The Craigslist ad says:

My studio apartment is available for immediate move-in at $1095 a month. The details are below, but, suffice it to say, this apartment is great. My favorite part is its perfect location; the apartment is in a quiet, beautiful, and safe neighborhood, but it’s also 5 minutes away from 18th and Columbia, the main downtown area of Adams Morgan. 18th Street is alive on weekends because of its many restaurants, cafes, and clubs. Most importantly, the apartment itself is beautiful, with hardwood floors, great sunlight, and a nice view.”

Given yesterday’s request for suggestions of where to look for around $1000, this one jumped out at me. Think $1095 sounds good?

Last week I mentioned that there was some movement in the space at 1917 18th St, NW (north of T St). I happened to walk by last weekend when the owner was out front. He said the name of the new place will be City2Cafe and it will be a proper “Homestyle Deli”. He hopes they will be open by mid-late April. They will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner with seating inside and outside. This will not be a sit down restaurant with servers but more like a proper deli where you place your order at the counter. Sounds very promising. I can’t wait to check them out. I’ll be sure to update when they officially open, you can see there is still a bit of construction work left to do:

More movement on 18th Street, NW. This time a bit further south from yesterday. Lloyd’s was located at 1917 18th St, NW. The plywood recently went up and the permits say that the proposed use will be a restaurant. Anyone happen to hear what type of restaurant is going in here? I’ll be sure to update as this project develops.

“Dear PoP,

I was sitting in Tryst last night when I saw 3-4 police cars frantically drive back and forth, followed by an ambulance and a fire truck. It was later when I walked back to my building the officer on 14th and Girard told me there was a shooting on 16th and Kalorama (location might be off since I have the memory of a fish). According to him, the hispanic gang and the black gang have been fighting pretty badly in the past few weeks. The shooting on 14th and Fairmont was also between the same groups and one victim was actually a random person.”

Do you have any more information? I just moved to the neighborhood and would appreciate some safety tips…”

I only saw the following from MPD from the listserv:

“The police department is investigating a shooting which occurred in the 1700 block of Kalorama Rd of an adult male victim.

Anyone with information pls contact MPD on 202-727-9099 or you can provide information to the anonymous tip line on 1-888-919-CRIME or text to 50411”

The previous shooting at 14th and Fairmont was a targeted shooting involving no random individuals according to MPD. While it is sadly common for gangs or crews to feud this is the first I’m hearing of this particular flare up. In the reality of our world, these incidents usually don’t involve bystanders so I’m afraid there are no additional safety tips other than as usual being aware of your environment.

Thanks to a reader for sharing this email from the current owners:

“The LaundroMutt needs new owners…or we will be closing our doors come April 30th, 2010.

We, the owners, have found ourselves too busy with our other business commitments and must sell the LaundroMutt. We would very much like to see this great business continue in the neighborhood and we have loads of ideas to increase revenue and bring additional, exciting services to the customers….but we simply do not have the time or resources to do this.

We are accepting all offers from interested buyers….but are looking to move quickly. It is a great, fun place to work with cool customers (2 and 4 legged). We will gladly share all ideas we have for expanding the business in order to increase revenue and best serve the loyal customers and supportive neighborhood.

Please contact [email protected] or [email protected] if you are interested.”

A reader sang their praises back in Oct. ’09. Laundromutt is located at 1722 Florida Ave., NW.
