This award-winning documentary chronicles the complex and emotional story of the destruction of Los Angeles’ South Central Farm. Created from the ashes of the L.A. riots in 1992, the South Central Farm was the largest urban farm in the United States until its destruction in 2006. “The Garden” follows the farmers as they organize and launch an impassioned public battle to save the farm. The film documents the farmers’ struggle against the city’s backroom deals, and exposes the underlying issues of money, power, poverty and racial discord. The film explores the fault lines in American society, raising crucial and challenging questions about liberty, equality, and justice for the poorest and most vulnerable among us.

It’s the time of year when we Feds get to make our charitable donations through the Combined Federal Campaign. I always want to include a couple of local organizations but I never really know which ones are most worthwhile. Maybe you could ask your readers which DC neighborhood charities they contribute to, and which (if any) they tend to avoid?”

This is a good question. Back in February, I unsuccessfully tried to match funds for a local charity. Here were the finalists. Well only one person donated and a number of folks told me that the winner, First Time Computers, was completely unresponsive. So let’s try this again. Anyone have a favorite local charity or know of ones that should be avoided?

We’ll have prizes for champion thumb-wrestlers, presidential stand-ins ready to deliver the speeches of those who prefer to save their voices to cheer on thumb-wrestlers, and gads of information about our programming and the kids we’ve worked with and how to get involved. Get to the goal is a commitment by District Sports to help love.futbol build a field for youth in Guatemala by the end of 2009.

The Senior Citizens Club of 1200 Block Shepherd Street is collecting food for Thanksgiving boxes.  They are almost done but still need a few items.  Donations should be dropped off at 1229 Shepherd Street, NW to Ms. Shirley NO LATER THAN October 23, 2008.
Items they still need:

-30 Bags of Flour

-Cranberry Sauce

-Stuffing

-12 Bags of Sugar

-Dry Beans (any kind)

-Onions

-White Potatoes

Pedro Chavez is looking for the community’s support in his opening of Kikos, a restaurant that would reside on Quincy and Spring Road, East of 14th Street.  The place would be a rotisserie chicken restaurant that would seat about 50 and would also have delivery and pickup.  He said the food would also be on the healthy side and the establishment would be a family oriented one.  He hopes to open in December.  He needs your support.  More on Church parking, CVS, “Stinky” Safeway and 16th Street Heights Parks after the jump. “I wonder if you would be willing to post some information about this great fundraising auction for Street Sense that just happens to be the same night as the VP debate. Tons of folks are planning to watch the debates, I know, but the auction starts at 7, so people could swing by on their way to watching the debate and place a few bids. We’ll let them know if their bids carry the day. It is a great cause, and the support would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve been telling friends that if they attend and watch the debate later, they can consider their DVR fees to be a benevolent expense.

The event is in our neighborhood at the Josephine Butler Park Center, just across from Meridian Hill / Malcolm X Park.”

Sadly/happily I’ll be attending the Jenny Lewis concert at the 6th and I Synagogue but if you are looking for a spot to watch the VP debate – in addition to Red Derby and Red Rocks you can also catch it at Haydee’s in Mt.
