Mimilah and Miss Pixie’s are located at 1626 14th Street, NW.

DC BID shares the news:

“Downtown’s getting another clothing retailer. Hint: it has a catchy jingle, sought after prices, and lets you inspire your “inner maximista.” That’s right, if you guessed T.J. Maxx. The department store that sells brand name and designer fashions at a discount plans to open in the humungous Homer Building (601 13th Street) next spring. The Maxx will assume space once occupied by RitzCamera and face F Street.”

Any TJ Maxx fans?

Drilling Tennis and Golf is located at 1040 17th St, NW (just north of K St.) For those who play tennis and/or golf – these are some of the nicest folks I’ve met. Very sad to see them go after so many years. I was told that they couldn’t renegotiate a new lease. You can visit their sister store in Rockville at 1701 Rockville Pike (301-230-9195) The 17th St, NW location will remain open for a few more weeks while the remaining inventory is sold.

From a press release:

“Buffalo Exchange, the wildly popular Tucson-based fashion resale store, will open its first store in Washington, D.C. in the first quarter of 2012. Bethesda-based Streetsense’s retail brokerage team represented Buffalo Exchange in leasing a two-level, 4,245 square foot store at 1314 14th Street, N.W. in the heart of the city’s “hip” 14th Street corridor. Streetsense also has been engaged to do the design and interior architecture for the store, which will be its 42nd U.S. location.

Founded in 1974 in Tucson, AZ by Kirsten and Spencer Block, Buffalo Exchange now has 41 operating stores in 15 states. Local customers can buy, sell, and trade clothing and accessories at their neighborhood stores. Each store’s ever-changing inventory includes designer labels, vintage, jeans, leather, current basics, and one-of-a-kind items, as well as brand-new merchandise and accessories.

The Village Voice recently named Buffalo Exchange the best used clothing store in New York City, saying: “We just can’t tear ourselves away from Buffalo Exchange. The resale chain has numerous shops spread across 15 states (if you’re ever in Seattle, that one rocks), and their outposts in the East Village, Williamsburg, and Chelsea are transformative experiences.”

Buffalo Exchange will be located between the Logan 14 Spa and the coming soon The Pig restaurant at 1314 14th St, NW.

“Dear PoPville,

I keep on seeing black garlic all over menus in the area, most recently being brunch at Poste this weekend. I love it but I don’t love paying for expensive meals or shipping to order the black garlic from online stores. Any suggestions from PoPville for a good place to get black garlic?

Also, I’m from Catonsville where there is an amazing H Mart and I am dying for something similar around here. Is there anything metro-accessible that is comparable? Thanks!”

Back in Aug. ’10 I had heard some scuttlebutt that an H Mart (grocery store) could be coming to the old Secret Safeway on 19th St, NW in Dupont. Sadly, that doesn’t seem to be the case. But the readers question above got me thinking about other coveted retail that we don’t have yet in DC. It seems like there are so many big new developments coming down the pike that we might be able to attract some.

Some of the places I’ve heard spoken about that we don’t have include: H Mart, Eataly, Uniqlo – who else?

So for the Friday Question of the Day – What retail do you want to see in DC that we don’t have yet?

And of course – where can you find reasonably priced black garlic? Would the Hana Japanese Market have it at the corner of 17th and U St, NW?

Back in May ’11 we learned that a Game Stop would be coming to 1759 Columbia Rd, NW. We judged the building here. Well, they’re now open.

And across the street the Unity Market has been closed for about a month. The park seems strangely quiet when I pass it now. Some readers have been inquiring if they’ll be reopening on 14th St, NW in Columbia Heights. I’m still keeping my eyes peeled for that but haven’t heard anything recently.
