Ed. Note: NBC Washington reported: “2nd DC Firefighter Positive for Coronavirus, As Many as 100 Quarantined: Sources”.

Regarding the police – “Metropolitan Police Department Operational Adjustments During COVID-19”.

“Dear PoPville,

My cousin is a dc firefighter (I know we’re not supposed to start stories with that rn but it’s true!). Last few days have been hearing horror stories about all the non-emergency calls they’re still getting. Thankfully at the end of last week DCFEMS received protective gear + new protocols.

But… been spinning my wheels for how to help get out the message that we need to protect our first responders by not sending them into homes with potential CoVid19. We need to do this by not allowing non-emergency calls (ones with mild symptoms and not life threatening) to be answered by DCFEMS, possibly exposing entire firehouses and extra families to this virus. Can the city/mayor find a way to direct people’s 911 calls with flu-like symptoms elsewhere? Believe Uber is offering vouchers + there’s a nurse line to call for advice. How can we administer some sort of penalty for arriving at the home of someone who is not in fact experiencing life-threatening symptoms? (more…)

Thanks to Darrell for passing on this Change.org petition (with already over 11,000 signatures:

“In 1900, architect Leon Dessez designed the Renaissance style firehouse then known then as Truck Company F which currently sits at 1338 Park Rd in Columbia Heights. It was later renamed to Truck Company 6 in 1906 and merged with Engine Company 11 in 1940. In 1984, Engine 11 and Truck Company 6 relocated to 3420 14th Street where it now serves the Columbia Heights neighborhood.

Food on the Stove seeks to acquire the old vacant DC Firehouse at 1338 Park Road and convert it into a demonstration kitchen for firefighters to take free cooking classes while they are at work. The space will also operate as a full-service restaurant to help Food on the Stove sustain its charitable operations including supplementing the cost of meals in the firehouse, by providing free boxes of food that contain all the ingredients firefighters will need to make healthy meals at the firehouse. “Early Sunday morning (Jan 5, 2020), a fire gutted a duplex row house in the 400 block of Madison St. NE, displacing a family of 8 who have lost everything.

The family is stable and recovering. Matriarch of the family, Mrs. Caviness-Bey sustained 2nd degree burns to her face and arm and broke her wrist and pelvis when she jumped from the second floor bedroom nearly escaping the fire after dropping her 2 year old grandson out the window to safety. The other two granddaughters ages 14 and 7 are also doing well and were able to get out the front door escaping the fire. The family dog was found safe, and is now being cared for by a neighbor.

ANC 4B09 Commissioner LaRoya Huff has organized a Donation Drive, to take place on Wednesday, January 8th from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Riggs-LaSalle Recreation Center. They are working with the family to determine next-steps as regards setting up a GoFundMe account as well.
