“We’ve had some amazing harvests already in the North Columbia Heights Green, alley behind El Chucho/Red Rocks. This weeks harvest includes: kale, collards, chard, lettuce, tomatoes, beets, radishes, green beans, garlic, peppers, eggplant, carrots and herbs! We are owned by Washington Parks and People and have open community work hours every Saturday at 10am! All are welcome to learn about urban farming and meet your neighbors!”

“I succession planted a number of cucumbers so that they would hopefully not all ripen at once. But today i picked both of these! One for a friend, and one for me. I live in van ness, and grow everything in a container. One is a bush crop, the other has at a much longer vine. I use solar powered led lights to trellis things.

Regret not taking a photo of these giants side by side. Next time!!!”

It’s time for the return of one of my favorite features – youre great garden hauls!! Be they tomatoes, okra, apples, blackberries, melons, lettuce – whatever you grow – if you get a great haul send a photo and a description to [email protected] and please include what neighborhood you grew them in. Volume One comes courtesy of Lisa who sends from Arlington:

Wangari Gardens is located on a 2.7 acre space, bordered by Irving St. NW, Kenyon St. NW, and Park Pl. NW.

“Wangari Gardens , a nonprofit community garden located at Park Pl and Kenyon St NW in the Park View neighborhood of NW Washington DC, has a few private raised beds available at the garden. Neighbors are invited to apply now as plots are offered on a first come first served basis, with priority given to long term neighborhood residents, those with disabilities, and low income individuals. More details available at the link below:

The garden plots are approximately 8×3′ raised beds filled with high quality soil, perfect for growing tomatoes, peppers, or any other vegetable you like!
