Bistro 18 was located at 2420 18th Street NW. We judged them to mixed reviews back in May ’11.

Some may recognize the name Jamaican Joe’s, as they recently opened another location at 928 U St, NW. Not to be juvenile but this is the restaurant with the interesting tagline – Wanna get jerked? (Their Website URL under construction is www.igotjerked.com)

Anyone try the chicken yet?

“All business owners and property owners on 18th Street who are interested in having a sidewalk cafe after the 18th Street Streetscape construction has concluded or expanding your current sidewalk cafe should attend tonight’s ANC1C meeting.

The meeting will begin at 7 PM TONIGHT October 5th at Mary’s Center (the pink building) at 2355 Ontario Rd., NW.

At last night’s PZT Committee (Planning, Zoning and Transportation) meeting of ANC1C, the committee voted to support the following change to DCMR 24-311; 204 and 316:

“All rental of public space, whether for a café or other commercial use, must have an adjacent clear and unobstructed passageway not less than 12 feet in width at all points. Sidewalk cafes located at street intersections shall provide corner clearance of 12 feet to the corner. No sidewalk cafes shall be within 15 feet of a bus stop, a bus shelter or a Metrorail station entrance (24-311.6 and 24-311.7.7). The Public Space Committee has the authority to approve an adjacent passageway as narrow as 8 feet.”

How this is different from current law:

The existing city-wide law provides for 10 feet in width at all points
and an exception as narrow as 6 feet.

To be clear, ANC1C is proposing that there be 12 feet rather than 10 feet from the edge of the railing of the café (or other perimeter) to the curb. Thus the ANC’s proposal would create a greater distance from the curb to the edge of a sidewalk cafe and reduce available cafe space.

The ANC has not justified why they think that 18th Street should have different sidewalk cafe measurements than the rest of the city. Please attend tonight’s meeting and voice your opinion if this issue is important to you and your business or tenants.”

Were you aware of this deal in Adams Morgan? I’ve lived there for 3.5 years and never heard of it until I stumbled upon it on the dc.gov website today. I am wondering does the deal mean you can order off of anything on the menu or are there only selected items? Does the “drink” part mean like vodka drink? Was wondering if you or anyone in PoPville has heard and/or tried it and how it works. Here is the link for it on the dc gov website.”

Huh, this is the first I’m hearing of it as well. Has anyone tried it?

I had know idea DC.gov advertised stuff like this:

Apparently the store closed July 30th at 1828 18th St, NW. But for fans – it looks like you can still order on line. Ansonia Wines opened up back in Nov. ’09. It’s a pretty tough location since the entrance is not very obvious downstairs in the basement.

I’m not sure how I missed the closing of the store but in other news – apparently the Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl.

A tipster sends word that the Adams Morgan Unity Market will be closing tomorrow (Unity Park is located at Columbia/Champlain/Euclid just east of 18th St, NW.) For those not familiar with the market you can read about it here.

Back in July ’11 DCist noted:

“Vendors have agreed to forgo operations on Saturday and instead open only on Thursday, Friday and Sunday as city officials look for a more permanent place to locate them.”

And back in Sept. ’10 City Paper wrote:

“Here’s the problem: Neighboring restaurants that sell similar food say the city-sanctioned market has stolen their lunch traffic on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday—the busiest days of the week.”

I’m hearing that their last day is tomorrow because apparently the DC Dept of Latino Affairs has not reapproved the permit for the market to operate.

So for the Friday Question of the Day – do you think the market should be able to continue to operate in the park? If not, do you think they should be allowed to open up at the triangle park at 14th and Oak St, NW in Columbia Heights? Elsewhere? Any other potential compromises?
