“Dear PoPville,

I am a single mother in Ward 1 (Georgia Ave) who has a daughter that is beating the odds. Morgan is a student at DCI who has been studying Mandarin for 7 years. Over the last 4 years Morgan has been dancing at Dance institute of Washington. She’s had the opportunity to dance for the Dance Theater of Harlem. Drexel University in Philadelphia, and recently she auditioned and was accepted into the prestigious Rock School of Dance in Philadelphia. She is a ballerina who dreams of studying Psychology and dance in college so she can become a therapist who incorporates dancing as a form of healing. Out of the $5,800 which is for tuition, room and board we have been able to raise almost all of the money except for $583.00. Any donations that are made are tax deductible, and I can provide the information when people make donations.”

“Dear PoPville,

A woman in my building (The Argonne, 1629 Columbia Rd NW), Ginger, lost everything this weekend when her sweet bulldog, Chacha, managed to trip a burner on her stove while trying to get trash on the counter. Chacha died in the fire, and all of Gingers stuff is completely gone. I didn’t know Ginger well, but almost everyone in our building knew her puppy since she would literally stop walking when she saw someone in our lobby and wait until they petted her.

I can’t imagine losing all your stuff AND your pet. To help her, some friends of hers have set up a go fund me page here.”

For those who got shut out of Hamilton tickets and or have a soft spot for pets:

“Dear PoPville,

I have two tickets, both in the orchestra section, for the Saturday, September 8th, 1:30 PM show.  The total face value of these tickets (including KC service charge) is $408.12.  For a chance to win these tickets, please donate to my fundraiser – http://support.humanerescuealliance.org/goto/alfred2018 – by Tuesday, April 10, 2018 ($25/entry; five entries for $100 – please mention “Hamilton raffle” in the comments on the donation page). The winner will be announced on April 11, 2018.  The more you donate, the more chances to win… and if you don’t win, you’ve helped many animals in need – it really is a win-win situation!”

From N Street Village:

“On International Women’s Day, we launched a new partnership with Lyft, serving as the first local DC Round Up & Donate partner. For 6 months, DC riders have the opportunity to round up their ride to the nearest dollar, with that change going directly to N Street Village. We’re really excited with the opt in rates we’ve seen so far, but know that the power of this program will come from connecting with as many people as we possibly can. Once you opt in, you’re all set– every ride will round up, and that change that you don’t even notice goes to serving your homeless neighbors.”

Andre Junior and family via gofundme

“Dear PoPville,

Last week you posted the story regarding the Thursday afternoon shooting on Park Road that resulted in the murder of my friend Andre Junior. In the past week, a lot of people have asked how they could help so a group of his college friends banded together to start a campaign to raise money for his young daughter’s future education. Dre’s widow did not ask for help, but we all felt compelled to do something to help our fallen friend.”

The gofundme says:

“Andre Junior (affectionately known as Dre) was lost to us on March 15th, 2018. He was 43 years old. He leaves behind his beautiful wife and best friend, Ericka, and his loving daughter, Ava Junior. (more…)

Courtesy the family of Eugene THUNDER Hughes

On Wednesday we learned that “Midtown Youth Academy lost its beloved curator and father this past weekend, Eugene THUNDER Hughes“. A fundraiser has been launched for funeral expenses:

Eugene Hughes (Gene) and his twelve brothers and sisters were raised by their mother and grandmother in inner-city Washington, D.C., where Gene quickly learned the basics of survival on the streets. Growing up, Gene found himself constantly in trouble; when a mentor, “Sonny Boy West,” convinced him to channel that youthful energy into boxing. Gene went on to become the Diamond Belt Champion (before African Americans were allowed to participate in the Golden Gloves) in 1951, 1952, and 1953. In 1954, Gene deservingly won the Golden Gloves Championships. After his boxing career, Gene became a successful trainer, but he never forgot his community, always combining boxing with youth mentoring and drug counseling. (more…)
