This is located at the house that had the stack of painted tvs (dang I can’t find the link) but anyway not really sure what this is. Something inspired by watching Mad Max one too many times?

Walking up 18th Street this Sunday I was lured by some live music from about a block away. Good to know that Columbia Station offers live jazz for Sunday brunch. Right on. A nice compliment to a lazy Sunday meal.

I’m all for peace and happy hours so this seems like a great combination to me. But as I was looking at the flyer I saw that it says, “We will also be spinning music of peace, justice and love. Listen to songs by Nina Simone, Jeff Buckley and Tim Buckley.” I’m not sure who Tim Buckley is but when I listen to Nina Simone or more likely Jeff Buckley I tend to want to cry, phenomenal music for sure, but a bit on the sad side, no? Nevertheless, I do strongly believe that Jeff Buckley’s album Grace is one of the greatest albums ever recorded. So let’s all get drunk for peace, justice and love on Friday!

I couldn’t possibly pick murals of the day without ever including this beauty. Of course with its beauty it may carry a particular curse because I seem to recall the restaurant underneath seems to close every few years. Still pretty cool how it takes up practically the whole building, yeah?

On Columbia Road you can get an old school ice where they pour the flavoring right over the ice. Raspberry is of course the best flavor.

Located at 2311 18th Street, NW in Adams Morgan, The Brass Knob, is another cool home furnishing shop. What differentiates this place from some of the others I’ve profiled is that this one focuses a bit more on antiques, particularly lighting. I spoke with owner Donetta George who told me that the Brass Knob has been open for 27 years! Apparently back in the day there were many antique shops in Adams Morgan. Another interesting fact I learned is that the Brass Knob was commissioned to do all the lighting at Temperance Hall (now Looking Glass Lounge). And you know how cool those lights are. Ms. George describes the store as primarily architectural antiques, lighting and hardware. So if you have an old school rowhouse and are looking to match one of the original door knobs this is definitely the store for you. And they also have some super cool stained glass. Check out more photos after the jump. (more…)

This guy was fantastic. I know it is not a very lucrative gig but I wonder why we don’t see more street musicians around town? I think I’ve only maybe seen 5 or 6 in over ten years living in DC. Are there ordinances that forbid street musicians or is it another reason or am I blind and just haven’t spotted many?

I’ve always been a devotee of Amsterdam Falafel but I hear Old City Cafe is also pretty good. Having spent a bit of time in the Middle East I’ve determined that it is all about the fixings. And Amsterdam has a terrific fixings bar.

I’ve never been to Old City, so for those who have been to both – which is better?
