Well this seems to be sad news, the Habitat for Humanity building located at 843 Upshur Street, NW has a for sale sign.

D’Brows located at 1203 U Street, NW has become a tarot card reader. It always boggles my mind how tarot card readers can afford rent in prime real estate. What is this France?…

While we’ve heard of the closings on 14th Street (Swann Cleaners and the one a bit further south) I’m happy to report a couple of new openings. Bill’s cleaners had finally opened up at the corner of 13th and Florida Ave (1301 Florida Ave, NW).

And Cupid Cleaners has opened up in Adams Morgan at 1704 Euclid Street, NW. This is an organic cleaners that will have a 20% grand opening discount for a couple of months. Because Bill’s was closed when I walked by I only got pricing info for Cupid. Before the discount shirts are $1.35, pants are $4.95, and suits are $9.95.

Back in November of 2008 we were expecting the arrival of Guatemala Bakery at 3531 14th Street, NW. Sadly this weekend the inevitable was confirmed. Fortunately SweetTime bakery is still open a few storefronts away at 3535 14th Street, NW.

I know there are lots of fans of D’Vines on 14th Street in Columbia Heights. My Capitol Hill friends swear by Schneider’s of Capitol Hill. And I remember back in the day when I lived in Cleveland Park that Calvert Woodley Liquor on Connecticut Ave. in Van Ness was highly recommended. So if you know nothing about wine where can you find the best selection/prices in town?

About a month ago we speculated on what was coming to the newly renovated building on 14th Street between N and Rhode Island. At the time folks thought a Subway sandwich shop and Korean restaurant were in the works. But I just saw this sign last weekend announcing Rollin Cycles – Coming Soon. Rollin Cycles is currently located just up the block at 1320 14th Street, NW.

When I previewed Corehaus a few weeks ago I promised to let folks know when they’d be open to the public. I just got word they’ll have a grand opening this Sat. from 4 – 8pm. Light food and refreshments will be served. This is the spot that owner, James Kerns, described as “taking old stuff and making it cool again”. Definitely worth checking out! 825 Upshur Street, NW is just a few storefronts down from Domku.

Seafood & Crab located at 1936 14th Street, NW (just south of U) is no more. This spot has brought me a lot of material for the blog over the years. We’ve talked about whether or not Seafood & Crab is a bit redundant, how long it has been having a grand opening and of course judged the food here. I assume many folks won’t shed a tear but I’ll certainly miss the awning.
And across the street there is a big sign mentioning Bargain World is going out of business as well. Tough day for this section of 14th…

Last we we talked about this spot we heard it may become a deli. The owner emailed me last night night with some updates. The first floor has become an art studio called Cre8 Studio and is run by “young, hip, bright, personable, fun, persuasive folk”. Sadly they don’t seem to have a Web site up and running.
The second floor will become home to the offices of the Wounded Warrior Action Group (WWAG). You can read more about this group here. They will be having an event in the Cre8 space on the first floor open to the public on Dec. 12 (from 10-6 PM) which is “a hands-on type of museum/display on the realities of the life of soldiers on the front lines, and technologies used to protect our forces and civilians.”
Sounds like two great additions to the block!

This past weekend I heard Cork Market was going to open today at 1805 14th Street, NW. And it’s true, they’re open and the space looks great:

While there is tons of wine they also have sandwiches, salads, cheese and more:

In the next week or so you’ll be able to find out more info including upcoming cooking classes on their Web site here.
More photos after the jump. (more…)
