Thanks to a reader for sending word that Juice Zone had closed at 1921 I St, NW. And nearby by at 1911 I St, NW BonMi is opening up on Monday.

Since we were talking about the former Cities space in Adams Morgan, I figured it was time to judge the newly reopened location at 919 19th St, NW downtown. Their Web site says:
“Welcome to Cities – where getting away is just steps away from the outside world. A restaurant and lounge experience like non other, Cities offers a unique approach to international dining – guests are transported to exotic and far away destinations through eclectic and meticulously crafted menus and a stunning setting that is beyond compare in Washington, D.C. Located at 919 19th Street, NW, in the heart of mid-town, our 140 seat dining room and 100 seat outdoor patio and lounge beckon for lunch, dinner, drinks, brunch, private parties or casual gatherings with friends. On the menu, small plates provide an array of flavors and fresh options for lunch or dinner, late night or lite fare. Great service and attention to detail are the priority, to help transport you to a different place – from the far reaches of China, to the rich culture of Cuba – and from the ancient magnificence of Athens to the truly international city of Washington, D.C. – each element brings you closer to an experience that is at once inviting and exciting. Enjoy an extensive and finely crafted menu for a unique dining experience, for lunch or for dinner. Our small small plates menu celebrates distinctive and fulfilling flavors from great culinary and cultural destinations.”
You can see their menus here. Anyone check them out yet?

I’m totally blanking on the name of the restaurant – anyone remember what it was called? It’s on L St, NW just west of Connecticut Ave. There’s now a plaque there:

At any rate – and I never really understand why stores do this – Verizon is moving from it’s current location to right next door. They expect to make the move in November.

From a press release:
“ZGF Architects LLP, a nationally recognized architecture, planning and interior design firm, has been selected to design a new Class A office building at 1200 Seventeenth Street NW. Akridge, a comprehensive DC-based commercial real estate firm, and First Potomac Realty Trust, a leading owner of office and industrial properties in the greater Washington region, selected ZGF as part of a design competition among five firms.
The current 85,000 SF building, located on the corner of Rhode Island Avenue NW in downtown Washington, was built in 1964 and houses the National Restaurant Association. The building sold in 2011 to a partnership of Akridge and First Potomac Realty Trust. It will be demolished next year to make room for a larger, more sustainable development.
“ZGF brings outstanding credentials in design, and particularly in green building, to this project,” said Akridge President Matthew J. Klein. “Their knowledge and talents will be key to making 1200 Seventeenth the trophy we’ve envisioned.”
The new 170,000 SF speculative office building has 11 floors of office space, street-level retail, and amenities such as a roof deck and a fitness center. The design anticipates a LEED Platinum certification. Underground parking will be designed to hold 115 vehicles. The site is within the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District.”

1200 17th St, NW – October, 2011

The Woodies building that now houses Forever 21 at 11th and G St, NW is getting painted and looks pretty incredible. Thanks to a reader for the heads up.

“Dear PoPville,
In case you weren’t aware of it, 1800 Cafe, a hole-in-the-wall take-out place near Dupont Circle, has closed. According to the cafe’s Facebook page, it closed on September 30.
I would go here occasionally to get a sandwich. It was cheaper than most of the other lunch places in the area, and I liked that fact that it was family-run. It seemed to have steady business (at least when I would go there), so I was a bit surprised that it closed so suddenly. I’m also sad that we’re losing another local business.”
Were there any other fans?

The Madison Hotel is located at 1177 15th St NW (15th and M St, NW.) A Craigslist ad advertising for positions says:
“The Federalist is focused on resurrecting the culinary traditions of the Mid- Atlantic region. By exploring the food culture of a blossoming nation we have created a menu that is inspired by 18th century American food lovers and executed through local producers and purveyors. It will feature heirloom varietal vegetables and dishes inspired by the early American-European union, as well as the flavors of the vibrant spice route. Our focus is preparing thoughtful yet accessible cuisine.”
“…inspired by 18th century American food lovers” I’m intrigued. We’ll definitely revisit when they open.

While the sign on the door says Galileo III has simply closed for renovations – the Washington Post reports:
“The restaurant that was supposed to resurrect Roberto Donna’s sagging fortunes has now contributed to his decline. The celebrity chef confirmed this afternoon that Galileo III at 600 14th St. NW has officially ceased operations.”
Galileo III was located in the old Butterfield 9 space. I’ll keep my eyes on the space to see who will/what will take over.
