Every now and then I like to walk around the Penn Quarter/ Chinatown neighborhoods. I used to work around here and I know lots of readers work in this area as well. I’ve always been a bit disappointed with the bar options. (They do have great restaurants.) So I was excited to see some alcohol application posters. The photo above from 507 7th Street, NW is going to be Iron Horse Tavern. It says it’ll be a “tavern with darts, shuffleboard tables and a juke box. Occupancy Load is 299.” To me, that sounds like an awesome addition to that stretch of 7th Street.

The blog PQLiving had previously noticed this spot a few weeks ago and is a great blog for keeping up to date on development news in Penn Quarter.

I still enjoy the surprise of stumbling upon these alcohol posters by chance. I saw another one at 418 7th Street (the old Olson’s Book Store):

This is slated to be an Asian restaurant called Wagamama. I hope it’s good but I miss the bookstore…

Petits Plats is located at 2653 Connecticut Ave, NW in Woodley Park. I’ve heard that the restaurant is quite good. You can see the full menu here. But I was also intrigued by the “Pizze” sign. Has anyone tried the to go Pizze? You can see the to go menu here. Any fans out there?

A great shot from Julia M. from the Chinese New Year parade in Chinatown, DC. Did anyone else check out the parade/fireworks in Chinatown on Sunday?

Join the PoPville flickr pool here. A couple more great shots from the parade after the jump. (more…)

Here’s another post for PabloMa. I’ve actually only been here once to watch a cool film on the national soccer team of Lichtenstein. The Goethe Institut is located at 812 Seventh Street, NW in Chinatown. It seems like they’re often hosting pretty neat events. I’m a little late on this one but they’ve been hosting a film festival called Film/Neu:

“Washington’s 17th annual festival of the newest in German, Austrian, and Swiss filmmaking brings a weeklong program of diverse films and special events to E Street Cinema and the Goethe-Institut January 23-29, 2009.”

Sadly tomorrow’s the last day but I’ll keep my eyes peeled and post future events.

Did anyone catch any films from this recent festival?

From a reader:

“A pedestrian was hit at 7th an H by a car going through a red light (I believe).”

Was anyone in Chinatown Sunday afternoon when this happened? Have you noticed that cars go through red lights all the time at that intersection? I hope they enforce that a bit better now.

Red Velvet Cupcakery and Tangy Sweet Frozen Yogurt are located right next to one another on 7th Street just north of E Street. I spoke briefly with Tangy Sweet owner Aaron Gordon who mentioned that his sister, Canada Gordon, actually owns Red Velvet. The cupcake pastry chef is David Guas who was selected as pastry chef of the year in 2004 by the restaurant association of Metropolitan Washington. There’s a lot more info on Web site.

Some of you may be familiar with Tangy Sweet’s Dupont Circle location. For fans of their frozen yogurt – to celebrate the Penn Quarter grand opening on Tuesday there will be free frozen yogurt and toppings from 4-8pm Tuesday, Dec. 23rd!

Check out the “Ticket Place” at 407 Seventh Street, NW between Chinatown and Archives. You can get tickets to “Theater, Dance, Music, Concerts, Lectures & more.” They are open Tuesday thru Friday from 11am – 6pm and Saturday 10am – 5pm. Or purchase tickets online here. Pretty cool, yeah?
