635 New York Ave, NW

From District Crossfit:

“As many of you have probably heard by now, thanks to the Washingtonian, we are very happy to announce that District CrossFit will be opening a new location in the Southwest Waterfront. The new gym will be located on 1525 Half Street SW in eyeshot of the National’s Ballpark.

The new space will be 10,000 square feet. To put that in perspective, our New York Ave. location is just shy of 3,500 square feet.

Barring any major setbacks, we plan on opening the doors on September 1st of this year.”

“Unfortunately we also have some sad news:

Potentially as soon as November 1st, 2012; we will be forced to close our doors at 635 New York Ave. While planning a new space (even back while we were at 624 NY Ave) we have always had every intention of keeping two locations up and running; Andrew even moved to the City Vista apartments 3 weeks ago in anticipation of DCF being in the Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood for a long time. However, a few days ago we received notice from our landlord that they intend to re-develop this block with a large office building. We are hoping to negotiate our way into a few more months at 635 but unfortunately our time here is more limited than we want. Seeing as DCF was born on NY Ave this news is absolutely heartbreaking to us. We’ve tried (and continue to try) to fight for every extra day we can.”

It’s a good week for cycling studio news. The Art of SpYn is coming to 950 F St, NW. From an email:

Dear PoPville,

I’m a WSC emmber, strapped to my contractual agreement to the club for fear of being punished with severence fees. On January 3rd I was perusing my bank account and noticed that WSC debited my account for more money than my regular monthly dues. Assuming it was a mistake, I called the club only to be told that it is the annual “rate guarantee fee”. My response “What?!?!” Apparently, to keep your rate at the “low” price that you received when you signed up, they require clients to pay an annual fee. It kind of defeats the purpose of the initial sign up fee and the monthly dues. Who’s ever heard of paying more than your contractual agreement to maintain the terms of your contractual agreement. I asked to speak to someone in corporate. They started to put up the “iron curtain” defense. After literally a week of trying I got impatient, went on LinkedIn, found the CEO’s name, and then figured out the recipe to the corporate email addresses. I emailed him directly about my concerns which are:

1. What is this crazy fee?
2. For all of the money you get from us in dues, it would be nice if your membership consultants spent 30 seconds explaining the fee – can you make that happen?
3. You could AT LEAST have communicated that we should be expecting this fee. Even a sign in the doorway would be nice. An email would’ve been better. You have ALL of my information short of my DNA coding.

Instead of replying back, he had the Director of Administrative services email me and offer to have a club manager get in touch. I explained – again – that the managers have no power over policy and directed me to her to get answers. She never replied, and today I got a call from a regional manager. I expect no success in my mission for answers and demands for better communication from the ivory tower where their CEO looks down on all of us wee members paying out $80/month to sweat on their treadmills, but I want to empower other folks irritated by this with the CEO’s name and email address so they can share their thoughts with him, and also the name and number for reaching the regional manager. I know they got hundreds of calls around the date of the “rate guarantee fee” debit, it would be great if all of those calls went to the corporate office instead of to the managers who really have no power in the situation.

“Dear PoP,

Last week, on the evening of Wednesday, January 20th, a thief broke into three locked lockers in the men’s locker room at the Columbia Heights Washington Sports Club (WSC) location sometime around 7:30. As you know, it was a PoP reader who alerted us to the same type of theft in July. I had my wallet and suit pants stolen and I no longer assume that anything I leave in a locked locker at that location is safe. It looked like a bolt cutter or crowbar was used to pry my lock off.

To add insult to injury, the entire situation was mishandled by staff from the very beginning. The acting manager on duty that night said he would file a police report on behalf of the victims. That turned out not to be true. Initially my calls were not returned and it was only when I began to complain about how poorly I was being treated as a customer that I had my concerns addressed. I was initially offered three free personal training sessions for my trouble, which I found insulting given that the value of my stolen goods was at least $520, and that I had a lock on my locker. They then offered me one free month of membership and reminded me that they are not liable for damaged or stolen property under any circumstances. Whoops, I guess I should have read the fine print when I signed the membership contract.

Besides informing the gym that I am canceling my membership, there is nothing more I can do in this situation. I did, however, want to mention this incident so all your readers are aware that security is still poor at the WSC Columbia Heights location. I’ve heard from two separate sources that there are 8,000 members at this particular gym. I guess with that much revenue pouring in the loss of one member is just minor collateral damage in the effort to get more and more members without adequately protecting existing members. I’ve gone back a number of times since the theft and see no change in security procedures. For example, many times there is no attendant in the locker room.

It’s disappointing that the management of the club is so poor because the location is convenient, but I cannot in good conscience continue placing my trust in WSC to improve security or cap their membership to better manage their club. I just wish I could have had the chance to stop this criminal like the reader who confronted the thief back in July. From now on, I will go to the gym closer to my workplace and exercise there.”

There was some discussion last week about the construction going on at 13th and U Streets, NW. I have confirmed one rumor with Kim Weeks the founder of Boundless Yoga. She writes:

“We plan to move in during the summer, and we’re expanding from our spot on the 1500 block of U Street to 2500 SF there at 13th/U, with two bright, sunny studios plus a space for Yoga Therapy and private yoga. We’ll be offering public yoga, private yoga, yoga training, Yoga Therapy, and energy healing!”

Now we just have to wait to see who takes over the first floor.

Consider the following purely scuttlebutt, not sure if others have heard the same, but I thought it was worth sharing. I was at an event where I heard that Results, located at 1612 U St NW, will be moving in 2011. The person who knew the details said that Results would be replaced by a very high-end gym possibly owned by a Salon. I’m just curious if anyone else has heard this rumor?

For a while this Results was going to move into the new View 14 building at 14th and Florida but that is no longer in the works.
