Saki is located at 2477 18th St, NW. I noticed the sign (above) announcing the expanded menu and realized that we’ve never discussed them before. I guess I always thought they were more of a lounge than a restaurant. But some yelp reviews say the sushi is really good. Any fans of Saki as a restaurant spot?

Twitter was a buzz this morning with word that Amsterdam Falafel, located at 2425 18th Street NW, was looking to franchise. TopShelfWBJ’s Missy Frederick was first to break the news. Amersterdam Falafel gives the following reasons to open a franchise:

* Flagship in Washington DC has received wide acclaim from the press and customers
* Simple menu reduces operational complexity found in other burger and Tex-Mex competitors
* Low cost of goods from chickpeas as the main ingredient (not expensive chicken or beef, and not subject to the commodity price fluctuations)
* Very affordable menu pricing (particularly beneficial in today’s economic climate)
* Appeal of falafel sandwich is becoming universal, driven by the influx of tourists from Europe and the Middle East, not to mention the many U.S. servicemen and women who became big fans of falafel during their tours
* Offering reflects customers’ growing demand for healthy eating

If you want to open one up, you can learn how here.

We discussed best falafel in the city here.

Back in March we learned that Oya’s Mini Bazaar and African Art located at 2420 18th St NW had moved to 2600 block of Connecticut Ave, NW. A reader recently spotted a DCRA sign for demo under the name of “Bistro 18”. I was able to learn that the space is going to become a “Tryst” type spot (coffee house, sandwiches, etc…) with low sofas and lots of gathering space. The new owners have already purchased a liquor license. There wasn’t a kitchen previously so they will have to build out a whole new kitchen and remodel the inside so it is likely going to take a number of months before they open up. I’ll be sure to update as progress is made.

Do you think 18th St, NW in Adams Morgan has room for another Tryst type spot?

“Dear PoP,

I bike past the site of the crash every day on my commute to work and noticed that there were flowers in front of the Keren restaurant and a sign in memory of Julia Bachleitner who died yesterday. The artsy picture had also been ripped apart. I spoke briefly to the owner who was sitting outside the restaurant. He said he would rebuild with the insurance money and reopen. I could tell that he was saddened to be a part of this situation. He spoke mostly of the women who were hit.”

From MPD:

“The Metropolitan Police Department announces that one of the pedestrians from the auto crash, which occurred in Adams Morgan on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, has died. The victim is identified as 26 year-old Julia Bachleitner of Austria.

On Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at approximately 8:30 pm, a vehicle heading south on 18th Street Northwest, was attempting to turn east on Florida Avenue, Northwest, when it drove onto a traffic island and struck two pedestrians who were standing on the island waiting to cross. The vehicle continued across Florida Avenue, Northwest, and crashed into the front of a restaurant.

The two severely injured pedestrians were taken to local hospitals and the operator of that vehicle was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault and Driving While Intoxicated.”

Last Wed. evening we learned of the horrific accident seriously injuring two SAIS students (last I heard they were still in the hospital) by a drunk driver who also plowed into the Keren Restaurant at 1780 Florida Ave, NW. After the Adams Morgan Day Festival I was walking past the storefront and noticed that it appears somebody put some graffiti art of a car in the window. For some reason the car also says NASA. I probably support some instances of graffiti art more than others but I found this to be really distasteful. I mean the injured students are still in the hospital.

Am I overreacting or does this seem wildly inappropriate?

Obviously much of the attention about Adams Morgan Day has focused on the Dog shooting by MPD. When I stopped by around 3:30pm there was an area blocked off where the shooting occurred but overall if you didn’t know there was an incident it felt like things were back to normal.

I don’t know if it was because of the early gray weather, the incident, multiple festivals scheduled on the same day or what but it certainly felt like there were less people this year. Here’s what Belmont Street looked like this year:

It is quite a contrast from how it looked last year. Nevertheless there were still fun activities like dancing, music, art, food etc. (and of course as could’ve been expected right before the primaries, a ton of campaigning). For those who attended what were your overall experiences?

A few more photos after the jump. (more…)
