“Dear PoPville,

Any idea what’s happening behind the BP gas station at 14th and Euclid? I see they’re tearing out the nasty park that was there. Does anyone know what’s planned for that lot?”

Back in 2010 there were plans for the Justice Apartments:

“The District has announced redevelopment plans for the former Justice Park site at 1421 Euclid St, NW. The $11.5 million project will include 37 apartment units, all of which are reserved for low-income households earning between 30 to 60 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI).”

And in July 2010 we looked at some renderings:

In May 2012 the plans for Justice Apartments were slightly tweaked:

From MPD:

“Arnold Moody, 45, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced to a prison term of 6 ½ years for robbing and beating a man earlier this year in front of an apartment complex in Northwest Washington, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. announced.

Moody pled guilty in June 2013, in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, to one count of robbery. He was sentenced by the Honorable Michael Ryan. Upon completion of his prison term, Moody will be placed on three years of supervised release.

According to the government’s evidence, on May 3, 2013, at about 3 a.m., Moody stood by the entrance of an apartment complex in the 3400 block of Holmead Place NW, pretending that he either lived there or was there to visit someone. When he noticed the victim approach the complex and sit down, Moody looked around to see if anyone else was around. Then, without warning, he walked over to the victim and punched him in the face multiple times, causing a broken nose.

When the victim got up to defend himself, Moody slammed him to the ground. Then he went through the victim’s pockets and stole his wallet, which contained $40 and an identification card, and an iPhone. In addition to the broken nose, the victim suffered a dislocated shoulder in the attack. He continues to have pain, difficulty seeing, frequent headaches and nosebleeds. (more…)

11th Street is about to get some more outdoor dining options. The Coupe at the corner of 11th and Monroe St, NW is looking to add a 50 sidewalk cafe according to a liquor license amendment. Though The Coupe is open 24 hours a day the sidewalk cafe could only be open:

Sunday through Thursday 10 am – 11 pm and Friday and Saturday 10 am -1 am.

El Atardecer is having a grand opening at 3475 14th St, NW (the former DC Fish Carryout space.) A post card announcing the opening says:

“A new location of La Morenita restaurant. Come join us for our grand opening celebration with lots of fun: Clowns.prizes.games and food and drink specials until Sunday August 25th.”

I chatted briefly with the owner who was a super nice guy. Looking forward to trying them out!

package_thief

“Dear PoPville,

Wanted to see how many people were affected by package thieves (or thief) in my immediate area. Our building, at 13th and Euclid, has been targeted very consistently (once a month to even a couple times a month) and a thief enters our building, steals packages (or just the contents) and leaves. We live in a 25 unit building with no doorman and a standard key fob/buzz in system.

Anyone else in the area getting hit regularly? Anyone have success with professional security/camera service? How about with a DIY web-cam type devices? Any cool ideas or “locker boxes” people use to secure packages?Anyone have ideas on how they get in (besides being buzzed in by a careless resident? Any other suggestions to deter and prevent?

We do encourage our folks to have things delivered to work and tell people not to buzz in unknown folks (even if they say they are the delivery man). But it still happens and it is getting very frustrating and we are not sure there is much the Police can help us with.”

In late July we admired the New Dunbar High School in Truxton Circle. Now check out the renovated Cardozo High School in Columbia Heights at 13th and Clifton St, NW. Thanks to Pablo Martinez Monsivais (the other Pablo) for sharing these amazing photos.

“Dear PoPville,

Last week we got egged on our front porch. Two eggs, poorly thrown but not that far off from hitting one of us as we sat there. Two weeks ago the same thing happened to my neighbor across the street [13th and Monroe St, NW].

Is this a thing? It’s such a petty occurrence that it hardly seems worth mentioning but I’m curious whether other folks are getting eggs thrown at them while they sit on their porches.”
