I guess I’ve always known DC has been a festival city but I never really appreciated just how many festivals we host until this year. Just off the top of my head – H St, NE, Adams Morgan, Barracks Row, Cleveland Park, Mt. Pleasant Fiesta, Georgia Ave/Caribbean Day, Crafty Bastards, Greek Festival, Turkish Festival, Cherry Blossom, Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Capitol Jazz Fest, National Book Festival, Capitol Pride, Fiesta Asia!, Dance DC Festival, Festa Italiana, and Duke Ellington Jazz Festival. Many are listed here. Did I leave any big ones out?

Perhaps picking only one is impossible, if that’s the case, what are your top three?

I’m gonna vote Georgia Ave/Caribbean Day, Mt. Pleasant Fiesta ( this Sunday) and Folklife Festival. You?

I know lots of folks here, including me, enjoy cold beer so I thought I’d share the following festival from a reader:

“Dear PoP,

I wanted to send you information on the 5th Annual Maryland Microbrewery Festival: http://www.marylandmicrobreweryfestival.com/default.asp?iId=HILHG.  It’s a great opportunity to eat some good stuff, drink some good beer, and get to see a really beautiful part of the state.  It’s $18 for the tasting, which is hard to beat.

It’s happening out in lovely Carroll County this Saturday, September 25.  The leaves aren’t quite there yet, but this is a beautiful place nonetheless.  For those PoP readers who don’t know MD too well, Westminster is just 50 miles straight up north on Georgia Avenue.  There’s a bunch of ways to drive out there, but Rte 29 (aka Georgia) is the simplest and second prettiest (to Rte 27 after you get off I-270 and north of Damascus).

Anyway you get there, there’s lots of good food and beer:

“Dear PoP,

The Eighth Annual Barracks Row Fall Festival on Capitol Hill is this Saturday! The day promises to be a fun and exciting time for Hill residents and visitors of all ages, and includes the Military Chefs Cookoff, performances by the Redskins Cheerleaders, and a huge Kids Zone complete with a petting zoo, magicians, clowns, and free cotton candy.”

You can see a schedule of events here.

One day the organizers of the H Street Festival will recognize that while the Jewish people only make up 3% of the population we make up about 36% of festival goers… (Last year the festival was over the Jewish New Year.) Anyway for those not fasting and repenting this is likely to be a really good time. And to all who I’ve offended this past year please forgive me and eat a corndog for me!

This ought to be interesting. From the Rally to Restore Sanity Web site:

“Think of our event as Woodstock, but with the nudity and drugs replaced by respectful disagreement; the Million Man March, only a lot smaller, and a bit less of a sausage fest; or the Gathering of the Juggalos, but instead of throwing our feces at Tila Tequila, we’ll be actively *not* throwing our feces at Tila Tequila. Join us in the shadow of the Washington Monument. And bring your indoor voice. Or don’t. If you’d rather stay home, go to work, or drive your kids to soccer practice… Actually, please come anyway. Ask the sitter if she can stay a few extra hours, just this once. We’ll make it worth your while.”

From the Keep Fear Alive March:

“America, the Greatest Country God ever gave Man, was built on three bedrock principles: Freedom. Liberty. And Fear — that someone might take our Freedom and Liberty. But now, there are dark, optimistic forces trying to take away our Fear — forces with salt and pepper hair and way more Emmys than they need. They want to replace our Fear with reason. But never forget — “Reason” is just one letter away from “Treason.” Coincidence? Reasonable people would say it is, but America can’t afford to take that chance.

So join The Rev. Sir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A. on October 30th for the “March to Keep Fear Alive”™ in Washington DC. Pack an overnight bag with five extra sets of underwear — you’re going to need them. Because, to Restore Truthiness we must always… Shh!!! What’s that sound?! I think there’s someone behind you! Run!”
