From the owner of Streets Market:

“Streets Market is excited to confirm that we will be coming to Cleveland Park in the next couple of months. We are very eager to be a part of this community, and carry forward the hard work the current family and team have put into Brookville Market over the past few decades. We will give the place a little freshen up, add some variety (conventional, organic, local, kosher, specialty etc), but stay true to our objective of being your local grocery store focused on quality, price, and great customer service. More to come as we get closer to opening.”

Ed. Note: Streets Market opened their first DC location at 14th and Belmont Street, NW back in 2014 and the second at 1221 Massachusetts Avenue, NW back in July.

From a press release:

“Award-winning restaurateur Ashok Bajaj of Knightsbridge Restaurant Group is pleased to announce the mid-March anticipated opening of his latest venture, SABABA, at 3309 Connecticut Avenue, Washington, DC 20008. SABABA replaces Cleveland Park’s 20-year landmark restaurant Ardeo+Bardeo, becoming the new neighbor to popular Bindaas, which remains in service during the buildout of the new restaurant.

SABABA, which comes from the Hebrew slang, meaning cool and carefree, will offer “modern Israeli” cuisine drawing inspiration from the Middle East, Turkey and Greece. The menu will be comprised of a nice balance of innovative cuisine and traditional fare. A large portion of the menu will be produce-driven. (more…)

Big grocery store news via the Cleveland Park Listserv:

“Just heard… Brookville will be closing in a few weeks, for renovation. Several weeks later, they.”

Last week a tipster told me that the whole grocery store was possibly being sold to a “small grocery store chain.” I have no idea if that happened or not but one thing’s for sure – a renovation will be most welcome!! Updates when more is known on the new management.

Here’s to hoping the Meats & Cheeses remain “Fresh”:

Ed. Note: Earlier this morning we learned that Sababa, “a salute to the cooking of Israel”, was coming to the former Ardeo space down the strip.

You could get whip lash if you’re not careful here. Whoa part five from Wake Up Little Suzie:

“After 40 years of running a retail business I have decided that it is time for me to retire. This was not an easy decision but I am excited and am looking forward to the next part of my life.

Words cannot express the gratitude I owe to each of you who supported the store over the years. Wake Up Little Suzie not only survived but thrived in Cleveland Park. (more…)

Ed. Note: Yesterday we learned that José Andrés’ America Eats Tavern would be coming to the former Old Glory BBQ space early this summer.

Whoa part three – thanks to Kevin for making sure we saw this tweet from the Post’s Tom Sietsema:

“Taking the place of the long-running Ardeo in Cleveland Park next month is Sababa, a salute to the cooking of Israel, says owner Ashok Bajaj. Ryan Moore, an alumnus of Zaytinya and other esteemed kitchens, will serve as chef.”

I told you this was gonna be good news!!

Updates as more is known.

Thanks to all who messaged me the news from Washingtonian:

“Cleveland Park mainstay Ardeo+Bardeo will serve its final dinner on Sunday after 20 years in business.

The new American eatery is closing to make way for an entirely new concept from restaurateur Ashok Bajaj, who’s behind the Oval Room, Rasika, and Bindaas (among others). The latter Indian street food spot, whose flagship adjoins Ardeo, will remain open as usual during the transition–a revamp that will include a change in cuisine, full design makeover, and new head chef.”

OK it’s no secret that Cleveland Park has faced some restaurant woes of late. This should not be added to that list. Despite the narrative – this news is most welcome. To put it bluntly – Ardeo had gotten stale after 20 years. Couple this with how fantastic Bindaas has been – I can’t wait to see Bajaj’s next vision!! A refresh to a business hindered by the antiquated service lane from such a successful restauranteur like Ashok Bajaj should be celebrated. This may be the only thing to resuscitate some life on this end of the strip with Bindaas. [Al Volo has been a welcome addition on the other end of the block.] Now if Ardeo/Bardeo had closed with no plans for a replacement – it would be a disaster. This is a blessing. I can’t wait to learn more. Stay tuned.

“Dear PoPville,

Sunday night in Cleveland Park my in laws saw and heard a coyote in the driveway around 4:30/5am. It was making a loud barking type sound. Apparently it is mating season. Was skeptical at first but read that during mating season they make this noise. It lasted about five minutes until they shined a flashlight and it ran away. This was on Newark Street.”

If you spot a hawk or any interesting wildlife around town, lunching or otherwise, and get a good photo please send in an email where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.
