“Dear PoPville,

What do you know about the raid at Capitol Hemp in Adams Morgan last night? I was walking on Adams Mill around 7pm last night when I saw about 15 cops in bulletproof vests. I later saw the cops pulling people out of the store in handcuffs. At one point there was a helicopter flying above with the spotlight on the back of the store. The word on the street was that it was a drug raid of sorts… Do you know anything more about this?”

Capitol Hemp’s Adams Morgan location is located at 1802 Adams Mill Rd, NW. Their Web site says:

“Capitol Hemp is proud offer unique clothing and accessories for women and men made from earth’s greatest natural fiber, industrial hemp.

In addition to clothing, Capitol Hemp offers a wide variety of products made from hemp including soaps, lotions, paper, non-dairy milk, shoes, original works of art, and much much more.

Capitol Hemp also sells orignal works of art by local numerous artists as well as hand blown glass tobacco pipes and vaporizers. If you would like to view photographs of these products, please click here to certify that you are at least 18 years old.”

I have confirmed that an arrest was made but I’m trying to get more details of what actually happened. I’m told that the investigation is ongoing so very little info is available at the moment.

UPDATE From MPD:

“There were search warrants served at 2 area Capitol Hemp Stores

1800 block of Adams Mill Road
4 arrests and drugs and drug paraphernalia recovered

500 block of H St NW
3 arrests and drugs and drug paraphernalia recovered”

Every year we talk about the putrid smell of the Ginkgo tree. And even though every year DDOT sprays the trees some still stink. Well, Adams Morgan has taken the solution to the next level. Since they are expanding the sidewalks for the streetscape improvement – yesterday – they decided to kill two birds with one stone and take down the huge gingko tree in front of Asylum on 18th St, NW. I don’t think many will shed a tear…

Back in May ’11 we learned that a Game Stop would be coming to 1759 Columbia Rd, NW. We judged the building here. Well, they’re now open.

And across the street the Unity Market has been closed for about a month. The park seems strangely quiet when I pass it now. Some readers have been inquiring if they’ll be reopening on 14th St, NW in Columbia Heights. I’m still keeping my eyes peeled for that but haven’t heard anything recently.

Please keep in mind this only scuttlebutt nothing has been confirmed yet. Back in Aug. ’11 Pizza Hut closed at 1769 Columbia Rd, NW. A reader sends intriguing word that a Ledo Pizza could be moving into the space. You can see Ledo’s menu here. Given the recent addition of Mellow Mushroom and all the other pizza options in Adams Morgan – do you think a Ledo Pizza would do well here?

“Dear PoP,

Not a very large branch, but the height from which it fell made it lethal.

The victim’s name hasn’t been released, but he’s a top-notch athlete and was out for a morning run. Evidently he was passing under this elm tree just as the branch gave way.

WUSA9 reports:

“It happened at around 6:20 a.m. at on the 3200 block of Adams Mill Road, in NW, DC.”

Back in May ’10 we learned that Leftbank (formerly Cities) would become an Eastern European restaurant called Slaviya at 2424 18th St., NW in Adams Morgan. The Adams Morgan Bid now tells us:

“A Taste of New Orleans will be at 2424 18th Street, NW (where Slaviya is currently). They hope to be open by October 19th.”

I briefly spoke with the owner who said they should be open by this weekend. I’m already hearing from some who’ve got some preview tastes that the the crawfish etouffee is excellent. I’ll post the menu when it becomes available.

My only concern/question is – will they be able to compete with the great New Orleans Cafe down the block at 2412 18th St, NW.

Back in Jan. ’11 we learned that mellow mushroom pizzeria would be coming to the old 18th and Red space at 2436 18th St, NW in Adams Morgan. I’ve been getting requests for updates ever since – and I’m happy to say that today is the day!

More great news – the owners have been kind enough to give one PoP reader a $100 gift certificate. As with all contests like this just let us know why you want to win in the comments. I’ll pick a winner Friday.

In the meantime – following are a few shots of the inside (though finishing touches were ongoing when I took these shots.) But I will tell you- the roof deck has some pretty sweet views.

Some photos of the inside after the jump. (more…)

Junior Marvin (left) headlines Jamaican Joe’s Grand Opening Festivities

Well this is very cool. Thanks to a reader for sending the shot. Last we learned that Bistro 18 was becoming a Jamaican Joe’s at 2420 18th Street NW in Adams Morgan. Sat. night they had some grand opening festivities and headlining was Junior Marvin formerly of the Wailers. The man used to play with Bob Marley.
