From an email:

Lori Graham Design and Contemporary Wing [1412 14th St, NW] have finally torn down the paper and put out their signs!

Doors will be open to the public this Saturday at noon for the launch of the space’s first art exhibition presented by Contemporary Wing.

Contemporary Wing’s first exhibition in its new permanent home on 14th Street is Hedieh Javanshir Ilchi’s I’M COMING HOME. Doors will first be open to the public this Saturday, May 12 at noon (reception from 6pm to 8pm). Ilchi’s paintings explore the duality of her cultural identity as an Iranian–American. The new series reflects her ongoing interest in the fusion of visual codes of Western abstraction and traditional Persian Art, with an emphasis on the “Tazhib,” the Persian tradition of illumination the spoken word. The resulting synthesis evokes allegories of intrusion and invasion, referencing the historical and contemporary sociopolitical conflicts.

Lori Graham Design will host the grand opening of its furniture décor showroom – 1412- at the end of June, once Ilchi’s exhibition concludes.

Dear PoPville,

Did you know that apparently Clover Market at 5014 Connecticut Ave. NW has closed . . . One of the last of the old fashioned, neighborhood grocery stores . . . I don’t know how long it was around – but I have lived in DC since 1982 and I certainly know that it was here since long before that . . .

Sad — as another, small independent goes out of business.

Clover Market was located across the street from Politics and Prose bookstore. Looks like a demo permit has been issued but it’s not clear who the new tenant will be:

5015 Connecticut Ave, NW

Back in June 2011 Politics and Prose was purchased by new owners:

“Carla Cohen died in October 2010, and in June 2011, Politics & Prose was purchased by Bradley Graham and Lissa Muscatine. Brad was a longtime journalist with The Washington Post. His wife, Lissa, also worked as a Post journalist for a number of years, and then served as a speechwriter to Hillary Clinton at both the White House and the State Department.”

I hadn’t heard about any changes until now. They’ve recently applied for a liquor license:

“The nature of the business is a bookstore. Entertainment consists of poetry readings and author presentations. Food will be light, consisting of pre-packaged, ready to eat items.

Sunday 10 am – 8 pm, Monday through Saturday 9 am – 10 pm”

According to their Web site the future will:

“look for new ways to make books a popular entertainment to compete with other leisure activities. We will continue to explore links between books and travel and the arts, as well as books that help us understand ourselves and our world. We will be planning trips, meals together, movies, music, and other activities that enrich our lives.”

You can see a calendar of events here.

As books and beer are among my favorite things in life, I’m pretty psyched about this!

1815 Wisconsin Ave, NW

Looks like another Noodles and Company is planning on opening at 1815 Wisconsin Ave, NW where the former Einstein Bagels was located before the massive renovation/new construction started. In Dec. 2011 Noodles and Company opened their first DC location in Woodley Park in the old Sake Club space at 2635 Connecticut Ave, NW. The Woodley Park location took 8 months to open from when the zoning process first started there. So, at the earliest, we’re probably looking at a winter opening for the Wisconsin Ave location.

In other bakery news Le Caprice DC which which opened in Jan. 2012 at 3460 14th St, NW in Columbia Heights now has some of the best outdoor seating in town.

These are the legit comfortable wicker chairs. And thankfully there are lots of them. The revolution continues on the 3400 block of 14th Street. And stay tuned for expanded hours coming in the next week or so.
