Future home of Lime Fresh on 14th St, NW at DC USA in Columbia Heights

Yesterday I showed you where DSW will be located at in DC USA on the Irving St, NW side. I was also shown a few other locations for other tenants that have signed leases. Today, we’ll look at Lime Fresh Mexican Grill which we first heard about in early January. From their Website:

“Fresh” “Healthy” “Organic” “Sustainable”
We’re sick of green-washed buzzwords you hear a lot but don’t mean much at all.

So, here’s our no-quote truth:
Our food is freakin’ good. It’s how we went from one bumpin’ burrito shop in hell-raising, health-conscious South Beach to over 11 (… and counting) along the East Coast.

Why’s our food so good?
We use the best ingredients available, including humanely raised meat and produce that’s delivered daily and prepared on-site for all our homemade salsa, sauces and sides. Plus, we really care if you like it. We make your meal however you want it, bring it out to you and bring it back if it’s not perfect. We’re cool like that.

We also have vegetarian, low-carb and low-fat options. But we’ll be the first to tell you that a mound of sour cream on a low-carb wrap… still has a mound of sour cream. So keep it in check Madam Denial.

So, yeah. If you want delicious, freshly-prepared Mexican food with a precocious, often-offends attitude … then welcome. We like you already.

You can see their menu here.

So they’ll be located on the 14th St, NW side between the Payless and Radio Shack. The space is about 3500 square feet and needs a complete build out. While they hope for a spring opening, I’m guessing it’ll probably happen in early summer.

Ed. Note: ‘What’s Shakin’ in the Makin’ was formerly known as ‘Danger Watch’, a series that looks into the “coming soon” status of restaurants/bars.

We last looked into 3313 11th St, NW back in Aug. 2011. At the time we learned that the Taqueria from Jackie Greenbaum had already received it’s liquor license.

Washingtonian now tells us:

Jackie Greenbaum, whose restaurant Jackie’s helped to usher in the era of suburban chic when she converted a Silver Spring auto parts store into a trippy enclave of pink pillows and quirky comfort food, is set to open El Chucho’s Cocina Superior in Columbia Heights this May, serving “inauthentic Mexican food.”

The forthcoming taqueria, located at 3313 11th Street, Northwest, will seat 40 inside, with an additional 16 seats outside and another 40 on the roof.

Greenbaum is aiming for a Cinco de Mayo opening.

More details on the menu here.

I love the name “El Chucho’s Cocina Superior” and I’m so glad I can finally stop referring to it as the “new taqueria” coming to 11th and Lamont St, NW across from Room 11. Though, I’ll be interested to see how 40 people can fit on the roof.

A reader recently nominated the lot at 1443 Chapin St, NW for a horse’s ass award. Another reader sends word that the lot has just been sold at auction.

They write:

“This morning there was a sign posted on the fence that said “this property sold at tax sale.”
That sounds like potentially great news for the former home of the Privado.”

Anyone happen to know who bought it?

Last week I shared an awesome historic photo of an old trolley car posted at Trolley Park, opening soon at 11th and Monroe St, NW. It keeps getting better – they just added a couple of oversized old tokens to the fence:

I’m really digging all the history they’ve included in the park:

Future home of DSW on Irving St, NW in DC USA

Back in March 2011 we first heard that a DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse) was coming to DC USA in Columbia Heights. I was having a tough time visualizing where it would be located. So last week I finally got a tour from DC USA’s Director of Building Operations, David Stein. And holy cow, this is gonna be a way bigger deal than I thought. So it turns out there is going to be a whole second wing called the Irving Street wing which will have it’s own entrance and lobby accessible, naturally, on Irving St, NW just west of 14th Street:

And DSW will occupy 22,000 square feet over the entire second floor. If construction goes according to schedule they will be open in July/August.

Future location of escalator to 2nd floor and DSW

The first floor will consist of 2 more retail tenants. There have been lots of discussions though both leases are still available. I’ll be sure to announce as soon as new tenants are found. In the meantime get ready for the opening of the Irving Street wing featuring DSW this summer.

This rental is located at 1312 Euclid St, NW:

The listing says:

“STUNNING 2 DRM/2 BATH CONDO JUST BLKS TO U ST. METRO, RETAIL AND RESTAURANTS. TWO PARKING SPACES, OPEN FLOOR PLAN, GOURMET KITCHEN AND IN IMPECCABLE CONDITION.”

This 2 bed/2 bath is going for $3,000/Mo.

Dear PoP,

You think you could Post something on the little corner store at the southwest corner of 13th and Otis? It has been closed for two days or so and I’m getting concerned. I love the store and the charming Ethiopian woman who owns it. One time she gave me a free meal when I complemented the wonderful smell of whatever was cooking. I hope the place will be open again soon.

I think it may have been involved in the recent bust by the major narcotics unit of MPD. Anyone else know/hear anything?

UPDATE: A commenter writes:

“The owner went home to Ethiopia until Feb 22/23. No drug bust! It will reopen before the end of the month.”

Dear PoPville,

I have been looking everywhere for the number of the so called “best kept Mexican food in DC” and I have had no luck. It’s called Rosa’s, its in Columbia Heights and the only access is by finding her phone number. I thought maybe you might know more about it or how I can find the number. Anyway below is a article talking about it.

“What’s the best kept food secret in Washington?

It’s Rosa’s, said chef Spike Mendelsohn, owner of the Good Stuff Eatery and We, The Pizza restaurants on Capitol Hill, during a panel Wednesday. He explained that to eat at Rosa’s, you must find and call a secret phone number. The mysterious Rosa, a resident of Columbia Heights, answers and makes sure you’re downstairs before throwing a set of keys out her window. Once you let yourself into her apartment on the second floor of a residential building, you can feast on what Mendelsohn says are the best tacos he’s had.”
