I love the kite festival and I love the photos from PoPville that result… Above and below’s great shots were taken by K’s Clicks.

You can find all the info you’ll need here:

“Opening day marks the beginning of the two-week long celebration of the cherry blossoms and the commencement of spring in Washington, DC.

For the fifth year in a row, free Family Day festivities will be presented jointly by the Festival and the National Building Museum in anticipation of thousands of families from around the region and nation that will attend.”

and

“The Opening Ceremony is a National Cherry Blossom Festival tradition that embraces the true meaning of the Festival – the celebration of spring, cross-cultural exchange and community. His Excellency Ichiro Fujisaki, Ambassador of Japan, leads the tableau of Washington dignitaries to welcome the crowd that fills the majestic balconies throughout the Great Hall of the National Building Museum. The program begins at 4:00 PM.

With a resounding opening, The Shigeyama family, famous Kyogen players with a history dating 400 years, performs “Sambaso,” the most sacred and celebratory of all plays in the Noh and Kyogen repertoire. The troupe is comprised of five actors and three musicians. “Sambaso” dances celebrate fertility and good harvests.”

Hopefully the weather will cooperate so it won’t look like this:

This event was sponsored by the Friends of 16th Street Parks. Sorry I didn’t post in advance but I just stumbled past it. In the future I’ve asked them to email me similar events so I can add to ‘Weekend Picks’. Anyway, it was really great to see folks having such a great time on Sat. In my experience whenever there is a mariachi band, good times follow:

They even had free yo-yos!

HAUNTED HOUSE!  Continues after the jump (more…)

I’ve never actually been to this annual race on 17th Street, NW but friends have told me it is phenomenal. I’m not sure if it is a rain or shine event – anyone know? Also anyone know what time and where exactly it starts. A bunch of friends are going to some bars along 17th Street to get a good viewing spot. Sadly, I can’t make it tonight – so if anyone goes please take some photos for me! You can email me the photos to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com or upload them to the PoPville flickr pool here.

“Dear PoP,

I jogged by Florida Avenue Grill today and noticed a sign on the window advertising a party tomorrow. It seems it’s the restaurant’s
65th anniversary so they are having a block party celebration tomorrow from 10-4. Do you know anything about this?”

Yup, just spoke to the folks from Florida Avenue Grill and indeed they’re having a block party on 11th Street, NW south of Florida Ave starting at 10am. There will be free food and good times. The party goes until 4pm. Thanks for the heads up!

Ojo Latino is a series by Néstor Sánchez Cordero. This week features the Fiesta DC Festival that took place on Saturday. Stay tuned for reader photos at 2pm. Néstor says, “Images are around, the secret is to catch them at the right moment and with the right light…”

I can’t believe this is the first Fiesta DC I’ve attended. It was a blast. There was tons of good food, music, parades and most importantly good vibes. My only problem was that it was perhaps a bit too crowded. As I’m only 5’6″ on a good day I had a tough time seeing the parade. Besides the parade and great food, I’d say my highlight was winning a Goya baseball cap. What’d you guys think? Good times? What was your favorite part?

Stay tuned for an Ojo Latino also featuring the Fiesta.

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)
