Obviously much of the attention about Adams Morgan Day has focused on the Dog shooting by MPD. When I stopped by around 3:30pm there was an area blocked off where the shooting occurred but overall if you didn’t know there was an incident it felt like things were back to normal.

I don’t know if it was because of the early gray weather, the incident, multiple festivals scheduled on the same day or what but it certainly felt like there were less people this year. Here’s what Belmont Street looked like this year:

It is quite a contrast from how it looked last year. Nevertheless there were still fun activities like dancing, music, art, food etc. (and of course as could’ve been expected right before the primaries, a ton of campaigning). For those who attended what were your overall experiences?

A few more photos after the jump. (more…)

I feel like a broken record but again Columbia Heights Day (this year with the addition of the DC State Fair) was a huge success. And as I say every year the photos do far more justice than words. Sadly, I missed the cupcake eating contest this year so if anyone got some of those shots please upload a few of them to the PoPville flickr pool. Congrats and thanks to the organizers for putting together such a fun day.

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

What better way to cook with an unlimited supply of free basil than participating at the Marion Street Garden Basil Bonanza?

City Blossoms, in conjunction with the Runcible Spoon, is hosting a basil-themed potluck and cook-off. Drop by the garden (on Marion St. between P & Q Streets, NW) and pick up any amount of basil you need on Monday, August 23. Then, go home, cook your thing (it can be a dessert, main dish, appetizer, whatever), and bring it back on Wednesday, August 25.

1. Come Monday (August 23) from 4pm to 7pm or Wednesday (August 25) from 4pm to 6:30 to pick basil (thai, genovese, lemon, and box).
2. Prep basil in a tasty way (beverage, appetizer, main dish, dessert, whatever!) for 5 or more people and bring the dish to share on Wednesday, August 25th from 6:30-8:30pm.
3. Eat lots of whatever other people bring.
4. Enjoy the loveliness of Marion Street Garden and meet other happy basil fanatics.

There will be awards for the best dishes, so cook with your best effort. Good luck!”

“PLEASE JOIN US FOR A GREEN CONSTRUCTION TOUR

Sunday August 29th, 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM
1877 Ingleside Terrace NW

Balancing the best energy-efficient green building practices is challenging in existing homes, especially historic homes. Come join Historic Mt. Pleasant for a tour of a green home rehab in process. You can see how the homeowners, who are doing much of the work themselves, are reinventing the floorplan while keeping the historical integrity of the home. They will discuss their strategies for reducing energy and water use, improving indoor air quality and making decisions on green materials.

You will see the unique framing, insulation, plumbing, and HVAC of this row house, which will certify Platinum under USGBC’s LEED for Homes program. Get a sneak peak and keep up with progress at www.greenmyrowhome.com.”

This looks like it’s gonna be a great event and I get to be a guest judge! From a Ten Miles Square press release:

Mark Saturday, August 28 on your calendar to check out the first DC State Fair, part of Columbia Heights Day on the field at Harriet Tubman Elementary School.

DC has no county fair or state fair where DC residents can show off their talents in things like baking, canning, urban agriculture, photography, etc.  But this year, we’re planning to change that.  A group of bloggers is partnering with Columbia Heights Day to create a DC State Fair tent, where there will be competitions such as Tastiest Tomato, Best Home-Made Pie, and so forth.  DC residents will submit their entries for a chance to win glory and prizes.  The DC State Fair will be held on August 28th, concurrent with Columbia Heights Day, at Tubman Elementary Field (11th and Irving Streets NW).

And what’s a state fair without an awesome photo contest?  Show us your photos of supreme DC spirit: display our cultural independence in images!  Enter your two best images to our Flickr pool by midnight on Sunday, August 22.

Heather Goss from Ten Miles Square and DCist, along with special guest judges and DC Spirit Experts, Philippa Hughes from the Pink Line Project and Dan Silverman from the Prince of Petworth, will pick a handful of favorites for semi-finalists, which will be displayed online the week before the fair.  Our Grand Prize Winner, First and Second Runners-Up will be printed, framed, and displayed at the DC State Fair on August 28.  Winners will get to take their framed prints home, to show off their DC pride to friends and family.

Entrants must live in the District of Columbia.  (Virginia, Maryland, we love you, but you have your own fairs to enter!)  Entry is free, limit two photos per person.  Questions, please email Heather at [email protected].

There is no fee to enter the DC State fair.  However, donations to the organizers are greatly appreciated!  Recommended donation is $5 per entry (but judging will be blind, and donation status will not affect results).  Please visit the DC State Fair website and click the Paypal link.

From a press release:

“In celebration of their 6th Annual Bastille Day Block Party and French Maid Race, L’Enfant Café Bar, 2200 18th Street, NW, announces it has added a masquerade ball to its popular Bastille Day festivities. The annual party has grown so popular, the casual café-bar has made arrangement to once again close an entire city block. Co-hosted by King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette – who bear a striking resemblance to L’Enfant’s owners Jim Ball and Christopher Lynch – the Bastille Day Block Party will take over Vernon Street, NW, between 18th and 19th Streets. Doors open at 4p.m. and the street party concludes at 11p.m. Newcomers need look no further than the corner bar at 18th Street (at Vernon) topped with an Eiffel Tower and draped with les drapeaux Tricolor. The guillotine out front is a dead giveaway.

Continues after the jump. (more…)
