Back in late Jan. we learned that Third Edition was closing in Georgetown and the space would likely become a Mexican restaurant. Turns out that Mexican restaurant will be a second El Centro according to Eater DC:

“the Logan Circle taco and margarita destination has confirmed it will open its second location in the Third Edition space at 1218 Wisconsin Ave. NW, hopefully by June.”

We judged the Logan Circle El Centro back in Aug. 2011.

Dear PoPville,

With the recent legal decisions around Jack’s Boathouse, have you heard if they will be relocating or if there is a way to get refunds for gift certificates there? Their website is now down and their phone number is disconnected. I got a large gift certificate I wasn’t able to use last year and hate the thought of wasting the gift.

Georgetowner reported:

“NPS awarded B&G Outdoor Recreation of Boston the contract to operate on the site of Jack’s Boathouse.”

Maybe they’ll be able to honor some or part of your gift?

Biking around Town is written by Josh Nadas (@dcliterate), a daily bike commuter & avid rider who works for the National Park Service, and lives in Mount Pleasant.

We are pretty blessed in Washington DC to have the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal Towpath available to us to ride on pretty much whenever. The path is car free, relatively flat, and generally uncongested – it has the makings of a great ride. It’s hard to write a lot more about the canal trail itself, because there is not much new to say.

One of the things I like about the canal is the opportunity to see wildlife. When I rode out on the trail, it was a bit drizzly and cool. The upside of which was the trail was nearly deserted and there was a ton of avian life. I was able to spot several different kinds of bird, and when I stopped for a snack, a turtle.

The trail itself is really easy to ride. It’s perfect for just about anyone, and any type of bike. The only bike I would not put on the trail is a skinny tire road bike. Pretty much anything with a flat bar is going to be okay, as long as you have reasonably fat tires. The path is a mixture of crushed gravel and sand, so having a slightly wider tire or some tread is desirable. The perfect bike is a cyclocross bike if you have one. I rode my single speed mountain bike, which was a little bit less than ideal but still fun.

Continues after the jump. (more…)

Ri Ra Irish Pub_georgetown
3125 M Street, NW

Last week Georgetown Patch reported that a Ri Ra Irish Pub would be coming to the former Mie N Yu space in Georgetown. From Ri Ra’s Arlington website:

Capturing the unique atmosphere of traditional Victorian era Irish pubs, Rí Rá was built entirely from authentic Irish salvage material. The main bar, the back bar and many of the features came from an old pharmacy in Dublin and are over 100 years old. The pub was meticulously restored in Ireland before being shipped to Clarendon.

The interior is rich and warm, constructed by notable craftsmen from the finest available materials of the day. The pub is an ideal use for the historic Virginia Hardware Store that previously occupied the site since 1924.

No doubt the many hard working carpenters that shopped at the Hardware Store over the years would appreciate the craftsmanship of the beautiful Irish pub.

Alongside the old and historic artifacts that the pub contains are pre-Raphaelite paintings that were replicated by hand during the months of construction to create a truly amazing and unique setting.

You can see their menus here. Anyone ever been to a Ri Ra before?
