Reader Reports Shots Fired around 3:30pm Wed. in Columbia Heights

“Dear PoPville,

It didn’t get an alert from MPD, but two shots were fired on Irving Street across the street from the Tubman Elementary playground at 3:30 Wednesday. Heard them personally from about 100 feet away. I called 911 and they said someone else called it in. It happened across the street by the gate to the field. Kids were out on the playground for aftercare and were immediately brought in. It lasted about 10 minutes.

Two weeks ago there was a parent safety meeting at the school with MPD, DCPS, and Councilmember Nadeau’s office and they offered nothing to help the situation with shootings happening around the school.”

I got tons of messages yesterday starting around 5:30pm like this one:

“I just saw 10+ uniformed police at Columbia Heights metro, complete with a table set up for bag searches and a scanning device of some sort. A few uniforms said anti-terrorism, others TSA. I heard them telling people they stopped that checks were random. Do you have any context on this?”

Metro Transit Police have been doing random searches since at least 2008. We also spoke about random inspections in 2010.

16 Year Old Arrested Yesterday and Charged in the 9:39 am Double Shooting in Columbia Heights back in December

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District have announced an arrest has been made in reference to an Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun) offense that occurred on Monday, December 9, 2019, in the 1300 block of Park Road, Northwest.

At approximately 9:39 am, the suspect brandished a handgun and fired at three victims. (more…)

Just a non confrontational friendly reminder that Mi Cuba Cafe is an absolute gem in Columbia Heights

We’ve expressed our love for Mi Cuba Cafe over and over again. For good reason. It is a gem. Hard for some to fathom but it is quite possible to love them AND a completely different restaurant coming to the neighborhood – Taco Bell Cantina (and of course, the many other nearby places where you can get authentic tacos.) Hard to digest for some. Having said that, lest we take the awesomeness we already have for granted, allow me to remind you about them so we can enjoy them for many years to come. Los Hermanos too of course (some say one of Juan Soto’s favorites.)
