I don’t really care for the ‘Onion’ graffiti but the planted cactus is beyond cool. It’s from 1st St, NW in Bloomingdale.

“Dear PoP,
In addition to proving DC residents green collar job training, DC Greenworks also designs and installs residential and commercial green roofs in the area. I’m including a few pictures of the beautiful mixed use green roof DC Greenworks installed this June on my garage off Sherman Ave. in Columbia Heights.

The 600 square foot installation features a flagstone seating area (perfect for coffee and mojitos), 300 square feet of perennial beds, an herb garden, extensive sedum ground cover, and a LOT of happy wildlife. This once unused and ugly garage roof is now actively employed as our back yard, while at the same time reducing run off by nearly 400 gallons in a typical 1″ rain storm. An attractive incentive through the DDOE’s RiverSmart Rooftops program really helped get this project off the ground.
I couldn’t have asked for better expertise and assistance from DC Greenworks and I will be out tonight supporting them at this benefit. Any PoP’er that dreams of more green space should look into a green roof!”

What better way to cook with an unlimited supply of free basil than participating at the Marion Street Garden Basil Bonanza?
“ City Blossoms, in conjunction with the Runcible Spoon, is hosting a basil-themed potluck and cook-off. Drop by the garden (on Marion St. between P & Q Streets, NW) and pick up any amount of basil you need on Monday, August 23. Then, go home, cook your thing (it can be a dessert, main dish, appetizer, whatever), and bring it back on Wednesday, August 25.
1. Come Monday (August 23) from 4pm to 7pm or Wednesday (August 25) from 4pm to 6:30 to pick basil (thai, genovese, lemon, and box).
2. Prep basil in a tasty way (beverage, appetizer, main dish, dessert, whatever!) for 5 or more people and bring the dish to share on Wednesday, August 25th from 6:30-8:30pm.
3. Eat lots of whatever other people bring.
4. Enjoy the loveliness of Marion Street Garden and meet other happy basil fanatics.
There will be awards for the best dishes, so cook with your best effort. Good luck!”

“Dear PoP,
I was wondering if anybody around here has seen clusters of this tiny red ant-looking like bugs, and if they know what they are? Should they be killed?”
Anyone know if these are harmful to your home and/or garden?
On a side note, I think the photos are awesome…

The occupants of 1737 Williard St, NW sent in this great photo. It is a scene that I admire every year (I’ve featured them before in years past!). One resident calls it, “the most gorgeous and verdant, 3-story, summer, alley abondanza” and gives credit to fellow residents Chuck and Alex. Amazing job!

“I’d like to submit this backyard oasis/koi pond on 11th St. in Shaw. There is plenty of mint in the garden for mojito’s… but my 5-year-old coffee plant has yet to produce a bean to roast and grind.”
Beautiful! If you have a great garden, best spot for a morning cup of coffee or simply a beautiful tomato, send a photo to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com

This sidewalk in the Palisades stopped me dead in my tracks. The photo really doesn’t do it justice. My first time in the Palisades. Def. scouted some future houses of the day. And yes, as a walker, I still prefer sidewalks. Though you can kinda see some flowers behind the leaves here:

“Dear PoP,
Whenever I walk into my garden and stare at my ginormous tomato plants (and eggplants, and cucumbers, etc) I can’t help but hear them say “FEED ME SEYMOUR!”
For your tomato envying pleasure.”
Nicely done! This city garden rivals the country one selected as garden of the day.

“My garden is outside the city but it’s planted in straw bales, which can very easily be done on a balcony or in a rowhouse yard. Put some sheet plastic under the bales, cover in compost, let them rot for a few weeks, and plant. When you’re done you can pretty easily compost up all the straw.
I forgot to pick a zucchini for a day or so:

Farm haul from the other day:

it’s so easy to urbanize the concept.”
After the jump check out a phenomenal chicken and an odd bonus garden. (more…)

I saw this Petworth couple planting this garden a couple of months ago. They told me to come back and I wouldn’t be sorry. Well played. Well played.
