Back in mid-Sept. it was announced that Citibank would be coming to the old Blockbuster space at 1751 Columbia Rd, NW. Turns out the lease negotiations fell through.
Maybe a Jos A Bank would be interested…?
Mellow Mushroom is one of the most eagerly anticipated new restaurants I’ve ever posted about. So now that they’ve been open a couple of months – what do you think of the pizza? For those who’ve been to other locations – how does this one compare? For folks that have never been before did it meet your expectations?
Back in early October, Bistro 18 became a Jamaican Jerk Chicken spot (with the dubious slogan, “Wanna Get Jerked”) called Jamaican Joe’s at 2420 18th Street NW. Last weekend the signage was removed revealing the old Bistro 18 signs. I’m not sure if Bistro 18 will actually reopen or someone else will move in but I’ll keep my eyes on the space.
It seems 18th Street is having a bit of an identity crisis with next door neighbor Slaviya recently becoming ‘A Taste of New Orleans’ before returning to Slaviya again. Not to mention the space that is now McNasty’s…for now.

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) has confirmed that the Kalorama post office (2300 18th St.), located in Ward 1, has been taken off the United States Postal Service (USPS) Expanded Access Study List and is no longer being considered for closure.
Last week, Norton announced that seven of the 19 D.C. post offices on the list for possible closure had been removed, and USPS announced this week that it would delay closing or consolidating any post offices until May 2012.

At a Ward 1 community meeting convened by USPS and myself, DC Postmaster Gerald Roane acknowledged some 2500 messages he had received to preserve both 14th/Wallach and Kalorama/Adams Morgan post offices.
Postmaster Roane then announced that Kalorama would be removed from the list of post offices “under study” and that it would not be considered for closing. Further good news, USPS is committed to finding a new U Street area location for the 14th St P.O. to replace the current location which is set for redevelopment. Until the end of the lease in February 2012, the Post Office will remain open. Hopefully by then we will have at least a temporary location in the U Street neighborhood.

Back in August ’11 we pre-Preview of Mintwood Place coming to 1813 Columbia Rd, NW below Perry’s in Adams Morgan. I stopped by this weekend to see how it was progressing. I was lucky enough to run into the owner, Saied Ayoubi Azali, who invited me inside to take a few photos. There are still some finishing touches ongoing but they are fairly confident that they’ll be open by the end of the month.
I don’t think the photos do it justice because I was trying to avoid the construction but the reclaimed materials were looking awesome:

This is def. one of my top three places I can’t wait to open (the other two are Chez Billy’s in Petworth and the Tryst/Diner spot coming to Columbia Heights.)
