW. I don’t know about you but when I just read an address I have a tough time placing it. So I walked past the above photo and said, “ah, so this is where Ghana Cafe will be” and thought a photo would be useful. It’s actually a cool old building on 14th Street just south of Rhode Island Ave. and the 7 – 11 store at 1330 14th Street, NW. It’s look like there is still a bit of work to be done on the space but I’ll be sure to update when they open.

What do you think of the renovation? That one room with the huge window is pretty amazing. This 4 bed/5.5 bath is yours for $1,649,000.

An update from the discussion we had last week about the plans for 3500 block of Georgia Avenue.

“Dear PoP,

Thank you for posting information about the Weds, Sept 16th Special meeting of ANC1A. The meeting will start promptly at 7pm at the Park View Recreation Center located at the corner of Warder and Otis [From Kent Boese: Just for clarification on the location of the meeting, the address of the Park View Rec Center is 693 Otis Place and it is located on the northwest corner of Warder and Otis Place (entrance on Warder)].

I want to make sure all of your readers are aware of the facts as they stand right now, and make sure people don’t confuse past plans with current plans – as well as what our legal rights are as a community if we support or reject this proposal so I am hoping you will post this asap. I’ve also received a ton of emails and the following should help address those and the comments in your last thread on the topic. I have copied representatives from Central Union Mission on this email as well.

Here are the facts: In the missions application to receive a special exception they have abandoned the plans for a CBRF (or 250 bed mens shelter per the past proposal). They are proposing a mixed use with 100% affordable low to moderate income housing, and 3,576 square feet of office space that will be used by the mission and/or possibly a third party. This housing will consist of 37 units (21 one bedroom, 10 2 bedroom, and 1 3 bedroom). Continues after the jump including a comment from Council Member Graham and a response from the Mission (more…)

This spot at 14th and Church opened relatively recently back in March ’08. There is big sign saying they are moving and offering lots of sales:

The original store is located up the block at 1801 14th Street (at the corner of T St.). That spot will reopen in September. The location at 14th and Church is pretty prime, it’ll be interesting to see what goes in there.

Metrocurean wrote about this spot back in July but I finally walked by the location and noticed the alcohol permit.

I was wondering what was going to happen at this prime location at the corner of 14th and Church. According to Cork & Fork’s Web site:

“Cork & Fork is a place for wine and food lovers. Customers can attend monthly wine seminars as well as Wine 101 classes where they can develop their enjoyment of wine and food. The flagship store in Gainesville, VA opened in 2005 and was the first of its kind in the fast developing Western part of Prince William County where Gainesville has become known as the “Gateway to Virginia Wine Country” because of its proximity to a number of wineries in the Northern Virginia area. Besides carrying select Virginia wines, Cork & Fork stocks some of the finest wines, beers, and cheeses from around the world not available at your local grocery store.”

Sounds awesome. Thought, as others have noted, it is crazy that there will be Cork wine bar, Cork’s new market (same owners) and now Cork & Fork (different owners) all within a few blocks of each other on 14th Street.

“Dear PoP,

As you might have noticed, there is a commercial building being renovated on 14th Street, right next to this porno/bike store you wrote about.

http://www.princeofpetworth.com/2009/04/hidden-bike-shopvideo-rental-store/

Well, the building they are renovating (forever now it seems like) has had this covering over the entire façade for the past month or so. They took it down today and it’s phenomenal what’s underneath; they’ve placed bronze all over the window bays; it’s going to be a baller building.”

Wow, looks awesome. I was wondering what these were gonna look like. The bronze (copper?) looks fantastic! This building is on the 1300 block of 14th Street, NW. Thumbs up or down?

What can I say? It’s Church Street Monday here at PoP. The space at 1457 Church Street, NW which used to house Dragonfly is becoming a hair salon. I peeked in the window and it looked like some major work had been completed. I stopped in next door to NIMBUS hair salon to see if they knew what was going in. NIMBUS’ owner, Yusuf Baptiste, told me that Immortal Beloved Hair Salon will be taking over the space. Interestingly, I asked him if he was concerned that another hair salon was coming in right next door to him. On the contrary, he said, the idea of more folks on the street will bring more commerce to the whole block. (And of course we learned that CrossFit is going in a couple a storefronts down.) Mr. Baptiste’s NIMBUS salon has been on Church Street for four and a half years.

“JUST REDUCED!!Amazing location 1 bedroom 1 bath with low condo fee’s parking and large private terrace! One block from Whole Foods and Vita Fitness”

More info and photos found here.

While this is most definitely a great location, I’m concerned that none of the pictures show any windows. I also think it’s a bit odd there is no photo of the living room. I was curious about this condo because I think this section of Church Street has a great feel to it. The original asking price was $449,900 but has now dropped to $429,900. Think that sounds reasonable given the location?

The space that formerly housed Eco Green Living is becoming a gym. But not any ordinary gym – it’s becoming a CrossFit. For those not familiar with CrossFit you can sign up for a 3 session workshop and read more about it on their Web site. The owner of this space, which opens today, John Main, said that basically CrossFit is “constantly varied, functional movement, performed at a high intensity”. All I know is that my Uncle, in his 60s, does CrossFit and can easily kick my ass. Though I guess before he did CrossFit he could still kick my ass… Anyway, it’s great to see Church Street filling its empty storefronts particularly with a great spot like this.
