“Dear PoPville,
The Cesar Chavez Public Charter School for Public Policy will be holding a fundraising garage sale this Saturday, May 31 from 10am-12pm at 770 Kenyon St NW. All proceeds will be donated to a family in our community whose home was destroyed in a fire.
We have kids games, men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, a twin bed, sports equipment and more.
We are also accepting donations of items or money. If people are doing some spring cleaning and are interested in getting ride of lightly used, garage sale quality items, you can drop them off at the school any time between now and Saturday.”

“The American Institute of Wine and Food (AIWF) and The Source by Wolfgang Puck are pleased to host the ninth annual crab cake competition. An annual tradition designed to raise funds for culinary internships, scholarships and educational programs, the contest will pit eight of the area’s top chefs against one another in a crab cake showdown utilizing Department-verified Maryland blue crab. This year’s participating chefs include:

Now we need your help. Last year, our farmers market matching funds program provided over $13,000 to make it easier for low-income families to eat healthy and stretch their food budgets. It’s simple. If a customer spends $5 dollars on fruits and vegetables at the market using Federal nutrition benefits like food stamps, we provide an additional $5.
$5 in food stamps = $10 in healthy fruits and vegetables
$10 in food stamps = $20 in healthy fruits and vegetables
The program reached more than 1,200 families in the last two years alone. But we need your help to make sure these families can count on us again this year.
We need to raise $10,000 by May 21st to ensure that low income families can access healthy, affordable food for the entire 2014 market season.

To help Marc with the ensuing medical bills and time off work, Smoke and Barrel will be offering a special menu downstairs (The Bottom of the Barrel) with 100% of the proceeds going to Marc’s recovery.
Pints of Flying Dog Doggiestyle Pale Ale and Lost Rhino Meridian Kolsch will be offered for $5 along with classic picnic-style burgers, hot dogs, and fries.

“The Center City Public Charter School Brightwood Campus will be attending their 2nd annual camping trip this Spring. 60 middle school students will arrive at Echo Hill camp grounds where they will spend the night participating in the residential program. Students in Echo Hill’s residential programs become fully immersed in the outdoor environment. These residential programs are designed to complement classroom learning by providing unique opportunities for academic and social growth. Guided by Echo Hill teachers, students learn and interact with peers and teachers in a new and exciting environment.
We are asking that you help us get there!

“Most of the student have never been exposed to the wonders of nature because they live in the city. Nearly every student is on free and reduced lunch and would not be able to pay for this trip on their own so we try to make it a free opportunity for all. Students take science classes at the Echo Hill camp ground, explore nature though guided hikes and participate in team-building and collaborative activities throughout the two days.”
