So maybe this is just in Chinatown, but I’m terrified of the GreenPeace solicitors. I certainly support those who wish to combat global warming but the fine folks from GreenPeace are far more aggressive than any panhandlers I’ve ever encountered. In Chinatown they work in twos and basically block the sidewalk and follow you for about 20 feet or so until finally in a fit of aggravation I say, “I voted for George Bush, God Damn it!”. I voted for Gore and Kerry just for the record. But, hell, these people are insane. I just want my PotBelly’s sandwich man. That’s all, let me through. A friend of mine just told me in the age of the internet that soliciting on the street is pretty ridiculous. And I agree. So the Friday question of the day is: Do you think the fine folks from GreenPeace are too aggressive in their soliciting campaign on the streets of DC?

Ok, a number of people have recently emailed me about the strip club The House on Georgia Ave. near Otis and Newton.  There is a lot of concern about the new charter school opening up right near by the strip club.   In addition people who are thinking of moving nearby are very concerned about living near a strip club.  So the first question is:  Is there any chance that the strip club will be closed due to the charter school opening?  Secondly, how much of a factor is it in moving to one of the nearby streets?  I had a buddy of mine who lived on Newton about a half a block away and neither he nor his wife encountered any drunk/rowdy patrons.  So, basically, is The House pretty self contained or is it a menace to the neighborhood?

This a very timely question.  So my house is heated by radiators and it is freaking awesome.  There is very little nicer than putting your clothes on the radiator and then having nice warm clothes to put on after a shower.  At any rate I don’t have many air conditioners. And of course DC summers can be brutal.  So what are your thoughts on Central Air?  Is it worth it to lose your radiators for central air?

Hopefully it is not too late but a reader writes:  “Those of us who get the Washington Post delivered to our door probably got an envelope that said “If you would like to remember your carrier during the holidays, please use this envelope”.  I’m sending a $25 check to my delivery person, since my paper has been in place, on time, every morning of the week for the past year, but just wondering what other folks do/think on this subject.”

So how much do you tip the newspaper delivery person?  Who else do you tip?

Today’s question of the day was submitted by Reuben.  He asks:  “dc gets its own quarter (like the other, real states)… which image or person examplifies dc? barry? a double parked car? chili dog? a spent casing from a tech 9?  an empty styrofoam container from a corner carryout?”  While a bit cynical I think it is an interesting question.  What do you guys think would best represent DC on the back of a quarter?

I think I may have asked this in the past but I can’t remember. So, do you prefer white Christmas lights, colorful Christmas lights, or one solid color, like blue, Christmas lights?

Ed note: My camera, for some odd reason, probably because it was free, only works at night on odd days of the week, so if you have some Christmas lights you’d like featured, shoot me an email at princeofpetworth at gmail dot com. Safe travels to those on the road!

When I first moved into my house I was most excited about the stairs. After living in an apartment for so many years, I couldn’t believe that I actually had my own stairs. I remember just running up and down the stairs like a little kid. Actually, I still do it but then my knees start hurting. Anyway, for the Friday question of the day: What were you most excited about when you moved into your own home/rowhouse/condo? Or if you are still looking/planning what is the one feature you would most like in a home?

Is the proposed development of the Old Soldier’s Home going to completely change the character of Petworth as we know it? Petworth News has a good graphic on the proposed development. I too wish there would be more park land designated. But is all the development going to be bad? What if they bring another Dunkin Donuts with them? Or maybe it will help attract a movie theater. I’ve always thought Columbia Heights would be perfect for a movie theater, a nice small one that shows independent films. Sorry I was just dreaming for a second. So, what are your thoughts on the proposed development in the Old Soldier’s Home now that it is coming closer to reality?

I know we’ve sort of covered this before but I’m wondering what the threshold is for deciding on installing bars on your windows? (Ed. note: I’m not talking about basement window bars I’m talking about first floor window bars and God forbid second floor window bars.) I figure if all the houses on the block have bars then you should probably get bars too? But what if only a few houses have bars, then do you get them also? I mean many of the homes in Dupont Circle used to have bars but they don’t have them anymore? So what is the threshold for taking the bars off? You get what I’m saying right?

Given the Thanksgiving Holiday there will be no new posts on Thursday or Friday. So let me wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.

Without further ado, the question of the day is: How important is the condition of the house adjacent to yours before you decide to purchase or rent your own home? Does it matter? If your house is renovated or otherwise cool in the gang, does the condition of your immediate neighbor’s house matter? For that matter, if there is a “sketchy” house on your block does that affect your decision to purchase or rent?
