There are lots of reports on twitter (follow @PoPville) of a loud bang/boom/explosion near Meridian Hill Park in Columbia Heights. Some say they heard it also in Dupont, Adams Morgan, Petworth and Woodley Park. Some report windows rattling and car alarms going off. Most reports seem to center near Meridian Hill Park in Columbia Heights. More info when/if it becomes available. If you heard the boom please let us know where you heard it from?

One follower reports seeing smoke near 14th and Fairmont St, NW.

Another follower reports:

“loud as hell at 14th and florida. We’re between two cranes, maybe construction related?”

Also:

“we heard it at 16th & fuller, then heard some sirens”

Another says:

“I’m on the 7th floor on 15th, between Euclid and Fuller. I was on my balcony facing east about 15 seconds after the explosion and saw lots of smoke coming from a building on the north side of Fairmont street. Can say with complete confidence that the source of the explosion was between Fairmont, Girard, 14th and Girard St. Park. Also a strange smell, unlike anything I’ve smelled before. Two police cars were there within 3-4 minutes.”

MPD tells me:

“Nothing found. Pepco and Washington Gas are checking the area.”

Update 11:28pm:

A reader writes:

“friend at 14th+harvard claims power out after explosion. leads me to believe it was transformer explosion.”

“Dear PoPville,

In the night from Saturday to Sunday, several buildings and signs around the southern blocks of Columbia Heights (13th St. and Clifton, 13th St. and Euclid, alley 12th & Euclid, etc.) have been extensively tagged with “five-o” graffitis. Have you heard anything about that, or efforts to clean all this up? Our house has not been tagged itself so we were informed we can’t request removal ourselves.”

I’ve gotten a number of emails and photos about this. I’d rather not post the photos because I believe tags on occupied buildings and private property are nothing more than vandalism.

In Feb. ’11 we first spoke about the surge in graffiti tagging around DC. In Apr. ’11 we spoke about the difficulty in getting graffiti removed. In July ’11 MPD announced major graffiti arrests.

While I think a variety of preventative tactics are necessary, I like the way they attempt to prevent tagging in Paris.

From a press release:

“The Columbia Heights Community Marketplace received a $65,000 grant from the federal government earlier this week to help more low-income individuals and families purchase fresh, nutritious food, develop the local Columbia Heights economy and increase incomes for local farmers.

“This grant will help us get local food into the hands of our less fortunate friends and neighbors in Columbia Heights and beyond and also expand economic opportunity for family farmers in the Washington, DC region,” said Robert Schubert, executive director of the Columbia Heights Community Marketplace, a 501c3 non-profit organization.

In order to encourage individuals from all walks of life to participate in this market and increase access to nutritious food, the Marketplace doubles the value of various types of federal nutrition assistance — SNAP, WIC Get Fresh Checks and Senior FMNP coupons – up to $10 each week through its Festibucks program. This stretches low-income community members’ limited food budget to ensure that they can purchase nutritious food that will improve their health.

With this grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farmers Market Promotion Program, the Marketplace can now greatly expand Festibucks so that hundreds more low-income community members can purchase good food that’s good for them.

“This program was incentive for my children to be more involved in their nutrition choices,” said one user of Festibucks in 2010. “They found it fun to shop and make choices at the market.”

“Dear PoPville,

We live on the block between 14th and 13th streets on Quincy St. NW. Our alley looks like something out of the slums of Calcutta and has been nicknamed by the garbage collecting staff as the ‘vietnam’ alley because of all the trash that is illegally dumped and all the trash from the illegal group houses on this block where occupancy is at 19 for one of these Victorian townhouses. I’m wondering what can be done to expose the lack of attention that has been given to this problem (we have been here for 10 years) after numerous efforts to get the city to fine an ticket the landlords and of course just to clean up. There is now as u can imagine, a serious rat epidemic. Thank u for any suggestions u may have by exposing this awful problem that I feel so defeated by.”

Do you guys have any suggestions besides consistently calling your Council Member and ANC Rep as well as consistently calling 311 for illegal dumping pick up. No doubt this situation is an insult to Vietnam
