“Dear PoP,
One of our favorite food spots in town is Thai X-ing at Florida Ave and 5th NW – best Thai food in the city. But over the last month, nobody seems able to get hold of Taw (owner/chef) – nobody answers the kitchen phone or calls back when a message is left, and Taw’s cell is out of service. We’ve not had a chance to go by the restaurant itself, but we’re wondering if anybody knows what’s going on – we would hate to lose this wonderful little gem of a restaurant!
Anybody know what’s up?”
Uh-oh. We judged this restaurant almost exactly a year ago and there were tons of fans. Any regulars know what’s going on?

This home is located at 1714 4th Street, NW:

I know some folks don’t like homes that are under contract for GDoN but I still think it’s worth discussing. This 3 bed/2.5 bath home was going for $519,000. Are you surprised it went under contract so quickly? What do you think of the home itself?

Thanks to a reader for sending in the video of the old Gage School demolition in LeDroit Park (2025 3rd Street, NW). You can see the rendering options here. I’m terrified to say it, but yes there will be a dog park incorporated…
“Dear PoP,
Went for a run the other day and noticed a very nice neighborhood that I did not expect to see. It’s along 6th St (above Florida Ave) and dead ends at U St, it was very nice with beautiful homes. Is there a name for this little neighborhood? I’ve lived near U St for quite some time and never knew it existed. Anyway, always something new around these parts and if you haven’t been there you may find some candidates for House of the Day.”
Yes, this is a beautiful neighborhood called LeDroit Park. I’ve taken many a walkabout through these parts. Definitely some amazing homes. You can see many of my posts from LeDroit Park here.

This home is located at 429 Warner Street, NW:
The flier says:
“This is 2 bedroom townhouse totally renovated. PLEASE NOTE: 2nd bedroom is small. Separate dining room & living room on 1st level. Deep rear Back yard with newly installed wood deck with beautiful yard for gardening. Hardwood flooring in main level & carpet, Central AC, Jacuzzi Tub, Conveniently located 3 blocks Shaw METRO on quiet 1 block Warner Street. Home Warranty & Job protection plan Conveys”
More info and photos found here.
Wow, I’ve never seen a listing say the “2nd bedroom is small” before. I wonder if that will make the home hard to sell considering it is only a 2 bedroom. The block itself is very nice. What do you think of the house itself? $429,000 sound reasonable?

This great balcony looks right onto Anna J. Cooper Circle in Le Droit Park.

Tons of readers wrote in on Friday about the possible Post Office closings in DC (photo above of Le Droit Park). We spoke of the Petworth post office back in March. The news of the potential closings were first reported in the Post’s Federal Eye blog. They wrote:
“The Postal Service has marked 677 post offices nationwide for possible closure or consolidation, according to a document given today to a House subcommittee holding a hearing on the future of American mail delivery. Among them are 10 post offices in the District and three in the Maryland suburbs of Hyattsville, Rockville and Silver Spring.”
Well, I for one think this is horrible. I use the post office from time to time to mail out t-shirts so it’s really convenient for me to have one in my neighborhood. But then again, I don’t really use the post office that frequently. So what do you guys think – should most neighborhoods in DC have their own post offices? Or have post offices really become a thing of the past?

4th and Florida Ave, NW
I’ve been getting a few emails about this great old property that we’ve looked at in the past. It seems the same person sent me a question that was also sent to DC Metrocentric. They report:
“The building itself dates back to 1898 and the work you may have noticed going on over the last few days is to bring the stone work and windows into compliance with Historic District requirements.”
The detail really is incredible:

It’ll be great to see it restored.

I finally saw the Yale Lofts located at 4th and New York Ave, NW. It is a huge building.

Anyone check out the units inside? what do you think of the building itself?
And here’s an update on the new building going up at Rhode Island Ave between 5th and New Jersey, NW.

And after the jump is one of my favorite buildings that we’ve seen before from Ledroit Park. (more…)
