On the cusp of a big holiday weekend allow me to ask a completely random question: Do people still have Dentist/Doctor’s offices in their homes? I passed this sign and it got me thinking – when I was a kid I went to some in homes but I wonder if they still exist. This one from Capitol Hill looked like it could be current. If it’s not common when did it switch from homes to office buildings? And when did it switch? Did it switch because office space became cheaper or because doctors/dentists wanted to reclaim their homes?

We spend a lot of time talking about and debating beer. This week I’ve been getting a lot of emails about the arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau. And it got me thinking that we don’t talk too often about wine. I took a wine class in college (2 hour lecture, 1 hour tasting) greatest class ever. Ed. Note: Miami University of Ohio represent. Sadly, I haven’t retained too much info beyond the fact that most corks come from Portugal. Anyway, from time to time I enjoy a nice glass of wine but whenever I go into a store to buy a bottle I stare at the bottles slack jawed and have no idea what to buy.

So for a fun Friday question of the day – what’s your favorite wine? And I guess we can break it up into two parts – what’s your favorite expensive and what’s your favorite less expensive go to wine? Ah, I guess for those who really like their wine – favorite reds and whites?

There has been a lively debate this week on the neighborhood listservs talking about whether or not a Medical MariJuana Dispensary should open up in their neighborhoods. I’ll be honest – while I wouldn’t be thrilled if a methodone clinic opened up in my neighborhood, and perhaps it’s a bit hypocritical, I really have no problem with a medical marijuana dispensary. I don’t smoke marijuana (though of course I tried it in college) but I just don’t think it will attract a negative element. In fact my suspicion is that we won’t even realize it is there. Now, I’m gonna be honest again – I’m really just guessing and have no idea what impact (if any) it would have on my community. Thus this week’s FQotD.

So the Friday question of the day is not whether you support medical marijuana in general, rather, would you object to or support a dispensary in your neighborhood? Why?

“Dear PoPville,

I keep on seeing black garlic all over menus in the area, most recently being brunch at Poste this weekend. I love it but I don’t love paying for expensive meals or shipping to order the black garlic from online stores. Any suggestions from PoPville for a good place to get black garlic?

Also, I’m from Catonsville where there is an amazing H Mart and I am dying for something similar around here. Is there anything metro-accessible that is comparable? Thanks!”

Back in Aug. ’10 I had heard some scuttlebutt that an H Mart (grocery store) could be coming to the old Secret Safeway on 19th St, NW in Dupont. Sadly, that doesn’t seem to be the case. But the readers question above got me thinking about other coveted retail that we don’t have yet in DC. It seems like there are so many big new developments coming down the pike that we might be able to attract some.

Some of the places I’ve heard spoken about that we don’t have include: H Mart, Eataly, Uniqlo – who else?

So for the Friday Question of the Day – What retail do you want to see in DC that we don’t have yet?

And of course – where can you find reasonably priced black garlic? Would the Hana Japanese Market have it at the corner of 17th and U St, NW?

Along the lines of the famous Yogi Berra quote: “Nobody goes there anymore it’s too crowded” – I was talking to a friend about Estadio (1520 14th Street, NW in Logan) and he said none of his friends go there because it’s too crowded and they don’t take reservations. So I guess first I should ask – are you noticing many new restaurants that also don’t take reservations? What other popular restaurants don’t take reservations? Do you like the idea of no reservations or do you think restaurants should take them?

I’m hearing rumors that Urban Outfitters is considering opening up a store in the U Street neighborhood. They currently have locations in Georgetown and Penn Quarter. So this week’s Friday Question of the Day is a simple one: Do you think Urban Outfitters would be a good fit for the U Street neighborhood? Personally I think they’d do very well on U Street.

So I can’t believe these rates are still dropping – 30 year fixed rates have even fallen below 4%! Sorry I didn’t mean to sound like a commercial right there but since you’ve convinced me to get a flu shot, I’m wondering what you think about these insanely low interest rates? If you have a 30 year fixed rate at 5.6% would you definitely refinance? If you’re on the fence about buying a place would/should this make you expedite your decision?

So for the Friday Question of the Day – are interest rates so low that you’d be crazy not to refinance (or buy if you were thinking about buying)?

A tipster sends word that the Adams Morgan Unity Market will be closing tomorrow (Unity Park is located at Columbia/Champlain/Euclid just east of 18th St, NW.) For those not familiar with the market you can read about it here.

Back in July ’11 DCist noted:

“Vendors have agreed to forgo operations on Saturday and instead open only on Thursday, Friday and Sunday as city officials look for a more permanent place to locate them.”

And back in Sept. ’10 City Paper wrote:

“Here’s the problem: Neighboring restaurants that sell similar food say the city-sanctioned market has stolen their lunch traffic on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday—the busiest days of the week.”

I’m hearing that their last day is tomorrow because apparently the DC Dept of Latino Affairs has not reapproved the permit for the market to operate.

So for the Friday Question of the Day – do you think the market should be able to continue to operate in the park? If not, do you think they should be allowed to open up at the triangle park at 14th and Oak St, NW in Columbia Heights? Elsewhere? Any other potential compromises?

A reader writes: “Look what opened on GA Ave in near LGL… Sneaker store!”

CityBeats just opened up on Saturday at 3551 Georgia Ave, NW (at the corner of Georgia and Otis St, NW.)  I stopped in on Thursday and the owner was super nice.  Like the reader who sent in the tip – I was genuinely excited about this place.  So given the recent talks we’ve had on liquor license moratoriums (though I’m not necessarily saying they are a good idea) and given the excitement many had when we learned about a new hardware store coming soon – for the Friday Question of the Day – I’m curious what other non bar/restaurant retail you’d like to see in your neighborhoods?

“Dear PoPville,

Now that fall is just around the corner, I would really like to visit an apple orchard of the pick-your-own variety. Do any of your readers have suggestions for ones that

1) are within 1 -1.5 hours drive from DC
2) pet-friendly
and bonus points for
3) include or are nearby wineries?”

The above “Dear PoPville” got me thinking about how much I love Autumn. So in addition to the specific questions above – I’d like to add a couple more – what’s your favorite Autumn seasonal beer. And more generally what’s your favorite Autumn activity in or near DC?
