I think this is a carriage house? In DC are they generally part of the property of a house or can you purchase one separately?

People are frequently writing me emails asking for suggestions on Bed and Breakfast places to have their folks or friends stay at. So I walked past this Adam’s Inn near Adams Morgan of course and it got me thinking about the question again. Has anyone stayed here or had family stay here? But for our neighborhoods of Petworth, Columbia Heights, Mt. Pleasant, Shaw and the rest can you recommend any Bed and Breakfast spots?

I haven’t heard this much (cyber)excitement since the Target opening. Thanks to a reader for alerting me this morning to the opening. The store is located at 17th and Kalorama Rd, NW. So I’m embarassed to say I’m not too familiar with Harris Teeter. Is it better than a Target opening? Or as far as groceries stores are concerned is it better than a Giant?

How come you don’t bells tolling more often. Do you need a special permit for that?

I would’ve walked right by had it not been for the phenomenal mosaic located on the stairway to the entrance. Capitol Hemp officially opened April 20th and is located at 1802 Adams Mill Road, NW #B and you can’t miss it if you keep your eyes open for the mosaic. There are also some sweet tunes that are playing from speakers projected outside the store. I had the opportunity to chat with owners Alan Amsterdam and Adam Eidinger. They told me that this is the first store in the US to be built out of hemp fiber board. Right on, I say. Artist Cesar Maxit designed the store. It is a small space but very welcoming. As I mentioned there are some sweet tunes playing and the owners and sales people are super friendly. As the US doesn’t allow hemp farming the store is stocked mainly from goods farmed in Canada. I had no idea so many things were made out of hemp but you’ll find them all in this store. There is clothing, soaps, olive oil, shoes, and even hemp milk. I think I’d have to consume a lot of the other hemp product before I drank hemp milk but that’s just me. Anyway, the store also features some cool art by an art collective called Art DC51. Speaking of art the cool mosaic was done by Jill Blankespoor and took about 10 days to assemble. In the future the store will also feature special events with DJs and art shows. Next time you’re in Adams Morgan just follow the Grateful Dead tunes to this cool shop. Photos of the interior after the jump. (more…)

Or at least the most moving? This sculpture, located on Columbia Road, outside a homeless shelter or temporary housing of Christ House an inpatient medical facility for people who are homeless and have acute medical needs, is really powerful. But then I was thinking that the standing water in the begging bowl is a great breeding ground for mosquitoes. What’s wrong with me?

I just noticed the old Common Share space on 18th Street has a new sign – The Blaguard. Anyone know when it is supposed to open? Think they’ll still have $2 pints?

I’ve always loved this row of rowhouses in Adams Morgan. It still makes me wonder if the owners coordinated on the colors.

The Sitar Arts Center is one of those places that just makes me you smile. You know when you just can’t bear to read the morning newspaper it helps to remember that places like this Center exist. Located at 1700 Kalorama Rd., NW, the Center was founded in 1998 but moved to this location in 2004. Originally an after school music program for inner-city children, the center quickly expanded, after the students asked for more, to include dance, art, painting, and creative writing. The Center is truly state of the art and partners with the Corcoran school of art + design, National Symphony Orchestra, Washington National Opera, Washington Ballet, Arena Stage and many others including a faculty of 120 volunteer teaching artists. I was fortunate to receive a tour from Development Associate, Adrianne Wegner. She told me that 80% of the students come from underprivileged homes in Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights and other parts of the city. Activities the students participate in include dance, art, music, painting, digital media, theater and more. I’m not really doing the place justice you should check out the website above to learn more. For example the students don’t just get music lessons they also take classes in music theory. Awesome.
