“Dear PoPville,

I live in Logan Circle and I noticed the the “For Rent” sign is no longer in the window at the Old Shirt Laundry at the corner of 14th and Q. Also, the “curtains” blocking the windows seem to have been pulled down. I was wondering if it possibly has been rented or whether something else is going on there. If you recall there was a rumor that Stephen Starr (Philadelphia Restaurantuer) was looking into the space. It would make a great place for a restaurant.

Any insights into what might be going on?”

There has been tons of speculation about this sweet spot at the corner of 14th and Q St, NW. We’ve heard the possibility of an Italian restaurant as well as the interest of the Starr group from Philadelphia.

I’m psyched to be able to share some concrete news based on a recent liquor license application. Though we don’t know the name of the new spot we have learned that a group called Parc Deux Restaurant Partners, LLC has applied for a liquor license for a:

“This is a French restaurant, bistro, and café serving classic French cuisine for breakfast, lunch dinner and brunch. Recorded back ground music will be provided. No nude performances. Number of seating 246 and Total Occupancy Load of 275. Number of Sidewalk Café seats is 44.”

Sound good?

As to who Parc Deux Restaurant Partners really are – well a quick search shows that they are based out Philadelphia…

More info when it becomes available.

From a press release:

“The owners of Logan Tavern have announced the appointment of Alexander Zeppos as the restaurant’s new Chef de Cuisine. In this role he will oversee the culinary operations for the Logan Circle eatery.

Most recently, Chef Zeppos was the Executive Chef and Director of Operations for Growlers of Gaithersburg, Maryland where he oversaw the culinary and business operations for the historic restaurant. Under his management, Growlers received numerous awards from the Brewers Association of Maryland as well as Zagat.

Prior to his position at Growlers, Chef Zeppos was the Executive Chef at Local 16 in Washington, DC from 2004-2006. In addition, he’s held a variety of local culinary positions including Executive Sous Chef at Zaytinya, Jaleo, and Ardeo.

Chef Zeppos brings unique culinary skills from his experience at these different concepts, ranging from American, Greek and Spanish. His years in cooking for both casual and more upscale dining rooms make him an ideal fit for the popular Logan Circle restaurant. His breadth of knowledge and strong personal commitment to local farmers and ingredients will build upon Logan Tavern’s excellent reputation of supporting sustainable farming and the purchasing of ethically raised animals.”

Logan Tavern is located at 1423 P St, NW.

More changes in store for Great Wall Szechuan House located at 1527 14th St NW in Logan Circle. Over the summer they got their liquor license and this weekend I noticed that they have a building permit posted:

I stopped in to chat with one of the owners and while there was a bit of a language barrier, I was told that they will be completely renovating the dining area. Construction should start next week or soon there after. Construction will probably take 3-4 weeks. During that time they will remain open for delivery and take out options.

Below is what the inside looks like now. I can’t wait to see how the renovations turn out.

Thanks to all who wrote in about this property hitting the market. Daryle writes:

“After four decades in the neighborhood, the pastor of the Beginning Church of God has put his large property at the corner of 13th and S on the market.

Many PoP readers may know Rev. Sutton (now in frail health, and living with family in the area) as a familiar face at the corner of 13th and S streets, where he would greet passersby most mornings throughout the year and without fail on on summer afternoons. Until his wife passed away in 2009, the reverend and his small congregation were also known for the rockin’ music that came from the church on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings.

The physical condition of the three-story brick house on 13th Street (adjacent to one of Duke Ellington’s childhood homes) and adjoining church on S Street is very poor. There are numerous issues for a landlocked (no off-street parking) lot the sits at the intersection of two historic districts (Greater U Street and Greater 14th Street). But, the potential for a fine rehab at a fantastic corner is tremendous.”

Ed. Note: In the dozens of times I’ve walked past this property I could always count on a friendly smile from Rev. Sutton. He will be missed.

The flier for 1801 13th St NW says:

“ENTER AT OWN RISK, vacant property needs full rehab. OFFERS DUE MONDAY NOV. 7 by 5pm. Formerly used as 3 units, enter upper units on 13th street side. Enter main level unit from S street. Please conduct all inspections prior to offer submission.”

It’s going for $599,000.

Good Deal or Not Revisited (GDoN-R) posts have profiled sales for a range of properties including formstone-laden Victorian castle-like structures, a multi-million dollar contemporary overlooking Rock Creek Park, gut renovated Victorian not-so-castle like structures, a post war apartment building turned condo, and plenty of porch front rowhomes built in the 1920’s and 30’s. Depending on what neighborhood in DC you might find yourself, the architectural vibe can be quite different from block to block. Clearly tastes, technologies, and perceptions of amenities change from one stylistic era to another. Personally, I enjoy stepping into the past and imagining the 1970s homeowners’ delight at upgrading to Harvest Gold Kenmore appliances.

Standard is located at the corner of 14th and S St, NW. You can see their menu here. How’s the bbq? Anyone try the donuts yet?

Full disclosure – after I took the photo above they gave me an apple cider donut. It’s hard for me to judge because I was starving at the time but in the .2 seconds it took me to devour it, I thought it was delicious.

I always stop to admire this building. But when I did a quick search to see if we’ve looked at any other condos here – I saw that we judged this one back in Feb. ’11. At the time the asking price was $867,500. Today unit #1 is going for $725,000 ($334 monthly condo fee) – sound more realistic?

The Taylor Gourmet coming to the old Ruff n Ready space at 1908 14th St, NW is progressing nicely. Ed. Note: Ruff n Ready is now located at 4722 14th St, NW. For those that remember Ruff n Ready – it’s wild to think that is what it looks like inside now:

The only thing I don’t understand – given how delicious their sandwiches are – why highlight Hellmann’s mayonnaise on the sign out front?
