Back in April we learned Peanut Butter Jelly Time food truck was coming to DC. As many predicted they are no longer in operation. Foodtruckfiesta shares the word via PBJ Truck’s facebook page:

As some of you have suspected, we have closed the door on Peanut Butter Jelly Time. We appreciate all of the high-fives & pictures of your notes from Mom, the rest of the city wasn’t ready for us.

“There’s nothing like unrequited love to drain all the flavor out of a peanut butter sandwich”

See you soon..

Here’s what the menu looked like.

A reader took the photo above yesterday afternoon and writes:

“There was a Chik fil a food truck at metro center (I think 12th street, wherever they all usually line up) and there was a huge crowd protesting, chanting, and so on. Still seemed like plenty of people on line for the truck …”

NBC Washington reported:

The group included members from the Human Rights Campaign protesting recent statements by Dan Cathy, the president of Chick-fil-A, who recently told Baptist Press, “We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives.”

His statements, which many believe oppose same-sex marriage, have fired up gay rights advocates across the country. Mayors in both Boston and Chicago have urged the company to reconsider locating restaurants in their cities, and the Jim Henson company recently pulled toys from kid’s meals.

El Floridano Food Truck at 3301 Georgia Ave, NW

Mothership will be moving into the former Brown’s Caribbean Bakery at 3301 Georgia Ave, NW.

From kickstarter:

Mothership will be a restaurant and bakery in what was formerly a carry-out space on Georgia Avenue. With community tables, weekend brunch and family-friendly BBQs, we hope Mothership will be a community cornerstone and meeting place. Chef/Owner Stephan Boillon will offer delicious baked goods & pastries, gourmet pizzas, small plates and seasonal tasting menus, designed to showcase great ingredients.

By preparing farm-to-table, seasonal ingredients, sustainable seafood, and pastured meats, we will provide good wholesome food to upper Georgia Avenue in an inviting neighborhood space. Our goal is to give our patrons tasty and unique food options, whether they are eating a vegan, vegetarian, pescaterian or omnivorous diet.

With funds raised on Kickstarter, Mothership will

Create handcrafted, custom bar & dining tables using reclaimed materials
Design and build ADA accessible bathrooms using reclaimed fixtures
Install a 10 ton Energy Efficient HVAC system

Potential District Taco space on Capitol Hill

A reader sent in some sweet scuttlebutt saying that the food truck District Taco was looking to open in a brick and mortar space on Capitol Hill (potentially into the soon to be former, after they move to Barracks Row, YES! Organic Market at 658 Pennsylvania Ave, SE.) The owner of District Taco confirmed that they are looking for a space on Capitol Hill but haven’t signed a lease a yet. They hope to find a space and open up on the Hill by the end of 2012. They’ve also recently opened a super successful brick and mortar spot in Penn Quarter.

So, given District Taco’s success, for today’s Friday Question of the Day – Which food truck would you most like to see open in a brick and mortar restaurant?

Shawafel is one by far one of the best cheap eats in the city. Personally I think the Shish Taouk is one of my favorite meals in the city. Their website says:

Shawarma and Falafel quick served restaurant, the name comes from the two words combined “Shawafel”.

We will be serving chicken, lamb and beef mixed Shawarma; the traditional Lebanese way which is made from scratch with my family’s secret sauce. All our meat will be bought from local farmers, cutting it, marinating it and then skewered on the vertical spit. Same goes for the chicken shawarma. We will be serving spreads such as: hummus and baba ghanoug. For salad options, we will have Tabouleh and Fattouch as served in Lebanon.

Shawafel opened up at 1322 H St, NE back in Aug. 2011. For those that don’t live near H Street – you are in luck – I spoke to the owner on Saturday afternoon who said he will be launching a food truck to be called @Shawafel in June. You can see their menu here.

Awesome news.
