I know it’s XMas Eve and all, but my husband and I, while walking around Eastern Market this afternoon, found a cat wandering around the Crepe Stand. He didn’t have a tag, but did have a collar with a small bell on it. He is also front-declawed and very mild-mannered. I know he must belong to someone given that he seemed very sweet and comfortable around people (but not dogs). We took him to the Humane Society on New York Ave and they are putting a 5-day hold on him for his owner to claim him.He was scanned and didn’t have a chip. As of 3:00PM on Sat, he is entered into their system, under the name Rudy (short for Rudolph, hey, It’s Xmas and all).

Color/Type: Orange, Long Hair
Weight: Large Cat, prob. about 12-14lbs.
Found Location: Eastern Market
Distinguishing Features: Collar with small bell, Neutered,
front-declawed, “could” be a orange Maine Coon mix. Overall, in good

Update from MPD:
On December 23, 2011, at approximately 1712 hours, First District personnel along with D.C. Housing Police responded to the 1100 block of K Street, Southeast, (Potomac Gardens Housing Complex) for a shooting inside of an apartment building. Upon arrival on the scene, the victim was discovered lying inside the building’s stairwell suffering from a gunshot wound to the left side of the face. The victim was transported to an area hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. The suspect (B/M -light complexion – mid 40’s, approximately 5’7”) fled the building toward the rear alley of 12th Street, Southeast. First District personnel and D.C. Housing conducted a canvass of the area with negative results.
This case is currently being investigated by the Criminal Investigations Division of the Metropolitan Police Department

As many of you are aware we have experienced a rash of street robberies recently in the Capital Hill area of the First District. We experience increases of crime in various areas at times; however, our concern is heightened due to the exaggeration of this anomaly. I wanted to share some information concerning these offenses for your personal awareness.
Most frequent days of occurrence have been Fridays and Saturdays, with Friday accounting for 43% of the offenses
The peak time of the offenses is from 8:00 p.m. to midnight ( 70% )
Almost 90% of the robberies involve 2-3 suspects
Half of the robberies involved the theft of cell phones/I-phonesLt. Eddie Fowler, PSA 106, has implemented an operational plan to address the issue. Although we can not share specifics of his plan, I understand the community’s concerns and desire for information and want to advise that the below strategies have been implemented.
PSA personnel has been redeployed to the target areas
1D district-wide units have been deployed to the target areas
Several city-wide units have agreed to schedule some of their deployment in the area
CSOSA (DC’s version of Probation & Parole) has partnered with us to schedule “accountability visits” to persons under their supervision who reside in the area.
The First District Detective Unit has consolidated the assignment of these robberies to assist with identifying related offenses
A 1D tactical unit has been assigned to work within the area and coordinate information with investigatorsI would like to assure you that the First District is doing everything we can to address these issues; we have dedicated officers and managers who are focused on the situation. While we work to address the crime pattern we ask for the community assistance by adhering to the robbery prevention tips that were posted in the listserv and by calling 911 whenever you see suspicious activity and/or suspicious persons.

Back in July ’11 we learned that a new spot called Boxcar Bistro (though signage now says Boxcar Tavern) would be opening up in the former Petite Gourmet space next to Tunnicliffs at 224 7th St, SE by Eastern Market. The project is from Xavier Cervera, owner of Senart’s, Lola’s, and Molly Malone’s on Barracks Row. You can peek in the window and see that they’ll be opening any day now. Do you like the way it turned out?
