Now this is one of the more confusing situations I’ve ever posted about. A recent liquor license application has been filed for a new bar to be called The Guitar Bar. It lists the address as 1216 18th St, NW and says:

Upscale tavern serving European sausages, hotdogs, pretzels and popcorns featuring DJ and background music. No designated dance floor – no dancing. Summer Garden with 210 seats. Seating capacity is 60. Total occupancy load is 330.

Sounds awesome right? However, 1216 18th St, NW is the address listed for the soon to be opening Shack Shake to be located in the former Fudrucker’s space at the corner of 18th and Jefferson Pl, NW (just off Connecticut Ave). So naturally, given the name, I assumed the bar would be moving into the space above currently (and for almost a century) home to The Guitar Shop:

Founded in 1922 by Sophocles Papas, The Guitar Shop has become a treasured Washington landmark. Renown for serving the needs of professional and amateur guitarists alike with everything from music, strings and accessories, through advanced private instruction. For those seeking a fine instrument, The Guitar Shop offers an unrivaled selection of hundreds of guitars, ranging from modest student instruments costing less than two hundred dollars to one of a kind virtuoso guitars valued at five thousand dollars and more.

The Guitar Shop has an international reputation, having over the years served patrons in more than one hundred countries. Here in America the shop has served everyone from the President of the United States to elementary school students. Numbered among its clientele are many professional folk, jazz, country, rock and classical musicians.

The shop represents many of the finest luthiers from the United States and around the world both as their artist representative to the professionals and as their sales distributor to the public. It has also been an integral part of the arts and academic community, working with most of the area colleges and universities as well as such respected organizations as the Smithsonian Institution, the National Geographic Society, the Kennedy Center, Folger Shakespeare Theater, Arena Stage, the Washington Performing Arts Society, and the National Symphony Orchestra.

Stephen and Lynda Spellman purchased the shop in 1968 from its founder who was also Steve’s instructor and mentor. Married since 1969, Steve and Lynda have worked side by side successfully managing the business as they raised their two children, Reed and Heather.

I spoke to Mr. Spellman at the Guitar Shop and he said he knew of no plans of a Guitar Bar for this space. The Guitar Shop is obviously a legendary space in DC. But as I’m now looking at the building clearly there are 3 floors. So perhaps the bar will be coming to the third floor and will also occupy a roof deck? I’ll be sure to keep my eyes on this corner to see if/where The Guitar Bar will call home. The liquor license application makes it sound like a roof deck/summer garden will be a large component so I wouldn’t totally rule out the location on the third floor of this building. More updates as they become available.

And on a side note, If you’ve never visited the Guitar Shop it is truly a wild store jam packed with guitars corner nearly every single square foot of the cramped space. Guitar and history buffs will enjoy a conversation with Mr. Spellman.

Back in the end of Feb. I shared some scuttlebutt saying that a Shophouse would be coming to 1516 Connecticut Ave, NW next to the BGR on the north side of Dupont Circle. We noted that back in Nov. ’10 it was widely reported that Chipotle would be opening up a series of Asian themed restaurants in 2011, likely to be called ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen.  I’m happy to say that the scuttlebutt we heard at the end of Feb. is the real deal.

A recent liquor license application posted at 1516 Connecticut Ave, NW says:

“Shophouse Southeast Asian Kitchen

New Southeast Asian Restaurant with recorded background music. Total Seating is 40. Total Occupancy Load is 50.”

We’ll def. be revisiting when they open.

This condo is located at 1723 P St, NW:

The flier says:

What do you think of that tour? I’ve been curious what these look like on the inside. This 2 bed/2 bath is yours for $739,000 (monthly condo fee of $506.88) – sound realistic?

Back in Feb. ’11 we learned that the old Pasha Bistro space at 1523 17th St, NW would be becoming Pizza No. 17. Thanks to all who emailed/tweeted about the new awning ( follow PoPville on twitter here). When I went to check it out last weekend – they were having a tasting. But because, from time to time, God hates me I had just eaten and was unable to try any. It does look good though (see below). Anyone else have a chance to try a slice? The owner I spoke to said they’d open Mon. or Tues. but I haven’t gotten an email so I’ll just stick with – they’re opening soon, really soon.

“Dear PoP,

The former location of Lambda Rising has now become…a Comfort One Shoes…which also occupies space in another location almost directly across the street on Connecticut.”

Every now and then I post scuttlebutt that I actually hope is wrong. Back in Nov. ’10 I heard that the old Lambda bookstore space at 1625 Connecticut Ave, NW would be becoming a Comfort One Shoes. Comfort One will be closing a current location at 1607 Connecticut Ave, NW but as the reader mentioned they still have another location across the street at 1630 Connecticut Ave, NW.

And stay tuned for more changes as we await a new tenant for the recently closed Coffee and the Works located at 1627 Connecticut Ave, NW.

“Dear PoP,

Heartbreaking for those of us in north Dupont. All the windows were broken out.”

Thanks to all who sent in emails about the very sad news.

Banana Leaves is located at 2020 Florida Ave, NW. On Sat. night/Sun. morning (12:30am) @dcfireems wrote:

“2020 fla Av NW – 2 sty restaurant; damage-$200K; cause-malf gas water heater; area of origin-2nd fl;no inj; alarms worked.

Bananna Leaves (Asian) Retaurant, 2020 Florida Av NW ; business closed at time of fire; no inj; health dept notified.”

Thankfully nobody was injured but based all the emails I’ve received people are very saddened by this news. We judged Banana Leaves back in Dec. ’08 to very positive reviews.

I’ll be sure to update as more info becomes available in general and on a possibly renovation in particular.

In addition to Banana Leaves, its next door neighbor Universal Liquor remains closed as well.

More photos after the jump. (more…)
