“Dear PoP,

I bike past the site of the crash every day on my commute to work and noticed that there were flowers in front of the Keren restaurant and a sign in memory of Julia Bachleitner who died yesterday. The artsy picture had also been ripped apart. I spoke briefly to the owner who was sitting outside the restaurant. He said he would rebuild with the insurance money and reopen. I could tell that he was saddened to be a part of this situation. He spoke mostly of the women who were hit.”

From MPD:

“The Metropolitan Police Department announces that one of the pedestrians from the auto crash, which occurred in Adams Morgan on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, has died. The victim is identified as 26 year-old Julia Bachleitner of Austria.

On Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at approximately 8:30 pm, a vehicle heading south on 18th Street Northwest, was attempting to turn east on Florida Avenue, Northwest, when it drove onto a traffic island and struck two pedestrians who were standing on the island waiting to cross. The vehicle continued across Florida Avenue, Northwest, and crashed into the front of a restaurant.

The two severely injured pedestrians were taken to local hospitals and the operator of that vehicle was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault and Driving While Intoxicated.”

Last Wed. evening we learned of the horrific accident seriously injuring two SAIS students (last I heard they were still in the hospital) by a drunk driver who also plowed into the Keren Restaurant at 1780 Florida Ave, NW. After the Adams Morgan Day Festival I was walking past the storefront and noticed that it appears somebody put some graffiti art of a car in the window. For some reason the car also says NASA. I probably support some instances of graffiti art more than others but I found this to be really distasteful. I mean the injured students are still in the hospital.

Am I overreacting or does this seem wildly inappropriate?

Obviously much of the attention about Adams Morgan Day has focused on the Dog shooting by MPD. When I stopped by around 3:30pm there was an area blocked off where the shooting occurred but overall if you didn’t know there was an incident it felt like things were back to normal.

I don’t know if it was because of the early gray weather, the incident, multiple festivals scheduled on the same day or what but it certainly felt like there were less people this year. Here’s what Belmont Street looked like this year:

It is quite a contrast from how it looked last year. Nevertheless there were still fun activities like dancing, music, art, food etc. (and of course as could’ve been expected right before the primaries, a ton of campaigning). For those who attended what were your overall experiences?

A few more photos after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

Just overheard reporters discussing what happened;

poodle and rottweiler Ed. Note: We’ve since learned it was a pit bull mix get in fight, owners break up dogs, but the owner of the Rottweiler’s Pit Bull mix’s dog bit him in the hands…cops tell owner to let go of dog and when he does they throw it down window recess in front of the brass knob and an officer shoots/kills dog in the window recess. I’m sure people are wondering what happened.”

What a terribly sad unfortunate incident during a normally joyous festival.

More details as they become available.

The Post reports:

“D.C. police shot and killed a dog in the middle of 18th Street in Adams Morgan. The circumstances of the shooting remain unclear, but the dog was shot and killed in the 2300 block of 18th Street around 1:40 p.m., D.C. police said.”

UPDATE from MPD 9:53pm:

“Earlier this afternoon, during the Adams Morgan Day events, an MPD officer encountered a dog in the crowded pedestrian area that got out of the control of it’s handler. The dog attacked another dog and also bit it handler. The officer, after making several attempts to subdue the dog by training tactics, had to finally shoot one time to stop the dog.

Thanks to an alert reader for spotting this Craigslist ad:

Located in the heart of Adams Morgan, 18th Street and Columbia Road NW.

Owner must retire.

Since 1977, El Rincon Espanol Restaurant, 1826 Columbia Road, NW, Washington, DC 20009

What do you think a restaurant like this will go for considering that they already have a liquor license? Were there any fans of the restaurant?

Photo sent by a reader who lives nearby, 10 minutes after accident occurred.

A reader was dining nearby and is saying that the car went into Keren’s Restaurant. @dcfireems says on twitter around 8:50pm:

You can find more info here and a virtual tour here.

I’m digging that fireplace. Do you think $369,900 ($150 condo fee) sounds reasonable for this 1 bed/1 bath condo?

Again Adams Morgan shows it’s resilience with closings and openings. Looks like the old CD Exchange between Caliyogurt and Saki is going to become a restaurant. From peeking in the window they seem real close to opening. I’ll be sure to update with more info and a menu when they open.

Update: Thanks to a commenter for the heads up that this is a crepe place by the same folks who have a spot in Georgetown at 1062 Thomas Jefferson St NW.
