In other bakery news Le Caprice DC which which opened in Jan. 2012 at 3460 14th St, NW in Columbia Heights now has some of the best outdoor seating in town.

These are the legit comfortable wicker chairs. And thankfully there are lots of them. The revolution continues on the 3400 block of 14th Street. And stay tuned for expanded hours coming in the next week or so.

Dear PoPville,

You commented on this building last September. And here we are in May with no movement at all. Does someone own this building? I know it would get bought up in a second if it was up for sale…

It’s embarrassing how long this building has looked like this. At one point someone suggested it should at least become a public art project. At this point I’d love to see a huge mural painted over it. Anyone know how to, legally, make that happen?

Dear PoPville,

I know the Park Road Giant gets a lot of smack on this website, particularly after the great-checkout-line-debacle, which led to a new store policy. But, I went to Giant today for the first time in a little while and I was floored, in a good way! It’s a million times cleaner, and although we’ve had to put up with a little confusion during the reorganization process, I noticed how much better the foot traffic flowed. They’ve also added some nice little finishing touches, such as individual yogurt holders instead of stacking the yogurts precariously. Anyway, now that they seem to be close to finishing the revamping process, I thought it was time for some much deserved props.

Back in Dec. 2011 we learned that The Pinch was going to replace the former El Salvadorena space located at 3548 14th St, NW. I’m happy to report they’ll be opening this Friday.

This restaurant, bar, and live music venue will feature specialty cocktails, contemporary twists on classic American fare and live music in a comfortable, neighborhood bar setting. The newly refurbished space will feature works by local artists and houses a broad selection of tap, bottled, and canned beer.

Beer info:
We will have 6 taps, and 30 or more bottles/cans. The list will be mostly American craft brews and will shift and change throughout the year. Our opening list will include- Omegang Hennepin, Flying Dog Raging Bitch, Anderson Valley Summer Solstice, just to name few…

The menu will be contemporary American fare (some highlights):

Appetizers– Pretzel Crusted Fried Pickles, Assorted sliders (Hoisan BBQ Duck, Caprese, Crab cake, Steak),
Burgers– my 2 favorites are the Jerk Turkey, and the Meat Lovers (topped with pulled duck, bacon, cheddar, and fried onions). Vegetarians- Will find a number of items on our menu, my favorite being the Portabello “burger”, a cap with spinach, sun dried tomato, garlic, sauteed onion, mozzarella.
Sandwiches– Walnut Crusted Talapia, and a Flank Steak Sandwich served with Chef Steph’s house made steak sauce

Initially we will be opening with just our main floor bar and dining area. We intend to open the performance lounge in the next couple of weeks.

Dear PoPville,

When I came home this evening, I noticed “Emergency No Parking” signs surrounding Cardozo High on the 13th St and Clifton sides. Apparently, there will be no parking permitted for the remainder of the year. I don’t remember being alerted of this in advance, and parking is
already hard to find most evenings. Do you know whom to call/email/visit to lodge a complaint and be heard (after the fact) on this matter?

Cardozo High School is undergoing a significant renovation and plans on reopening in August 2013. I’m surprised they didn’t alert resident of parking restrictions for such a long period. Was anyone else alerted to these restrictions?

Lots of folks have been wondering about the status of the Z Burger coming to the Tivoli (remember when this was Mayorga coffee?) in Columbia Heights:

From Aquiline, Laina (ANC 1A05) via the Columbia Heights Listserv:

There will be one FINAL community meeting with Z Burger in an attempt to resolve the three remaining issues of contention surrounding Z Burger’s sidewalk cafe (NE corner 14th St & Park Rd NW) application to the DDOT Public Space Committee. The issues, in order of concern, are:

1) proposed removal/relocation of an existing granite bench
2) proposed fencing around the seating area
3) number and arrangement of seats

The meeting will be:
Mon. Apr. 23
7pm
Park Triangle Apts., rooftop
1375 Kenyon St NW

Please attend if you can. Your voice is important to helping Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 1A – www.anc1a.org – make the best decision when it votes on the application at its Wed. May 9 meeting.

The community’s desired alternative proposal and Z Burger’s best counter (Option 1) are attached for your review.
