Normally we look at multimillion dollar homes in Georgetown but it was pretty cool to get a (virtual) look inside this great old building. What’d you think of the tour?

This 1 bed (formerly 2 bed) is going for $575,000 ($1,022.80 monthly condo fee.)

The National Jewel Center is located at 1351 Wisconsin Avenue NW. You can’t miss it because it has the old (neon?) Georgetown sign out front. I went in to speak with the owners after seeing the for sale sign in their window. They said the last day is Aug. 31st though most of the store has already been cleared out. They said they’ve been open for over 20 years and back in the day the space used to be a theater. Cinematour says:

“Opened as the Dumbarton in 1913, a playhouse, this theater started showing movies sometime later. It was designed by architect William Nichols.

Located on Wisconsin Avenue in Georgetown, the movie house was renamed the Georgetown in 1947. It was also remodeled around this time in Streamline Moderne style. The Georgetown was closed in 1986 and is today used for retail.”

According to the for sale info the space is 6,086 sq ft (though no price is listed.)

While the space needs tons of work the potential is amazing. I know it’s a long shot but I’m gonna hope for a cinema pub/drafthouse.

West Elm’s Pop-Up Store opened Thursday in Georgetown at 3333 M Street NW.

A far cry from the hulking behemoth of organic bedding and chocolate-wood veneers that used to exist downtown, this is West Elm‘s littlest store and arguably their most charming one. As such, it carries a limited amount of furniture and focuses instead on their collection of textiles and accessories. You’ll find a lot of one-of-a-kind items here: hand-printed ethnic print pillows, vibrant throws made from recycled saris, and gleaming glass mosaic wall decor from India that’s traditionally used to panel elaborate buildings. There are also tons of soaps, candles, and little items that you’ll probably be happy you purchased on an impulse. I got a candle in my little gift bag that smells so good, even my husband approves: Paddywax’s “Library” scent.

Continues after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

There is a huge fire at building on the 3200 block of M street in Georgetown. Tons of black smoke poring out.”

I haven’t heard anything else from DCfireems. DCfireems tweets:

“3200 blk M St NW – comm bdg – fire from roof – 2 sty – heavy fire & smoke”

Update 1:04pm from DCfireems:

“Update – near Wisc & M St – 2nd alarm comm bldg fire – bulk of fire knocked”

Does anyone happen to know what building this is?

Update 1:06pm from DCfireems:

“Update – 3241 M St NW – Hook Resturant – M St closed – no inj – bul of fire knocked, checking extension”

From a press release:

The cause of today’s fire in Georgetown behind Hook and Tackle Box restaurants is yet to be determined. It is believed that the fire started outside of Hook in the loading dock, however there are no official details as of yet. Owner Jonathan Umbel is waiting on an official investigation from the fire department regarding specific details on today’s regrettable accident.

“The most important thing to me is that our patrons and staff are safe and no one was harmed. We want to thank the DC fire department, which was quick and responsive to prevent any injuries to our staff, neighbors and diners. Unfortunately, both Hook and Tackle Box Georgetown are going to be closed for repairs indefinitely. We will be working feverishly to repair the buildings to have them open for business for our loyal patrons. During this difficult time, Tackle Box’s Cleveland Park location will be open for business and we ask our fans to support our brand so that we may be back on our feet in Georgetown soon.” – Jonathan Umbel, owner of Tackle Box and Hook.
